“What a find! A lodge to ourselves!”
Reviewed 29 November 2011

Arriving in Port Renfrew on a whim, we found that many of the places to stay had just 'closed for the season'. Following a sign to Big Fish Lodge, we were eagerly greeted by Lucas, who showed us in, cranked up the heating and made us feel at home .... the fact that there was no one else there certainly helped the homely feeling.
Obviously an old lodge, we found it very clean and well set up.
After cooking our own breakfast the following morning, Lucas dropped in to get us some local tips and provided a hand drawn map to 'Avatar Grove' - a hidden patch of old growth forest 20 min drive away. Magical.
Our 13 month old loved crawling around the vast lower level, as well as 'conquering' the staircase numerous times.

Room Tip: The best room is the double room with the beatiful views through double-glass doors.

We (a group of 11) stayed there the night before we did the West Coast Trail and then again the night we finished it. Luc was a fantastic host and made stay even better. The night we came off the trail we were all ready to die. We stayed in the lodge on the ocean side of the road. It's a great place and the breakfast Luc prepared the next morning was from heaven (after a week of dried rations). My only regret is it's not somewhere we are more likely to go again as we would definitely stay there whenever we could

Big Fish Lodge is in a little known Town on the West Coast of Vancouver Island named Port Renfrew. If a rustic getaway is what you are looking for away from the hustle and bustle of city life then this is your lodge.
You awaken to the sounds of the ocean lapping up on shore and possibly a seal barking in the harbour. The lodge itself is like it is stuck in time, no cell phone, no TV, just you and your company enjoying your time together. The meals are wonderful and they will cater to your dietary needs. There is a nice little restaurant nearby if you want a beer and maybe some clams, Halibut and fries but I doubt that you will need to go there to eat as you will be well fed at the lodge.
Port Renfrew is the head of the West Coast Trail and if you wanted to go a night early to get an early start on your hike I would recommend this place. Just so you are aware, you have to book access to the West Coast Trail and it is not for the faint of heart. Make sure your prepared for a tough hike if that is why your headed there although I am sure those that go for the hike are already aware of how hard it is.
Salmon fishing is just starting to pick up here now so get your license and rod and reel and good luck.
The website attached describes the many attributes of this area so take a look at it and see for yourself the beauty that is the west coast of B.C.

What a place, with such extraordinary people to accompany the views and the sound of the Ocean. It was so relaxing having a fire on the beach while watching the sun drift away, it's times like this when you wish time would stand still. Thank you Port Renfrew and Big Fish Lodge. Forever in my Heart

I'm glad that I found this place and will definitely be recommending it to others. The lodge is actually a renovated waterfront house. The bedrooms are not that luxurious (the bathrooms are former closets) but the view and the waterfront location are amazing.

The main floor has a pool table, couches, games, books, etc. There is a communal kitchen and fridge (make sure you bring your own food, especially fruits and veggies, because Port Renfrew's general store is very basic) and a deck with a BBQ and picnic table. They also have a beach fire pit.

They have excellent off-season rates, and will cook a hearty homemade breakfast for a small fee (breakfast is included in peak season rates). They can also pack you a lunch for hiking or fishing.

Room Tip: take the balcony or bathtub- avoid room w/ no view

Stumbled onto Big Fish when we came to Port Renfrew to start the West Coast Trail. It was a high light of our trip. Beautiful lodge, great food, and interesting conversation. Zach treated us like guests in his home and sent us of to the trail with full bellies.

I had the chance to spend the night after i had finished the west coast trail and thought it was perfect. You couldn't have asked for anything better, the view, the beach, the food, the atmosphere just everything was fantastic.
