This is the second time that I have been kayaking with Kingfisher and we're already wondering when we can organise the time to go on a longer trip to Haida Gwai.
We went on the 5 day Nootka Island / Nuchatlitz Inlet trip led by Andrew the owner. We wanted to see how the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island compared with the Broughton Archipelago which we visited several years ago with our daughters. Both locations are teeming with wildlife and, on this occasion, we had the privilege to see lunge-feeding humpbacks relatively close as well as rafts of sea otters, black bears on the beaches (and wandering through our camp!) and a small pod of orca. We love this place and appreciate Andrew's deep knowledge of the wildlife. He's a pretty handy cook as well and we have memories of splendid meals around the camp fire on remote beaches.. we'll be back..

The team could't be better. The little island and the kayks great. It was what we expected about food - Silka 10!, acomodation and the kayaks trips. landscape great. Everyday lunch outside the camp.
We made 2 trips everyday to see the wild animals.
But if you want to see the animals close to you, maybe think in another way to do that!

Thank Denise G

Hi MergulhoBaliTulamben, Thank you for the nice review. It was a pleasure kayaking with you this summer.

Your comment regarding proximity to wildlife is a good one for others who may be considering joining one of our tours. We pride ourselves on ensuring that our wildlife viewing practices have minimal impact on the behaviour of all the animals we are lucky enough to share the waters we kayak in.

In the case of marine mammals (like whales, dolphins, and sea lions) there are strict government guidelines on how close we can approach (this applies to all boats, whether kayaks, large whales watching boats, or small pleasure craft). The closest we can approach is 100 metres, but in cases where we are having a noticeable effect on their behavior we give them even more room. Of course the animals don't read the rules and occasionally approach us closer but we do not attempt to put ourselves in these situations to ensure we do not disturb them. Ensuring good wildlife viewing practices helps ensure the well being of the animals and that we can continue to share these waters with these magnificent animals.

In late August I took the 5-day Nuchatlitz Inlet/Nootka Sound trip. This pristine, off-the-beaten-path area is truly an unspoiled slice of wilderness heaven. The chance to view sea otters was one of the main reasons we chose the Nuchatlitz trip and we were not disappointed!

As this was our first wilderness-style kayak trip my girlfriend and I were a bit apprehensive, but Andrew Jones (Kingfisher’s owner and lead guide on this trip) immediately put us at ease with his relaxed, easy-going manner and professional and informative pre-trip briefing.

The wildlife viewing on this trip was incredible. Humpback whales lunge-feeding on schools of herring, sea otters (sometimes in rafts 50 or 60 thick) and black bears foraging on the beach were just some of our daily highlights. We never had a day that we didn’t have some sort of amazing wildlife experience.

If you’ve never been to the west coast of Vancouver Island, the scenery is a perpetual feast for the eyes. We even had some postcard-perfect west coast sunsets.

One of the best things about this trip was the relaxed, easy pace. We were never in a rush; there was always time to stop and enjoy the moment. Each campsite had its own unique characteristics – a log-strewn beach on an exposed outer island or a sheltered sandy peninsula with sand as fine as powder – and always within easy paddling distance. The guides always seemed to know the perfect time to pull in to a beach for lunch and a hot drink.

I have to mention the food - this was not your average campfire cuisine! Meals were fabulous: baked salmon, curry, pasta, fresh fruit, Greek salad with hummus and pita, fresh-baked banana bread (don’t ask me how they pulled this off with just a two-burner propane stove!). The fresh fruit chocolate fondue on our last night was a nice touch, too.

Overall impression: A truly wonderful experience from start to finish. I had high expectations going in and this trip exceeded them in every way. Amazing wildlife, incredible scenery, friendly people, great food – what more could you ask for?

I highly recommend Kingfisher Adventures for anyone looking to take a sea kayak trip in British Columbia.

Anton C, Thank you for such and in-depth review of your time kayaking the west coats with us. It truly was a memorable trip. The humpback feeding displays on this particular trip were some of the best I have ever seen. I hope to see you both on a future adventure with us soon.

We just completed the six-day Orca Waters Explorer Tour and it was wonderful. The guides were very knowledgeable on wildlife biology, First Nation culture and the area. They navigated the tides, the currents and the weather superbly. We saw orcas, awoke to the sounds of humpback whales, paddled up to an island where a black bear was eating berries on the shore, and saw all kinds of dolphins, sea lions, eagles and other wildlife. There were novice paddlers on our trip and they were confident and comfortable by the end of the week. Be sure to take the advice on the website and buy trip insurance. A family emergency threatened to interrupt out trip and we would have been out the substantial deposit.

With zero sea kayaking experience, I opted for the Orca Waters Explorer Kayak Tour. It is a 6 day nomadic trip that explores the Broughton Archipelago and Johnstone Strait. Heeding Andrew’s advice, I made the time to do a whale watching tour before this trip. I highly recommend doing this as you are in a natural environment and wildlife runs to its own timetable. No orca on this occasion (did see them on the whale watch tour) but there was plenty to observe. This is sensory overload.

Liam and Ben were our guides who were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and incredibly resourceful. They really did an awesome job. We camped at three different campsites over the course of the trip. The sites were fairly primitive but this added to the adventure. Maggy Point was my favourite site as the views were simply incredible.

I had a great time, laughed a lot, met some extraordinary people and learnt a couple new skills. This was an excellent holiday.

Hi Kiwishells, Thank you for the nice review of our Orca Waters Explorer tour. We don't always suggest joining a whale watching tour before your kayak tour but for our late June and early July trips the reliability of orca sightings is lower than later in the season. So it definitely increases your odds and I am glad to hear that it worked out for you. As you mentioned the overall scenery, wildlife, and experiences is enough to overwhelm most people even if you mis the orcas. We hope to see you again soon on another one of our adventures.
