Just came back from Sunny Beach yesterday. A day late due to a delay at the airport and because of the terrible customer service from our rep and airline (XL) it almost ruined our holiday.
We stayed in Hotel Kalina Gardens which was located 5 mins from the beach, shops and nightlife but away from the noise. It was clean, comfortable and had a huge pool and plenty of facilities. However the staff were unfriendly and rude and we went a whole day without electricity in our room. It wasn't until we complained again that they sent someone to look at the problem. A word of advice be wary of the plugs as our electricity kept going and we couldn't charge phones or cameras.
The biggest gripe I have about Bulgaria in general is the food. It wasn't at all to my liking. Not a vegetable apart from tomatoes in sight. The three of us thought we were being careful about what we ate but ended up being sick for 3 days. So although the food is cheap there is a reason for it! On our last day we discovered a restaurant called Djannays which was nice. Also all of the local beers and wines were delicious and didn't give you a hangover.
The shopping was also very good. Cheap markets and jewellery shops. All in all I would only go back again if I heard that the food had hugely improved.

Booked allocation on arrival with Balkan and were very relieved upon arriving at Kalina Gardens. Room was very spacious with good air conditioning. Large bathroom with bath and shower, hairdryer.
Booked bed and breakfast but were upgraded to half board, breakfasts were excellent as we have always found in Bulgarian hotels. Evening meals in hotels in Bulgaria seem to have a bad reputation and we usually eat out as so many good restaurants and such good value. Did try the evening meals a couple of times and were pleasently surprised. Buffet style with lots of choice - soups, salads, meat and fish dishes and lovely vegetarian options - stuffed peppers, aubergines, courgettes etc.
Nice pool area. Only downside to hotel was lack of sunbeds due to people placing towels and then not using. Indoor pool very quiet.
Staff were very helpful and friendly. A bit surprised that the hotel bar closed early from our other experiences of hotels in Sunny Beach - around midnight. Other hotels we have stayed in have stayed open until the last person leaves, but at least this shows they have some consideration for their staff and there are lots of bars nearby if you want a late drink. The hotel had a mix of nationalities which for us is part of the experience of holidaying abroad.

A worthy 4* This hotel has a very central location, just minutes from the main pedestrianised shopping area and the market, but unlike most of the others in the area, it is relatively quiet. It has a lot of facilities, outdoor pool crowded but nice, freezing indoor pool with mini gym (2 bikes) kids club, hairdresser, spacious rooms (apparently unusual) Bar (although not Irish as stated in the brochure) staff are friendly and helpful. Food is really disgusting as in all the hotels, luckily food is very cheap and there are many local restaurants

Room Tip: Если любите поспать, просите тихие номера, которые выходят не на бассейн. Под цокот копыт вы заснете скорее, чем под гул голосов из бара.
