“Nice upscale dining experience”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

Java Jacks has a nice dining room upstairs with an interesting menu. The atmosphere was a little upscale...which is what I wanted that night. Although initially alone, I bumped I to travellers like me who were going or coming from places on my list...we ended up moving some tables together to share our tales of Labrador, Gros Moren, and Fogo Island...which resulted in us all drinking a little more wine than we expected...but it was worth it..

“A local standout”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Eating well is not always easy in outport Newfoundland. For many dining establishments a deep fryer is their weapon of choice, especially when cooking what should be the island’s signature cuisine – seafood. In contrast to most of its competitors, Java Jacks has volubly eschewed this apparatus and offers up interesting and well prepared meals with a modest but thoughtful wine list. The service was friendly and efficient and the prices answer to what is offered. They are very soon closing for the season but should be on your must-go list for 2014 when visiting Gros Morne and not just because there is not a whole lot of other good eateries to choose from.

“Arrogant staff, wouldbe diners put down”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

We did not eat there. We were completely put off by the unjustified arrogance of the staff who seemed to try to con potential guests into thinking that it is a highly popular restaurant. They did this by refusing to take reservations, but even if you arrived exactly at their announced opening time you were gleefully told that the restaurant is completely full and there will be at least a 45 minute wait. This enforced wait is not reasonable for a small village restaurant when you are on vacation.

“did the job”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

Not many options in Rocky Harbor. Went here after our hike in Gros Morne and chose because of the reviews. In all, it fed us. The soup was pretty good, chowder was okay. We had a chicken wrap which was a bit dry. The muffins were pretty good.

What kinda soured our experience though was getting charged an extra few dollars. We asked for a receipt and was given a manual filled receipt. Being pretty fatigued from our hike, didn't realize till getting back to our motel that we had been overcharged. Had a few instances of this happen on the trip but in all no great harm done. Still, nothing you wish to experience.

In general, always good to be paying attention when you are getting rung up anywhere you go

“Coffee, muffins and wraps”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

Was a popular take-out place for locals. Offered fresher fare than the classic Fish 'n Chips options that abounded. Coffee was good and muffin was fine.
