“Dreadful rundown hotel in poor state of disrepair!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

Have just returned from a stay at the Chaika Beach Hotel. Disappointing is an understatement when describing how terrible this hotel really is. The hotel is rundown and poorly managed reflected in dreadful food, rude staff, dirty rooms, stained/ripped bed linen and broken fixtures and fittings everywhere. The hotel is rated as a 4-star but in its current state should be reclassified as a 2-star. Only one restaurant was open to cater for a massive amount of guests. Food was cold, unappetising and plates and cutlery in short supply and chipped/dirty. The hotel is literally falling apart as witnessed first hand this morning when the mould and drips from the ceiling in the dining room turned into a full blown flooding no doubt due to a ruptured water pipe finally giving way! Save yourself disappointment and stay somewhere else.....

Rooms were ok. Could not manage to get a sunbed because people put their towels out at 2 in the morning, pool full of sand and cigarette ends!! Food hall was a nasty place as you were pushed out of the way and nowhere to sit, the evening food smelled horrible. We ate out! Stairways were not cleaned the whole two weeks we were there, things were on the stairs from when we arrived and still there when we left. Definately NOT a four star!!

Right, this hotel has fairly ok rooms and lobbies but thats it. Im sat here on my balcony as i write this.

From the way i was dealt with by the receptionist i felt like she didn't like us two. We had to get our BH rep to get our passports because the receptionist said they weren't ready (lied). Asked for another wifi hotspot top up and she lied to me saying they don't do them anymore. I went back later and the night receptionist gave me one. You can get wifi in your room with these. ill try get a name or a photo of the woman i'm talking about.

The Russians love Chaika and you can tell by the way they are treated and how we are treated (we are 2nd class guests to them here). There's virtually no english speaking people here so if your going to try speak to other holiday makers then go outside the hotel, because the Russians cant talk to you and the Germans wont talk to you (it seems).

We haven't used the pool because the sun loungers are always 'reserved,' so we go to the Globus hotel 4* down the promenade. GO TO THE GLOBUS HOTEL IF YOU'RE coming here PLEASE they've just renovated the place and it looks amazing.

We haven't used any of our AI because the food is horrendous and we just cant be bothered drinking inside.

Another thing, i think the management here are getting some guests to come on here and write gleaming reviews. If you're British and you've come here and say you've enjoyed it, tell me what medication you're on because I WANT SOME!

Will try update with photos soom.

I do not understand the reviews from those who rate this hotel as good.
I stayed here with my wife for 7 days, my first impression of staff was terrible, I entered the hotel to check in when someone was informing reception that the concrete step at there room was broken and needed attention, staff responded by making threats of moving them to a lower standard of room as they hadn't paid for a balcony. Now the person wasn't complaining or making a big issue of the matter but the staff immediately turned nasty and told him to go away. The hotel claims in Balkan Holidays brochures to be four star, now no matter British or Bulgarian levels of standard you choose to go by you expect the hotel to confirm this but no they have proudly displayed behind reception a certification of being a three star standard hotel.

The brochure says three restaurants nope 1 has been this way since last year according to staff. The restaurant was overcrowded, lack of dishes cutlery was normal, the juice machine ran out of syrup every day ( no fresh fruit juice option) and was never refilled during the dining periods. Tables were wiped down with a cloth no cleaning agent used to disinfect, crumbs pushed onto floor. the standard of food was poor now I don't believe in the comments that it may not suit British pallets I will try all foods from all nations I visit, the issue with the food is that it was the same basics each day chips, rice, pasta, but these were not prepared well at all. There was variety in the main meals each day but again poor standards of cooking made the food unbearable. There was a salad bar which was most popular with guests and frequently had long queues as it took a long time for staff to replenish.

Balkan Holidays brochure says five bars, nope 4 the pool bar at the beach side of the hotel has been stripped back to brick work, The Irish bar is in fact the Seamans bar with a small sign saying Irish bar on one door and what makes it an Irish bar nothing at all.
Now the choices you have for a refreshing drink are still water juice cherry, orange or apple when there is syrup in machine. Behind bar is draft 7up, Pepsi, and tonic water that is what staff call it, served in a plastic 125 ml cup. You can also choose to have a beer which is ok but you will not get drunk on it as it is less than 1% for that you can choose vodka, gin, rum or whisky from the brand Savoy. There is wine available white and red,all I can say is that my wife poured both drinks out after a sip of both. If you wish to have the luxury of having a drink from a glass you will need to tip the bar staff. There is no choice of any other drinks no other beers or cocktails.

The room was poor to say the least, once the so called bellboy showed you to the room and placed his hand out for a tip after shrugging his shoulders at why a cardboard toothpaste box was wedged into the keycard holder so the lights would work. The bathroom fittings were rusted, the noise from the pipe work was constant, any time a room around you used any water the sound was like trapped air in pipes rattling. the electrical socket was hanging from wall, less than half of the bulbs worked. The balcony railing was not secured at one side, we were on the eighth floor. The bed sheets were torn.
The room was not cleaned each day, the beds were made but towels were not changed even when you follow the signs instructions on how to do so, by leaving them piled on floor.
The cleaners take any money lying around room, this is not an accusation its a fact, tested this after 3 Lev was taken from room. I placed coins around room and went out, when I returned it was all gone. When challenged reception I was informed it is traditional for guests to leave cleaners a tip for cleaning room. I said I had not left it for them and wanted to know how the cleaners would know it was a tip for them at this reception staff became evasive.
Security was a serious issue, when we first arrived we asked for key for safe in room 49 Lev for week, we never got change tried to say it was tip for serving them.
Cleaners leave door to balcony open each day, all balcony's are accessible from any room on your floor as only a 2 foot wall separates you from neighbour.
Lots of thefts reported whilst we stayed there, the most worrying one was when the whole safe was stolen from a room. This was done to a locked room with no sign of break in.

The lifts breakdown continuously, no alarm button in one of them or lights.
The pools were dangerous, the plastic guards which cover the overflow drains at sides of pool were loose all the way around, several people's feet went through grating and hurt them self. There was no lifeguard seen until day six and that was for a fleeting few seconds as he walked by pool area to go through to another part of the hotel.
With 395 rooms and 16 suites that's an average 822 or so guests in the hotel at peak times and less than 100 sun loungers most of which are damaged in some way. If your not fast or a night owl you wont get a lounger and can either take a towel to beach or pay excessive rates for lounger on beach.

There is so much more that could be said about this hotel but there is enough written from others and myself to show how bad this hotel is and if you ask why I stayed for 7 days if it was so bad I had paid to go on holiday and made best of a bad situation.
One last thing Balkan Holiday reps do not care or listen to complaints several people tried but when you could find her she would not listen or take note.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

I have just returned from a weeks stay at Chaika beach.
The food and food hall is terrible, I can only describe it as a cattle market, to make sure you have a plate and cutlery you need to be the first ones there. it seems the food is catered for every nationality apart from British, we ended up eating out most evenings.
There is no evening entertainment
Bear in Mind if you are traveling with young children, the hotel is right by the beach and main promenade, where pub crawls/partys start at 3pm until very early hours of the morning which is very loud.
The air con in my room, didn't work very well and the room was very stuffy, the shower was full of limescale and shower curtain pole well rusted, the water was only hot in the morning and not in the evening.
There are lots of broken tiles around the pool area and if you are lucky enough to get a sunbed, beaware that some are very dangerous.
Staff in the restuarant are very rude, and seem to spend more time outside smoking than actually clearing tables, please be advised if you eat outside, that seagulls will dive bomb!
I would seriously advise anyone not to stay sat this hotel!

We stayed here for 2 weeks 26th July - 9th August.

On arrival we checked in pretty quick (but they don't check in before 2pm so if you arrive a little bit before prepare for a massive queue) and got shown to our room by the bellboy. We got told where the restaurant was and mentioned the Irish bar and then up to our room. Once there the bellboy told us he doesn't get paid and relies on tips basically asking us for money. We didn't let him take our bags for this reason so we said we didn't have any change. He then asked us if we had any English money to give to him.. So we said no. Very awkward at the beginning of the holiday.

Room - Spacious. Lots of storage. Beds were decent. Only 2 plug sockets which one was used by the TV (which had 2 English speaking channels, MTV and discovery channel). Bath and shower.. Depending what time you used it the water can be cold. AC worked for us but heard a lot of people complain it wasn't working for them. Balconies aren't private.. You can see all along the rest of the floor with a metal railing separating us. Fridge was a poor excuse.. Never cold. Basically the room was good for sleeping in which is all we cared about really. We had our rooms cleaned everyday.. We didn't get our towels changed everyday but then we left them on the rack anyway so they wouldn't. People who complain about their towels not being changed everyday make me laugh.. I doubt they change/wash their towels everyday at home so why expect it in a hotel?

Restaurant - Not big enough for the amount of guests there is. There's another restaurant but they don't use it. You can be queuing for 10minutes waiting to get into this place.. They have 4 food stations. One filled with Pasta, chips, pizza and 2 pasta sauces. This doesn't change, call it 'the basics'. The second had 16 trays.. With 8 options (same food whatever side you walk down) which we were a little bit disappointed about considering we've been to a smaller hotel in Sunny Beach and had a lot more options. Some days there was about 4 things we could eat from this.. Sometimes there was nothing.. We're not fussy eaters in the slightest but after the first week we weren't looking forward to meal times.. The chicken legs and wings they do were lovely though they were a bit pink/red inside we didn't come down with anything. We mainly ended up eating potato options instead. Third station was your usual salad bar and forth was dessert. No they don't cater for the British but it's not all Bulgarian food either.. They definitely try and cater for everything as there is a lot of different nationalities there but they need more options! Just don't expect too much food wise here. Service is a bit slow but move finished plates to the side and they will eventually get taken.

If you want a decent meal then head out the hotel onto the strip, turn right and the first fast good place on your left do a massive jacket potato with as many fillings as you want for 7 lev. It's beautiful. They do lovely pancakes too for 3lev.

Snacks - we never got told about this but we knew they offered it from reading about it when we booked the hotel. We eventually found out they do snacks in the Irish bar from 2-5 but if you go after 3:30 there's hardly anything left.

Pool - If you want a sunbed then you NEED to go down early. There's not enough sun beds and if you go down after 9pm good luck finding one. We set our alarm for 7.. Put towels down and then went back to bed (as everyone else seems to do). They play music all day (not always between 1-4) and you can't fault the animation team. There's activities throughout the day (not 1-4) but they are the same every day which if you enjoy playing then do. Pool bar was nice enough.. We always got fanta but the barman asked us why not have a cocktail or a non alcoholic one so we went for non alcoholic one and it tasted a lot more refreshing. One of the guys name is Daniel and he's a lot more friendlier then the others. Can't really comment about the pool next to the strip as we never used it but same thing about sun beds, always taken. Pool bar wasn't open there but it's right next to Irish bar. After 6 then it gets used by a guy so people can do water zorbing. Obviously you have to pay.

Staff are.. okay. Depending on how you treat the receptionists they're nice back to you. The guests of the hotel are bloody rude. They push infront.. They don't understand queuing.. They barge past each other especially in the restaurant. You can tell who the English are in this hotel cause they have manners, they let others walk in front of them. Yeah, not friendly at all. Not the hotels fault though.. Just the rest of the European guests ;)

We did 2 excursions this time. Khans tent which we were there for 4 hours. 1 hour chilling out, 2 hours eating (slow service) and 1 hour show. It's a good show but I think it's overrated. Did Off-road adventure too which included archery, quad bikes, horse riding and shooting. Could have been a lot better. I'd recommend doing Jeep Safari.. We did this last year and it was so much fun and you're laughing the whole time.

I think that's all. I think some people expect too much from this hotel. It is a CHEAP hotel! We paid roughly £750 each for 2 weeks AI inc. flights. Let's knock off £250 for flights so that's £500. That's roughly £35 for breakfast, lunch, tea, drinks all day and accommodation. You'd never get that here so what do you expect from there. It's not a 4* by UK standards but then the stars are what's given to them by the country's standard so for all we know it could be 4* in Bulgaria. If you want a better hotel, pay more.

It's a decent hotel and we didn't not like staying there but we'd probably choose somewhere with a few more food options if we went back again. The best thing about the hotel is the location.
