The view, the food, the wine, the service!
All outstanding! My husband and I found this to be a piece of heaven; it was as delightful as some of our fondest moments in Cape Town.
We were 5 for dinner and sampled different dishes and wines. Everything was wonderful as was the friendly service of the lovely staff. It would be a fabulous spot for a destination wedding or any celebration.

This lodge is in an absolutly beautiful setting, just a few hours from Vancouver. The gormet dinner on the outdoor patio was a real treat. The staff was warm and friendly and very helpful. Even the owner stopped by to chat. We loved kayaking at low tide and seeing all of sea creatures and the seals swimming around us. We stayed just one night, but definitely plan to return (it's so close to Vancouver) to take part in more of the activities offered...not to mention the spa!

We had a nice time at the West Coast Wilderness Resort. We stayed for two nights (Thursday and Friday) in the middle of August. We found our time to be enjoyable; however there were some aspects of our trip which were less than favourable.

THE GOOD:
-We were allowed early check in, despite arriving 3 hours early! Very kind of them, especially since we had such a long journey.
-Gorgeous views. Wow. What a location. Beauty is everywhere. Really untouched. Just breathtaking.
-The staff for the most part are friendly and accommodating. They try their best to help out, and offer suggestions. The daytime wait staff was wonderful, as was George at the front desk However there was an underlying feeling that they were short staffed.
-The lunch at the restaurant! We ate lunch twice and both times were fabulous! Big portions and very delicious. Try the chicken focaccia club-house, and the soup or salad (both are winners). The daytime cooks outperform the evening ones by far!
-The rooms are nicely appointed with all the necessities. Ours was a forest view room, but had a peak-a-boo view of the ocean as well! We found the bed to be particularly comfortable and assisted us in having a relaxing sleep.
-Activities – if you have a deep pocket there are many adventures to be had (heli-hiking for $1300!!), kayak rentals, zodiac tours, etc.

THE NOT SO GOOD!!
-Dinner Service- we had a particularly horrible dinner service. We booked a reservation for 7:30pm. Unfortunately when we arrived the place was busy and we were shown a seat on the couches while they put something together for us. We sat there for 15 minutes, until we saw other couples being seated. It seems like we were forgotten. We were finally seated after reminding one of the waitress’s that we existed, and ordered our dinner with our server. Unfortunately that was the last we saw of her. She disappeared for the rest of the night, having some one else bring us our food, neglecting to refill our drinks (which were empty), or ask us how things were tasting. For an establishment that is charging high-end prices, we expected at least minimum service. The diner itself was small portioned and mediocre in taste. In fact my husband was so unsatisfied after our $100 dining experience that we ended up driving to Pender Harbour to grab pizza. Just depressing!
- Accessibility/Communications: This was perhaps our biggest ‘shock’ of our stay. We had no idea before arriving that there was no cell phone reception in the area. There also is no phone (landline) in the room, no wifi in the entire resort (except in the lobby), and the satellite tv in the rooms was incredibly spotty (in and out our entire stay for certain channels- very frustrating especially for the evening times when everything closed down). Although we eventually enjoyed the experience of being ‘unplugged’ and in the wilderness, we do think that phones in the room would be of benefit since there is no cell service. For us, wanting to call and check in on our kids at home, it would have been nice. There is a phone you can use in the lobby, however we tried this on the second day, and it didn’t work. We even enlisted the assistance of the front desk, and they said that it has been having problems all day. Thanks for the help!
-Hot tub- not working. It was up for ‘maintenance’ during our entire stay. Why does this happen during the busiest season?
-Entertainment – Lets be clear this resort is in the wilderness. Don’t expect much to do after dinner and into dark. Everything locks and shuts down. WCWL perhaps invest in some board games that could be borrowed (for free), group activities, or even a night tour? If you are not someone who goes to bed at 9pm then BRING SOMETHING TO DO!! Everything that was offered at WCWL had a cost associated with it. Be prepared and bring your wallet to prevent boredom.
-There were a few other small issues that we encountered during out stay including: hair in the shower upon our arrival and being unable to find someone at the front desk to help us on a few occasions (particularly in the evening…no one is around after 7pm!!!!!).

All in all it was a very expensive trip, that we left feeling uncertain about. The beauty of this resort was astounding, and we are very happy we visited this part of the coast. However, we did not find this to be the ‘resort experience’ that one would expect for the price. We will try somewhere else next time.

Our stay at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge was fantastic! The rooms were clean and spacious (we stayed in a Forest Suite). The staff was friendly and helpful. The views from the hotel were gorgeous. The offered adventures were amazing! We went on a nighttime kayak tour, which was absolutely incredible! The extras were reasonably priced and well worth it. Don't forget to make a side trip to the Skookumchuck Rapids while there - definitely make sure you see them twice; at high tide and low tide. I highly recommend a trip to the West Coast Wilderness Lodge.

Dropped the kids off at the YMCA summer camp near Langdale and headed over to WCWL (the adult summer camp ☺) As you leave the car and walk through the right side of the lodge you get to experience the same feeling and view that everyone else has commented on. It is truly spectacular. They have positioned their main lodge at what must be the perfect height for the perfect view/perspective of the harbor that surrounds them. We paid for the package that included the breakfast and dinner, zodiac to Princess Louis Inlet and the Kayak excursion.

The owners are still on site and ever present. You can not only tell, but feel their passion for the place and I can not believe the excellent and dynamic staff/team they have put together. Everyone seems so happy to be there and working at this wonderful place.

We got to stay in room # 605 which is one of the six new ocean view rooms. If I had any complaints it would be that the room walls and this structure could have been designed with more privacy and soundproofing. We could hear everything going on in both rooms around us and with multiple couples sitting on their view decks/balconies it tended to take away from the relaxing view as you caught up on six different people’s lives. Anytime the people above us used the bathtub, shower or toilet it sounded like the water was flowing down and into our room. The showers are so small that I will never again make a small shower joke while on a cruise ship. It sounded like they were/are ready to build another six ocean view units next to these and also six more units down by the water. If I could give one suggestion it would be to spend the money on noise reduction and a luxury bathroom experience. You are starting to raise the pricing to that very high end level and the expectations will surely follow. For everyone else try to get the room on the top floor of the 600 building and to the far left side since that would have the most privacy (the room on the top right has a huge window on the side that allows the entire staff and guests sitting in the lounge and restaurant to look in all the time).

The last paragraph should not deter anyone from staying at this place since the owners, staff and surroundings are so perfect that these slight imperfections must be overlooked! Our stay at the WCWL was the start of a very peaceful and rewarding vacation that will stay in our minds and hearts for a long time after!

Room Tip: I guess either room 601 or 603? Whichever one is on the upper floor on the far left away from the ma...

There are many packages to choose from, my wife and I chose the kayak lessons, we chose a forest view room ( suite 303 bloody awesome room), if you can afford it get an ocean view room but 303 was huge and great. We also ordered two meals a day at the restaurant. The people who work at WCWL are amazing, sincerely grateful to be working in one of the most beautiful places in the world, helpful, happy and freindly. The food was great. I would recommend that if you are light eaters maybe just get the breakfast or just order off the menu. The food is all good and the meal packages are off the menu but there is a very good pub next door that you can also have lighter and slightly cheaper fare. The prepay just limits your options but honestly, there are not a lot of options in the area. The kayaking was great, we ate outdoors for all meal but one and even saw a whale. There is no cell phone service and the wifi is sketchy but available. Skookamchuck rapids are close by and is a well worthy hike. We loved staring out at the mountains and water, the kayaking was great exercise and the course was well taught by Leanne. The only complaint was sitting at dinner one night we were enjoying our company and the silence of nature when they put on music from the 50/60's hokey, bad music, even if it was good music it was not necessary. We left relaxed, happy, and satisfied. WCWL does their absolute best to ensure you are looked after. We will be back.

Room Tip: Do one of the activities!
