“Very good!!”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

At first I was a little bit afraid to go to this particular hotel, because of all the bad reviews, but really it was actually quite good. I have many nice things to say about the Pliska hotel. First, the staff was very friendly, made jokes and helped us when we needed. The only unpleasant experience was, when we spoke to the reception lady. She was quite angry all the time and in the end didn't even know what check-out means. :D In russian nor english :D But all the other reception ladies were nice.
There were two elevators. I understand that some people are saying that there were no floor numbers. When we were staying there, all floors and rooms were numbered. The pool was quite big and clean. Also sunbends were always available.
Yes, the rooms were a bit dated looking, but they were clean and neat. Also rooms were cleaned every day.
We had all inclusive package. I have to say, that food was not bad at all. Just nothing so special, but I think it was good. If you are going to take the all-inclusive, I think you will get plenty for a 3* hotel.
In the evening we liked to sit outside and hang out with friends(we were a group of 13 people). There was always good music playing.
Overall me and my friends had very good experience staying in the Pliska hotel.

I was at the hotel sunset during May 1 to 5 2013 with a group of 10 people. The hotel has a very good location.I've been to all inclusive but the food was the same and left to be desired.Rooms were spacious, clean, without a spectacular view.Pool was the only place nice, spacious, clean, with a pleasant temperature.I do not think I'll ever visit this hotel!

I am really disappointed with my stay at Hotel Pliska. I knew the hotel is very old, i had seen pictures of rooms and other facilities but in real it was worse. There is only one elevator for guests and staff, we decided to take the stairs but with no signs of floor numbers we were lost between floors. Finally we found our corridor where our room was. Corridors are long and very dark, only two light bulbs were working and i had to use the light of mu phone to insert the key and unlock the room. The room itself was clean but very small and ugly furnished. Like we were 25-30 years back in time. The room is so small that we have blue marks on our legs from bumping into sharp angles of the beds. As i said beds - very old and basic, so terribly hard and inconvenient.
The indoor pool was warm but very shallow and crowded with children. There were here and there small chairs to put your towel but not a single sunbed.
At the evening we went to have dinner. We have been to several hotels but we have never seen so poor dinner buffet. There were 3 salads - plain tomato with cucumbers, beans and plain green, olives, no cheese or cold starters, two soups, two ugly looking meatless stews and cutlets. That`s it. Not even the variety was poor but also the quality. Do not understand me wrong, i am not a food snob but this is unacceptable! Drinks also were not good, tasteless and watery.
After one night at rock hard mattresses we checked out early in the morning.
I have nothing good to say about this hotel. It needs major improvement. I do not recommend hotel Pliska to anyone.

The hotel has a very good location. It is clean and welcoming. I was there with three other people and we had booked All-Inclusive for 2 nights. Rooms are well heated. They are good but nothing special, cable tv, a fridge, and a balcony. There is an indoor swimming pool, which is fantastic - water temperature of 32 degrees celcius - the perfect one having in mind it's February. The hotel is well heated, obviously the central heating was working pretty well. Some of the staff are really helpful and kind and they try to make you feel at home, but others are unhelpful, lazy and ignorant, especially a girl at the bar. Variety of food is not huge, but it is tasty and fresh. The all-inclusive fizzy drinks are not fizzy at all, bad quality and bad taste as all other juices. My overall experience is better than average, let's say - good.

Take the description in the travel brochure with a pinch of salt. The promo photo shown above must have been the only time when all of the lights worked. Ok so the rooms were clean and serviced every day, fridge is a nice touch, TV only showed Bulgarian programs. Out on the balcony the light didn't work, nor did anyone else's, when we asked how to make it work we were told they are broken. Like a lot of things in Bulgaria when they break they don't get fixed. Around the pool were about as many sun loungers as could possibly fit, however, about 50% of these were broken. In the brochure it mentions a Gym, table tennis, sauna. If you want to use any of these it will cost extra, £5/hour for the gym!
I would not recommend paying for all inc unless you want to eat the same food day after day, fortunately we had chosen b&b, the breakfast was also the same every day but at least we were eating out the rest of the time. If you go room only or B&B you can upgrade to all inc. for 30Lv/day once you are there and have seen the food on offer.
The food and beer is cheap enough at Pliska not to warrant all inc, it was about the cheapest in Golden Sands.
Once upon a time Pliska was probably a nice 3* hotel but it would not be able to justify those stars if it was re-evaluated now.
For me the location was good, close enough to the action to walk in a short time but far enough away for a peaceful evening. In Golden Sands it is apparent that everyone is after every last Lev in your pocket, overcharging where they can, prices here are almost twice that of Varna. It is cheaper to pay the bus fare each way and dine in Varna than eat in Golden Sands.
We met people who have been going back to Pliska year after year, I can't imagine why.
As the title says, I will not be returning, to Pliska or Bulgaria

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view on 5th or 6th floor to avoid having to use 2 lifts but away from pool bar noise

Rooms were basic but clean, sheets and towels changed five days out of six. The fridge in the rooms is a good idea but of course it only works when you are actually in your room. Only one English language TV channel...True 2, ok if you want rubbish films, Little House on the Prairie or The Waltons!
Breakfast was disgusting, we lived on jam on toast (having to push the toast through the toaster with a fork as it was broken) and fruit. We were so glad we were not all inclusive (see photo!)! Someone was being seriously ill one evening as we passed their room!
The staff were mainly friendly.
As for Golden Sands as a resort, we liked it but if you are expecting egg and chips and everything geared up for the English then it's not for you. There is a lovely quiet beach right at the south end of the resort which you would never find unless you knew it was there...walk south from the bus stops, taking the left fork and look for two green garden sheds. Take the path in front of the sheds and this will lead to the beach, there is also a bar there that serves the best Shopka Salad or omelette we had all week.
The restaurants we found that were good are The Gibraltar right on the cross over point of the two Noddy Trains and The Asgard about 5 minutes walk uphill from the Pliska. Both good value for money.
We would return to Golden Sands but can see why it's not for everyone who's used to Spain.

The hotel was dated and very run down, the staff were not friendly or helpful, the food was horrible, reheated or over cooked, nothing was labelled so you had no idea what you were eating and it was repetitive, the hotel owners ate every night in the hotel, they certainly were not eating the food in the buffet, you were given miniature plates and cups to eat and drink from, the only good thing about the hotel was the swimming pool, I would not stay in that hotel again if you paid me.
