We stayed one night in Port McNeill here, but had left our booking too late so this was the only place we could find. It was hard to pay the price tag, but it was very clean &comfortable, with great bathtub. A lot of workers seemed to be staying there so the parking lot was a little noisy in the morning with big diesel work trucks starting up, but otherwise very quiet. Was happy we stayed - the pictures online didn't do it justice (though their claim of "elegantly appointed" is not what I would consider an accurate description). We were happy with our decision to stay in the end (though we will try for a B&B in the area instead next time just to save some money).

Room was large and very clean. I was pleasantly surprised, especially after the previous nights disastrous stay in Prince Rupert. The night desk clerk was very nice. And there was a breakfast provided in the morning which helped offset cost of the room. I do understand that "location is everything" and there are limited options on this part of the island which in part explains the higher price.

Although the Black Bear considers itself a resort, it is a motel of good room-quality for those, who arrive or depart with the Inside-Passage-ferry. So there is a huzzle and a buzzle late in the evenings (ferry arriving) and early morning (ferry departing). Spending a night there going to/coming from the ferry is OK. But I would not stay there longer for vacation. The rooms are good, spacious, new and clean. But the price is fairly high (too high) for a motel. Breakfast is awful.

This is the second time I've stayed here with my wife.We had a very comfortable room with a view across the town and over the water towards Sointula and Malcom Island. The room - more mini-suite - had cooking facilities and there were two large gas barbecues that guests could use. The staff made us very welcome and the complimentary breakfast is one of the best I've had in North America. I would recommend the Black Bear to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in or near Port McNeil.

Avoid the run down overpriced places in Port Hardy catering to captive BC Ferries trade,
and stay in Port McNeill down the road, service centre of north island. Compact and attractive town with most services, and BC Ferry to Alert Bay and Sointula, worth the short trip. Several older hotels and motels, Haida Way has good food, Black Bear is across the road and fairly new, family operated, built by owners who ran a local cedar mill. Good personal service and staff all try to help. Attractive timber sided buildings, with a row of cabins being built. Large for a motel, lovely views over the town and harbour, huge car park for trailers and campers., and a covered outdoor eating area, with bbqs. All modern, well maintained and very clean. Breakfast room in reception building has a pretty good buffet with most standards, fruit, yogurt, eggs, waffles, toasters, pastries and good coffee. Doubles as a meeting room for groups. Several good pubs and restaurants down on the harbourfront.
Satellite flat panel TVs, wifi reaches most areas on the large site, complimentary computer in reception area.
Not quite a resort, although aiming for that and getting there; has a spa building with good indoor pool, whirlpool, saunas, exercise equipment for guests, and massages/beauty treatments.
High end prices for the area but worth it considering the facilities. Have stayed there several times, planning a group trip, consistent and friendly service.

Room Tip: All rooms good, built around central parking area, more privacy upstairs. Downstairs you can park outside room.
