“Excellent stay at Alert Bay Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful stay at this lodge. The young couple Sarah and Ian were wonderful hosts. Sarah is an excellent cook. We had three delicious suppers, two of which were vegetarian at our choice. Sarah also made us excellent cinnamon french toast with real maple syrup for breakfast, at our choice. Merja still misses the french toast. The bedrooms are cottage-like with a large common room containing a friendly living room fire place. There are also several porches with a wonderful view of Alert Bay. There is excellent drinkable running water and flush toilets with adjoining shower stall. We had very good sleeps at this lodge. The sea air was so clean and inviting, the atmosphere so peaceful and quiet.

Merja and Rod

Room Tip: Ask if the Room with the porch and hammoch is available. :)

We stayed in the family room which has wonderful views from the deck as well as from the room.
We were warmly welcomed by our hosts, Sarah and Ian, who really made our stay feel as though we were with new friends. We walked into the beautiful main room for breakfast to fresh coffee and a lovely hot breakfast. It was so nice to stay in accommodations with character. Beds were comfortable and our room was spotless. We will definitely stay here again.

This is a wonderful place for a relaxing, peaceful long weekend. It's true that it's not sleek and modern, but it's extremely comfortable, cozy, clean and well-run. The room we stayed in was clean and well-furnished and the shower was lovely. As we were only in the bedroom at night the darkness was very welcome - best sleep I've had in ages. The food was lovely and the large common room at the lodge is one of the few such rooms I've been in that actually felt truly welcoming and made you want to curl up on the sofa with a book, or just spend hours gazing out the window at the ocean.

Alert Bay is definitely off the beaten track and not for people who want perfect packaged tourism. It's a *real* small town - not just a picturesque little village with no year-round inhabitants. If you're looking for an authentic get-away and not something contrived, Alert Bay is the place for you. The cultural centre is a great place to spend a pensive few hours, the Ecological Gardens are a great place to walk and the shoreline all around the island is just stunning - early morning walks when the eagles are waking up are magical.

It's especially good for children - the beach is a safe and fun place to play and there seemed to be no end to the variety of creatures to be found under rocks at low tide. Bring a dip-net and rubber boots!

We had a great time there (have visited 3 or 4 times now) and will definitely go back.

We stayed for 4 nights in this lodge. First impressions in the room matched first impressions as we landed on the island, ie. in desperate need of some money spending on it (especially having just left the up market city of Victoria). The room was dingy and tired, and a real disappointment was finding a plastic sheet over the mattress (very down market and not nice). However, the hosts were very welcoming, friendly and helpful and the main living area was open plan dining and sitting with a warming wood burner. This made for a very homely atmosphere where we felt we could come and go as we pleased and really chill out. This offset the tired room and made the stay acceptable. Breakfasts were fairly basic but the evening meals were wholesome and tasty. The location is a good 20 min walk from the ferry, and you will need this as there is little to do on the island beyond one day. We were booked on various wildlife tours but had to get back to the mainland for these.

We chose Alert Bay Lodge from the description on their website and the excellent reviews it had received on Trip Advisor. It sounded right up our street - quiet, hearty breakfast, excellent views, plenty of walking, wildlife etc. etc. Unfortunately this was not the experience we had. The island itself was quite derelict, with many businesses and restaurants closed down, but the Lodge was also quite dated. We stayed in Room 4, which despite being large and having plenty of windows was very dark and dingy, not helped by the dark furnishings. The room was not very clean, there was a layer dust in the bedside cabinets and the bedding had not been ironed. The mattresses were plastic which made for quite a sweaty night. Although we had a fridge in the room, there were no glasses or mugs anywhere in the room.
We immediately decided that we didn't want to stay the 3 nights we had booked, and booked somewhere off the island for the last night. This decision was re-enforced when we went to breakfast the following morning. We were "greeted" by an unwashed host and his dog and shown the "Continental" breakfast i.e. white bread for toast, the dregs of a bag of granola (not enough for 2) and a bowl of fruit. We sat at a table covered in crumbs, presumably from the night before as we were first for breakfast, and were offered a hot breakfast of eggs or pancakes......not the delicious looking menu advertised on the website. We opted for pancakes, which we then heard being microwaved. We got 2 small ones each with syrup, which we ate with the dog sat begging from us. We had a similar experience the second morning, although there was a fresh bag of granola there was very little milk, but there was also dried spillages of food on the table from last night's dinner as well as crumbs. We were only offered pancakes "like you had yesterday" this time, as were the couple who came in after us, though they had to have our left over syrup.
The room was not serviced while we were there and the bin was overflowing by the time we left. I don't know if this would have been the case if we had stayed a further night.
All in all, we were glad to leave as the dingy room made me depressed. We were much happier the following night in a bright and sunny motel room at Qualicum Beach. It was worth the extra money, as we got no refund for the night we missed (nor did we ask for one).
It seems a shame, as the island has potential to be lovely, but needs some money spending on it, which it can presumably only get from tourism. People will stop going if a lot of the businesses are shut down. Some locals at Port Hardy suggested we were "brave" going to Alert Bay, so it clearly doesn't have a good reputation with them.

I’ve discussed your concerns with Rich, who manages the lodge with his partner, Emma. We are all very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and apologize for the inconveniences you encountered. As you can glean from previous reviews, we pride ourselves in the high level of care we provide our guests. Many of these reviews cite Rich and Emma.

During your stay, Emma was suddenly called away. This, combined with a full occupancy at the lodge, overwhelmed Rich to some degree.

As with most bed and breakfasts in BC we do not clean rooms daily. The bin in your room was clean and empty when you arrived. Just a word to Rich and he would have gladly emptied it. He would have also provided you with drinking glasses – or rectified just about anything else we overlooked.

Here on the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, the communities of Port Hardy, Port McNeil and Alert Bay rely mainly on a resource-based economy (fishing, logging and mining). It’s been a tough go for many, but these communities work jointly and optimistically with each other to diversity their economies, including much needed tourism revenue. The people in these communities are friends, neighbours and have family members in common. Alert Bay itself is a genuine island community, one with much to offer those who are comfortable in non-traditional tourism settings and who appreciate its cultural diversity. Many of our guests love this little corner of the world and come back.

As soon as we walk into the door we felt right at home. After spending the last 2 weeks in noisy and impersonal hotel room, the lodge was such a delight.

But what made your stay so special, was meeting Emma & Rich. They both went out of their way to make us feel so comfortable. Emma cooking was amazing, needed to do lots of walking while we where there. Very clean and comfortable, and I can't forget Saskey there beautiful dog.

We meet some lovely people while staying at the lodge. It was so nice to have the change to sit and h ave dinner with other people that are traveling, and hear all there stories.

We will most definitely turn one day soon. Was also lovely to meet their friend Rob, the oracle of the island.

I had a really nice stay here at Alert Bay Lodge - its very basic, but the perfect place to get away from it all. The decor is very rustic, and is probably due for an update in the next few years but they have been kept very clean over time, and had everything you can expect when travelling to a remote area. I enjoyed walking around the island and my host was very approachable and nice to chat with.Next time I go back I'd stay longer than the 2 nights I spent there!
