We'd been told that this was the best Japanese restaurant in Sechelt Coming from North Vancouver where we have probably 25 or more Japanese restaurants, we were doubtful that Sushi Bar 5517 was THAT good. We've also been chowing down on the fabulous fare in Vancouver since the mid 70's when sushi and Japanese restaurants were not a fad.
Well, it is really good Japanese food! We've been there twice now in 2 weeks while visiting the Sunshine Coast.
The first time we were there for lunch and I chose a seafood salad which was fabulous. I don't remember the name, but by the menu I see on-line, in looks like the Kaiso Salad with some sashimi added. Good, lunch-size portion and really tasty dressing. My husband had several rolls which were also excellent. His judge of a good Japanese restaurant is based on their B.C. Roll; must have crispy BBQ'd salmon skin with a litte salmon still attached. Sushi Bar 5517 did not disappoint!
The 2nd time there was at dinner. It was packed! SO busy the staff were flying! The husband and wife owners from Japanese were cheerfully ensuring that everyone was looked after. The two wait staff were prompt and curteous. I ordered the Chirashi Sushi, which is my test of excellence. It was very good. Generous pieces, an interesting variety of sashimi and fresh, still slightly warm rice. WAsabi very fresh and hot! Ginger not dyed!
The prices seem quite reasonable, about mid-range to Vancouver Mainland Japanese Food Restaurants. The ambience is pretty typical; nice but not extravagant. There were all ages of patrons. If you're looking for a quiet dinner, you'd be best to avoid peak time, but DO GO as you'll be very pleased with your meal!
We will definitely be going back.
