Lovely hotel in great location, really friendly staff! My only advice is to make sure you ask for a balcony when booking....fair play they did upgrade us but it did cost extra! The food was spot on and put most restaurants in the resort to shame! Book all excursions once you get there as it much cheaper than booking before you go, Will deffo be going again soon :-)

When choosing my holiday this year i didnt expect to be going to Bulgaria, it was a random choice after deliberating between Egypt and Morocco. Me and my friend (both 18) picked Bulgaria from Thomsons list of destinations and were originally going to stay at the Evrika Hotel until i found out that my friend and a few others were going and they were staying at the Riu Helios. This made us decide to change our mind and book here. Were glad we did.

On arrival after the horrific flying times that Thomson insist on, we checking in and received our all inclusive wrist bands, a free 1.5L bottle of water and 2 cards that entitled you to free pool towels from the life guard every day. They took out passports and kept them safe for us.

We went up to our rooms on the 3rd floor which meant we got a balcony and also a sea view after we requested it when booking with Thomson which i was sceptical about after reading that other people ended up on the 2nd floor even though they pre-requested balcony rooms. The rooms were big and spacious, they have a TV, aircon (that doesn't work if the balcony door is open) and a large bathroom with a large walk in shower. The rooms have numerous mirrors so you can fully check your self out before going to dinner/tea etc. The beds are pretty comfortable and large seeing as there was only 2 sharing the room we both had a double bed to ourselves but our friends that had 3 in a room had 2 doubles and a sofa bed. The rooms are cleaned daily by maids who work extremely hard and are very good at what they do.

The hotel has many facilities including a salon, beauty parlour, travel agents, gym, shop (sells everything from cigarettes to alcohol and chocolate to souvenirs), They have a Lobby bar that opens at 5.30pm, a Pool bar that opens at 10.00am - 11.00pm (serves all alcohol, cocktails and lager) and a main Bar open till Midnight with entertainment. The pool is open all day and closes in the evening around 7.30pm. They also have a themed restaurant that does Asian and Bulgarian food but we never ended up trying this. In the Pool in the evening there is a blow up balloon thing that you get in which cost around £5 for 10 minutes.

The animation team were really funny and always tried to get people involved in different activities, there customer service skills were excellent and always knew how to make people smile. There was a Mini kids disco every night apart from Sunday when it was there day off. During meal times they walk around wishing everyone well and hope they enjoy their food.

The food is really good, always a great variety to chose from. If you miss breakfast they do a smaller continental style breakfast of cold food and toast which is good. The only problem is i would rather have had proper sausages rather than hot dogs at breakfast but they tasted good so it wasnt that bad. Dinner time was good, there was a large variety to choose from and most things were good however, some food had an acquired taste so it may not be for everyone. It was much the same at tea time however, there was a different meat on every day but sometimes the queue for that was quite big so i missed it a few times. There are two sitting for tea, if you missed the first sitting and needed to be on the second one they were happy to make arrangements for you. Sometimes you would be on a table with other people which can be a bit awkward but it was alright.

When the hotel bars closed the security would come and ask everyone to either go out if your going out or go back to the rooms so the other guests could sleep. The Nightlife in Bulgaria is absolutely amazing, i dont know about anyone else but i didnt see any trouble when i was there. There was a few sex shops dotted around but there not that noticeable unless your actually looking out for them.

All in all, we had the best week of our lives and booking to go back at the same time but for ten days this time as a week definitely wasnt enough.

Id like to thank all the staff at the Riu Helios for all the hard work and help they gave, they couldn't do enough. Well done and ill see you again next year :)

Room Tip: Ask for a Balcony and 'Pool view' as you will get sea view dependant on what side of the hot...

I travelled on a family with my husband, my mother and father, my brother and sister-in-law and two kids aged 3 and 5 from 2nd July 2012 until 16 July 2012.

First of all, I need to say to anyone who has read any of the bad reviews on this hotel, please please please do not take notice. I am really struggling to understand how anyone can find any real problems that are worth even complaining about.

General Hotel Info:
When checking in, you receive tokens for towels which you get from the lifeguards every day.
Reception provide bottles of water free of charge so no need to buy from the supermarket.
The hotel has a gym, small supermarket, chemist, bag shop, beauticians/hairdressers/spa.

Rooms:
We had a double room which also had a fold away bed and air conditioning which is standard for all the rooms. As a fault of our travel agents, unfortunately we did not have a room with a balcony, but we adjusted to it and it didn't spoil our holiday in anyway. The bathroom was really spacious with a massive walk in shower which I loved. There was a wardrobe with plenty of storage space. There is also a fridge in each room. The maids came in everyday and made up the beds and changed the towels.

Pool Area:
There are two very large pools with lots of sunbeds available. There is what I would call the main pool area and then the quiet pool area which we sat at for the full two weeks as it was right beside the kids pool and also the kids club. There is also a play sand area here with swings, a slide and a climbing house. The pool area is very clean and there are also umbrellas, one to every two sunbeds. If you want the same beds for your holiday, it is advisable to get up a bit early and put your towels out.
The bar area is at the main pool area and you can help yourself to soft drinks, water, tea, coffee etc. Alcoholic drinks are available at the bar.

Dining
The food was absolutely fantastic at all meal times with a wide selection to suit any needs possible. It is plentyful and was always served hot. I am not sure what else to say other than I put on half a stone while I was away because the food was so good!! Especially the ice cream and yummy desserts!! The staff in the dining room work so hard all the time, clearing plates away from your table and they always have a smile on their face.
Breakfast was 7.30 am to 10.00 am, Lunch was 12.30 am to 2.00 pm and Dinner was 6.30pm to 8.00 pm or 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm. Snacks were available from 3.00 pm until 5.00 pm.

Entertainment Staff
The entertainment staff work so hard. There are so many fun activities going on throughout the day for everyone to take part. The kids club is run by Nevin and Gery from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm then from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm. The kids in our group were there everyday and were very sad to be leaving. The entertainment staff also put on the entertainment in the evenings in the Bar Salon. There is enough of a variety of entertainment provided and the best nights are when the entertainment staff put on their own shows. These are a must to see with may laughs guaranteed!!

Location:
The hotel is on the beach promenade and when you go out the back gate, you literally walk two feet and you are on the beach.
The promenade does get quite busy in the evenings but there is a wide variety of bars, shops, amusements, ice cream, restaurants etc
We only ate out twice in the two weeks because the food in the hotel was so good.

Not sure what else I can say about the Riu Helios, other than we had a fantastic holiday and we will definetly be returning there in the future. We spoke to the manager when were leaving and she was telling us that they are doing quite alot of work on the hotel when the season finishes at the end of September ready for next year and that the hotel will be upgraded to a five star hotel.
If you have any other queries or questions, please do not hesitate to send me a message and I will be very honest in my response.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask your travel agent for a room with a Balcony and a beach or pool view

Just back from a fantastic stay at the Riu Helios. Must say when we 1st arrived was not a happy camper as we did not have a balcony but was offered one at an extra cost of 14 lev pp per night but this was not the fault of the hotel but our travel company Thompson who must have had no great knowledge of this Hotel. So I would ask anyone going to this hotel to make sure they have requested a Balcony with their travel agent before they travel. That is the only bad point of the Riu Helios but we got over it quickly. The food at all meal times have plenty to offer from your full cooked to fresh made pancakes, fruit and croissants and fresh bread. Lunch and Dinner has fresh Pizza and pasta dishes on offer as well as plenty off meat dishes with sauce and a fresh cut meat every night fantastic choice.
The staff really cannot do enough for you and work tirelessly to make sure that your glass is never empty when at the bar a special mention must go to the Animation team who really don't stop trying to entertain you throughout the day and night. Tony the leader of the team is a real funny guy try the crappy Bingo it really is crap lol . Rooms are spotless clean with the maids doing a fantastic job.
The resort of Sunny beach is a real hectic busy place with plenty to do and see when eating out try Bistro Billys who do a barbecue grill fantastic food.

Me and my husband just got back from this hotel spending 2 weeks there, the Hotel was lovely and cleaniness was very good and nice spacious rooms, the food was very nice and a lot to choose from. We had a room at the front of the hotel on 4th floor and found it quite noisy at times thru the night with drunks going past shouting, if we were to go again we would stay just outside sunny beach

There is nothing majorly wrong with this hotel but it falls short of being 4 star. it would not take much for them to achieve this rating but the rep did say Thomson are considering downgrading the hotel.
The staff are amazing nothing is to much trouble they are all friendly and polite.
The hotel was clean and on the whole well maintained however there were holes in the bedlinen.
The brochure says its great for families whilst I am not arguing be aware there are an evergrowing number of single sex parties in this hotel and it can be noisy round the pool bar.
We were awoken most nights by these aforementioned groups on one occasion a very drunk German youth knocked our door and the three young girls in the room next door had a very loud drunken argument in the early hours of one morning however a phone call to reception put a swift end to that.
The rep great when things are going well however I heard one couple complaining to her about the noise and she did not want to know.
Trips do not book through Thomson book with the travel agency in the hotel they are much cheaper.
The food always a good selection but a bit samey and my daughter had a night of vomiting after eating the meatballs.
The weather well 40 c + when we were there.
The pool cleaned daily and towels provided for use by the pool but its the same old battle of who gets up earliest to put the towels out.
In summary a nice hotel spoiled by some minor details which would not be to difficult to remedy we had a great holiday here and would go back to this hotel just not in this resort.
Sunny Beach is pubs clubs and shops and that is it there is very little to do so if you want a holiday where you spend every day sunbathing and every night clubbing this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a balcony as not all rooms have them.

My boyfriend both aged 19 spent a week in the Rio Helios at the end of June 2012. We absolutely loved it and hopefully will be returning with friends next summer. The hotel itself was spotlessly clean, staff were all excellent, and kept us entertained throughout our stay with riffle shooting, water polo table tennis and many more activities. The weather was really good something which we had been concerned about before our stay, however we should'nt the weather was 30+ everyday. For food there was always something for everyone and we frequently missed breakfast so had a cold breakfast which was served from 10-12. In addition, there was a good selection of drinks with cold drinks on tap which was very handy when about the pool. There was also towels provided by the pool each day by the hotel. The only two not so good things I can say about the hotel is that we didnt have a balcony in our room, as we faced the fountain you have to ask for one before you arrive. Also do not visit the hotel doctor or pharamcy I developed a water infection and the doctor tried to charge me 300 levs for medicine and the pharmacy prescribed me diahorria tablets. But the pharmacy across the road from the hotel was very helpful and the lady spoke perfect english. We really liked the resort itself as it lively enough for us but not too clubby. We prefered the beach strip to the club strip were we spent most nights in cocktails bars on the beach. All have discounted drinks and sofas on the beach. One, I cannot remember what it is called was especially good and had hammocks and swings instead of stools at the bar. Would defiantely recommend this holiday and will return.
