“A peaceful & memorable visit”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

If you love history then a night (or several) at the Chateau Albert Hotel is a MUST while visiting the Grande Anse & Caraquet area on the Acadian Peninsula. It is located ONSITE at the Acadian Historical Village. - We arrived at the village, parked our car, and began our "package deal" for a musical dinner evening, a continental breakfast, and tour of the historical village.

Since all patron vehicles are not permitted on the village site, we were met in the parking by a chauffeur in a period costume driving a ca1930 Model-T Ford who told us about the hotel history and what to expect at the historical village and places to visit nearby. - He deposited us at the covered entrance to the hotel and carried our luggage to the welcoming desk clerk who was knowledgeable and very personable. Our 2nd floor suite (corner suite) was spacious, bright, clean, and decorated in the 1907 style...complete with an antique bath.

In the evening, after a wonderful meal in the period-decorated dining room, we enjoyed Acadian fiddle music and story telling. Simply awesome! Later, while sipping wine on the large balcony, we listened to the cry of the loons, the clip-clop of horses, and the mooing of distant cattle. It was very soothing; a great remedy for releasing technology stress!

After breakfast we toured the elaborate Acadian Historical Village. The first phase of the village is from 1770 (after the 1755 deportation) to 1900 and illustrates the trek of the Acadian people through their struggle & faith; the second phase continues from 1900 to 1949 (this one includes the 1907 hotel). - Each house has a colorful interpreter who is quite willing to share the history of the house and the story of a tenacious people; some of whom were deported in 1755 to various parts of the world including Louisiana (these to become the Cajuns).

We were able to locate some ancestor history through some valuable books (for sale) in the entrance pavilion. - We enjoyed our stay but it was too short. Our next visit will be for several days of pure relaxation & enjoyment..

Room Tip: Ask for a corner suite, front facing, with a private bath.. These are large and have lots of window...

From the ride from the parking lot to the hotel in a 1930's Model A Ford to the piano playing in the lobby this hotel surpassed what we thought we'd get. Although we did not have a bathroom in our room it was only a few doors down and only we had the key for it. It had a claw foot tub and an old fashioned toilet with a pull chain to flush it. The room and bathroom were very clean and the staff was more than helpful. We'll definitely be staying there again.

The hotel itself is charming, clean, well decorated, peaceful. Being able to walk around the restored village was also fun. We did the dinner show. There were three musicians: keyboard, violin, and guitar.(sometimes accordian). They were AWESOME! The show was about violin styles around the world, and the musicians are multi-talented and versatile. The food was among the worst I have ever had. They told us the choice was salmon or pork. The printed menu said salmon or fettucine chicken alfredo. Both were covered in an inedible white sauce.

On a month long driving tour of Eastern Canada we stopped at Caraquet, New Brunswick, lured in by the signs advertising the historic Acadian Village. This is a very well conceived historical recontstruction/restoration of a variety of heritage buildings. The grounds are lovely and peaceful, and the interpreters are full of information and eager to answer questions.

We were quite surprised to stumble upon a meticulously restored turn of the 20th century hotel on the property. When we found out that it was possible to rent rooms there and stay on the property overnight, we jumped at the chance. Our package included a ride in a vintage Model T to retrieve our luggage from our car outside the grounds in the main parking lot. After checking in, we were led to our absolutely charming corner room, featuring windows covered by billowing lace curtains blowing in the breeze, overlooking the peaceful grounds. The furnishings were 100% authentic, but were immaculately restored. The bathroom was very large, and featured a vintage clawfoot tub ("showering" was a challenge, but fun nonetheless) and a high-tank pull-chain toilet. It was one of the most memorable and pleasant nights of our vacation.

Our package also included dinner and an authentic Acadian show in the main dining room. Although the entertainment was entirely in French (and we are not exactly bilingual), we still had a lot of fun. It was a real treat to have a late night drink on the second floor verandah overlooking the grounds, and then go for a moonlit stroll along the pathways, having the entire site to ourselves. It really was a magical experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a fondness for the past.
