“interesting lunch stop”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2013

on a trip through the region we stopped for lunch. We had been craving Russian food and this place fit the bill. Both the special that my wife ordered and the meal that I had were very filling and quite reasonably priced. A bit lacking in atmosphere but the service was fine and there was definitely local colour!

“Delicious home cooking (Russian specialties), simple homey atmosphere.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2013

The Borscht Bowl is a wonderful unpretentious restaurant in Grand Forks (where I live), just off the highway on Market Ave. It has consistently good home-cooked meals at a fair price - a few dollars more than fast food but worth it. A lot of the local Doukhobors and other locals eat there so you know the Russian food is genuine, well made and not overpriced. Good meatless options as Doukhobors are traditionally vegetarian. The service is efficient and friendly and the restaurant has a homey, warm atmosphere. You could say it is substance over style, except the style is a large part of its charm. Have only been there during daytime, may only have daytime hours. If you want fast food, then go for fast food but if you want delicious food and small town charm try the Borscht Bowl.

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2013

Eaten here several times just for something different. Very over priced for their Russian food and you don't get much for what you pay. The quality is okay but no where near the quality of Russian food I get ay home or you used to get at the other restaurants here years ago. Safe to try but bring a thick wallet.

“Outdated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

Authentic food. Limited menu. The decor is aging badly inside and out and the serving staff were quite moody and rude. Badly in need of an upgrade, yet the borscht at least was very good. Great location /potential. Poor service/decor. Overpriced.

“NO french fries”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2012

We had a lunch special that was anything but special. It was some sort of meat filled perogy with virtually no meat & a watery outer casing that was spongy & wet.
To top it off the "meal" was grossly over priced. One would think that places like this would benefit from the loss of the Grand Forks Hotel, but at this rate they may not survive the summer.
