“Modern Hotel - Terrible food”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Just got back yesterday from Sunny Beach, Hotel Globus is a nice hotel, cool modern smart.

However In typical Bulgarian warped style there are literally metres and metres of wasted unused areas. Vast lobbies, huge empty "medical area", huge corridors, massive vitamin bar with no one in it. etc etc Yet the pool area is cramped with 60 sunbeds for a capacity of over 300 guests. I had to get up at 6am to get a sunbed! NO EXAGERATION! Quite Bizarre! Do the hotel want to push guests to pay for sunbeds on the beach??? Do they have a vested interest in the beach?

The hotel staff get paid between £25 - 48 per week and is this the reason for the long faces and lack of service. That said and they soon smile if you tip them. Bulgaria is a very poor country and they are very jaded so don't expect any "have a nice day" or any pleasantries for that matter.

Now the restaurant- again excuse me if I sound cynical but this is another bizarre quandary that I am trying to weigh up. The restaurant in the hotel "Masala" is fabulous the food is excellent, the staff are friendly and the service is US style "bang bang bang" if you get the picture. The catch is this is not where you take breakfast or half board.

The Aqua Restaurant (next door with the same chef) where the half board is taken is terrible. Breakfast is passable, though its cheese, bread, ham and no bacon and the eggs are very undercooked. The dinner is just slop, don't even bother unless you like chip sandwiches which incidentally are nice. The meats are all in yucky sauces to disguise the quality and there is mixed bulgarian salad every night. No drinks are offered and the staff again (young girls) don't give a care except for if you happen to sit down without them seeing your room card. In that event they are over immediately to see your cards.
I personally think the food is so bad to encourage you to use the masala restaurant. Such a shame as with a bit of creative thinking the buffet could be turned into a salad bar or sandwich bar for no extra cost to the kitchen but then that wouldn't create additional income would it.

So all in all great two weeks, AC good, Rooms have MTV for kids, nice beds, nice quilts, power showers. Do not go half board and get up early to get a sun bed or put a towel out when you come in the night before because you will definitely NOT get a bed after 7.15am even on a dull day.

Room Tip: Pool rooms in high rise annexe are very noisy - go for a room overlooking road for a quiet room or s...

hotel has a great location and a pretty good pool. But, it also has some major issues - we were on the 2nd floor which has a mouse problem. I saw the first one while sitting on the throne (dont eat in the restaurant) when from under the bath a mouse appeared it ran to the door then back under the bath where I think it had a nest.

we reported this to the hotel management but when we returned to the room there were no traps set or any counter measures put in place.

in the evening on return to the room we usually saw several mice running down the lobby corridor.

the other issues were far to few sunbeds around the pool, when leaving the hotel you get accosted by the hotels restaurant touts to eat in the restaurant. you also get charged if you use the sun umbrellas around the pool.

oh and the hotel kids club was a joke

Okay we went to this hotel with low expectations and for the most part we got what we expected. The room was just what we wanted somewhere to crash with air conditioning a swimming pool and near the beach.

what the hotel didn't tell us about was the following:

- Rodents living in the hotel room.
- Food in restaurant recycled from previous day.(expected but still not nice)
- restaurant staff would have a full blown argument with manager every day in front of dinner
- Pool staff allowing guests to reserve sun beds at pool from 5 am.
- 50 sun loungers for a hotel that can hold over 300 guests.
- if you open the parasol next to pool loungers the life guard extorts money for their use. I was told by the hotel manageress this was a perk of the job for the pool staff.

Rodents
this was reported to the maids then reception and following no action the hotel manageress. At least the response from the maid and reception gave me hope that it would be looked at. However the response from the manageress was one of complete contempt for her guests - she told me that her hotel had no rodents and would not accept that my wife saw one running down the corridor or that we both saw one climbing the curtain or that my daughter saw one leaving the room under the door - she also didn't accept that both me and my wife were woken in the night on several occasions to something crawling over the bed.

On arriving at the hotel you are met with a strange musky odor at first we thought it might be mold or the humidity getting to the ill advised used of carpet on the floor and walls - however we now believe the smell was from rodent urine.

This hotel could be great as it has good sized rooms, good pool and a great location within the resort for families, couples or party animals. all it needs to do is:

- buy more sun loungers about another 60 should be adequate.
- sack the manageress and employ a professional.
- employ an environmental company like rentakil to remove and prevent the rodent problem.
- stop staff from skimming/extorting cash from residents.
- improve the food.

I would also bring all restaurants and bars within the hotel under the hotels control - the ones around the pool are leased to a local business man and he had touts promoting the use of the pool to tourists not staying at the hotel if they drank at the bar or ate at the poolside restaurant. During our stay this lead to several undesirable drunks breaking glass around the pool where children were playing and using fowl language and acting in an aggressive fashion - although they were eventually ejected from the hotel by security it was not very pleasant.

I would not recommend this hotel for the elderly as the baths are raised so high it is difficult to get in and out (im just under 6 foot and I struggled)

if it wasn't for the rodents and the manageress' response i would give the hotel a two rating however I feel it really does deserve the lowest rating.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor as rodents pref lower levels

This was our first time in Bulgaria and after reading previous reviews we were a little hesitant of what to expect. However I can say we had a fantastic week away at both the resort and hotel.
We only went bed and breakfast as our travel rep had pre warned us that the food and drink was so cheap in Bulgaria that it would be criminal to eat at the hotel any more than needed.

We were checked in swiftly and made our way to the room. It was a spacious apartment that easily slept the four of us (two adults and two children) with a brilliant view overlooking the bay of Sunny Beach. We were pleasantly surprised at the facilities/cleanliness of both the room and the hotel and set us off for a good start. The hotel has obviously gone through as recent revamp and is definitely one of the better looking ones we have seen whilst there and is perfectly placed. It is in the centre of a 7km stretch of the beach which is on your doorstep along with shops/bars/restaurants.

Unfortunately what we didn’t realise until the first night’s sleep was that the noise from the beach bar/clubs was really loud and went on to about 3am which resulted in lack of sleep.
The next morning we spoke to our Balkan Holiday rep (Rosen, who was really helpful and always pleasant) about the noise who then spoke with reception on our behalf and managed to sort a relocation to the front of the hotel. This worked out brilliantly as not only did we get a sound night’s sleep through the rest of the holiday but actually managed to effectively upgrade as we now had two rooms with interconnecting doors between us. Great!!

As a few other reviews have mentioned the food is not brilliant but is not bad either. It was just the same breakfast each morning of toast, sausages, beans, dodgy looking scrambled eggs, cereals and yogurts. Subsequently we didn’t eat here every morning as the onsite restaurant (Which isn’t run by the hotel) did a cracking English breakfast.

Both the inside and outside pools were well maintained and the kids spent many hours enjoying the freedom. As other reviewers have mentioned, the sun loungers were always occupied (by towels!!) but there were signs asking not to reserve sun loungers and apart from going around removing people’s towels, I’m not sure what else they could do for inconsiderate people.
However on the subject of sun loungers, check out the second floor terrace next to the indoor pool. It’s a cracking suntrap away from the hustle and bustle where there were always available sunbeds.

Sunny Beach is renowned for its nightlife and single sex groups, but as a family (maybe we were lucky) we didn’t have any issues whilst we were there and actually found the area reasonably family orientated being relaxed and trouble / group party free. However, we would be back at the hotel around 11pm so can’t speak for how the resort alters after this point.

If planning on going to Bulgaria, we would definitely recommend this hotel and resort with lots on offer for kids. We found the beach very clean and were able to wade several meters out into the sea. This is honestly the best beach we have been too with its golden sand both in and out of the water without any shells and stones underfoot. The only thing to watch out for is the burning hot sand.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the front of the hotel or if you prefer a sea view, ensure it is at the pool end to...

Awful food, only ate there once in the evening even tough we were half board. Breakfast bearable.
Poor staff attitude, lacking in customer service skills.
Not enough sunbeds, had to get up at 6am to get a sunbed. Complained to the rep and he said " that's how it is". Other days had to lie on concrete floor.
More a 3 star hotel.
Not a resort for children. Far too rowdy and full of drunken teenagers.
Has put me off returning to Bulgaria
Cleaner friendly and room cleaned daily.

I am very surprised to see the globus is so far down in rankings as after returning from a week here traveling with 2 adults and a baby we met up with family at the hotel and what a fantastic place. We arrived to the globus with two very nice porters gathered our luggage from the bus and checked in for us showed us to our hotel room pushed and made the two single beds into a double went through hotel information with us (5* arrival). Rooms and hotel cleaned to a high standard, rooms equipped with hairdryer, shower, plenty towels changed daily as housekeeping is done daily, tv with a couple of english channels but whos on holiday to watch telly?. Admittedly breakfast is not great however i never expect much from a hotel brekkie and to be honest i dont like being on a timescale to go to the dining room and eat between 8 and 10 im on holiday ill eat when im hungry.

The hotel should highlight the bars in the hotel are not associated with the hotel itself as its an outside company that run these which are also fantastic always a manager about who is happy to help with any problem and nice to have a blether to. Ladies the frozen strawberry daiquiris are to die for :) and at 10 lev for 2 thats less than a fiver for 2 cocktails you cant go wrong. Beer is 2.50 lev which is just over £1 also serves tetly tea if thats your tipple. My only one problem with the outside bar was the toilets were not cleaned thoroughly and by thoroughly i mean a child (i hope) had wiped boogers on the wall which were still there 5 days later.

Top tip: Dont bother paying for the hotel wifi when you can get free wifi at the pool bar password: billy123
The pool side bars have sky tv and are happy to let you watch the football boxing etc.
If you have children with you or a light sleeper you should decide if your willing to give up your sea view for the other side of the hotel as it is much quieter as the strip is on the beach side and the club 18-30 go till 3am at least.

Sunloungers are few and far if you want one you need to get down early 8am ish, there are 2 big buildings that make up the globus with about 500 rooms and only 100ish sunloungers. Parasols cost 5 lev to hire which was a bit of a bugbear as i had a 5month old baby with me so this was essential.

Location is the best bit about the globus you are right in the heart of sunny beach surrounded by shops and a beach about 10 steps away.

Overall myself and my family had a fantastic time at the globus we found the hotel and bar staff very friendly a nice smile and a good morning goes a long way.

Any questions im happy to help just drop me a message :)

The food I thought was cooked well but was the same every day, all salads had dressings or cheese on. Deserts was melon and bite size bits of cake if u were lucky enough to get some. Also It seemed as though it was the same chef catering for the addition on site private restaurant where the food was acceptional???? That being said we had a family room and it was amazing. All staff were very helpful and pleasant. The whole hotel was spotless clean. Fab holiday and I would defo return to this hotel just on a room only basis as it is cheap enough to eat out
