“nice setting but the hospitality and upkeep poor”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

My husband and I stayed here last summer for 4 nights. While the wildlife in and around the property is wonderful, and the only reason to visit in my estimation, the lodge itself was lacking. Most of our problem with our stay had to do with the owner and wife. The owner while TRYING to be amusing is mostly offensive and the wife is very sarcastic, offensive and unfriendly..not the kind of hospitality that would be expected at this sort of lodging. We were having a very nice conversation with another couple late one evening in the lounge and the owner (who had spent part of the evening trying to monopolize the chat) came in and basically told us we should go to bed. This was after chastising us for drinking our own alcohol earlier in the evening. I think he did not want to fire up the heating in the lounge anymore that night that resulted in the strong suggestion we should head for our rooms. The lodge itself was okay, rooms small but cold and the lounge could have used a good cleaning. The property/decking itself had issues as well. Both just looked neglected. We are disappointed we spent so much on a mediocre experience....BEWARE.

Room Tip: I would choose one of the external cabins before I would stay in the lodge proper if I were to go th...

The setting is very nice but far away from everything. Port Mc Neill is the closest small village and is 20 min driving. The rooms are clean but very small and it was a problem to stow away our travel bags and find place for the backpack and photo equipment. We were lucky to see river otters from the lodge but we were send into the rain by the lady of the house because we were taking pictures thru the open door. Argument; it's too cold, but it was cold anyway because there was no heating nor fire. The owner tried to be friendly but the lady isn't friendly at all.
The food and especially the crab is georgious.
For less money one can have a splendid room three times the space, with full kitchen and sitting area, right into the bay of Port Mc Neill and also with wildlife at teh front door. Little bit disappointed and too expensive for the offered quality.

Room Tip: We stayaed here with three couples and were not impressed. Overall impression of the hole group is r...

My family and I had some friends visiting with us from Australia so we decided that a trip 'up island' would be in order. I chose the Hidden Cove Lodge based on other Trip Advisor reviews. What a very disappointing experience. I attempted to contact these guys on a number of occasions and when I did eventually speak with someone they told me that they didn't normally 'do' reservations so she would get someone to call me back later that evening. No one contacted me so I emailed again. I did get a response this time but boy was it curt. I emailed back just to confirm the booking and check a couple of details and I received such a rude reply we decided not to continue with the booking. How very sad! This place had stunning reviews and I was really disappointed with the customer service. We have regular visitors throughout the year and would have loved to have utilized this place but we just couldn't bring ourselves to go.

As soon as you get to the main entrance of the Lodge, you see a warning message which tells you to keep the main door closed since bears and racoons are around. It is true! Just when we got in the hall we so three bears and one raccoon. Outside of course!
Rooms are very comfortable and with all facilities you might need.
Food is great! At breakfast (very good, prepared by Dan) you are asked whether you wanna join the dinner in house or not. There is the chance to choose between two different menus (meat or fish). Both of them are delicious!
The best in the Lodge are the long chats with Dan, the owner. We spent two nights chatting with him and the last day we have got even a hug. The fact is that at the Hidden Cove Lodge you are not considered just a visitor (therefore a number) but an active member. With my wife we decided we are gonna come back as soon as the chance shows up.
Absolutely recommended!

Great location with wildlife on the doorstep. Good base for exploring the north of Vancouver Island. Kayaking, whale watching and bear watching trips available nearby. It is possible to arrange pickup from the lodge's own jetty for bear/whale watching. Rooms plain but very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Food very good, especially fish - very fresh and well cooked. Try the crab! Reasonably priced wines and cocktails. Dan was a fund of information about the local area and wildlife. He also cooks breakfast from 06.30 for those starting early - all done with a smile.

We spent two weeks on Vancouver Island and our stay at Hidden Cove was definitely the highlight of the trip. The south end of the island (Victoria and Tofino) are certainly more touristy and busy. Hidden Cove Lodge is remote but easy to get to, we saw bears, eagles, orca and dolphin from the living room! This B&B is off the grid and relies on wind, solar and generator. Keep this in mind during your stay-long luxurious showers are a no-no, water conservation is a must. They have a restaurant with excellent meals, or if you prefer there are restaurants in Telegraph Cove as well (about 20 minutes away). They have a dock and most guest reserved whale watching (Mackay Whale Watching was excellent), and grizzly bear watching tours, both of which pick you up right at the lodge. This is a clean, rustic B&B the owners take pride in their self built home and the critters who inhabit the area.

We stayed here for three nights in September, the weather was great and the wildlife viewing was wonderful, bears on the beach, raccoons on the balcony, and whale watching trips available out of Telegraph Cove (25 mins drive away) However, as an hotel it felt less than comfortable. There was no-one on reception when we arrived, our room seemed a little cramped with no appreciable view and there were prescriptive notices dotted around. We felt the prices charged for dinner to be rather high. A simple thing like a cup of tea or coffee in the late afternoon was not easy to obtain. As this was the end of the season the 3km dirt road from the main road was showing wear and tear. This is a rustic, rural experience but we felt it could do with some 21st century updating and we would have appreciated being given access to wifi.

Room Tip: Avoid room 9, you can only look out the window by climbing on the bed
