“Great motel in beautiful location”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

The motel is in an excellent situation right next to the shore of St. Ann's Bay. Conveniently located at the junction of the Trans Canada Highway 105 & the 11 Cabot Trail, it's quiet and well away from the road, yet in a most convenient location for exploring and making it a base.

I was there in late June for a night, but unexpectedly returned for another night in July when my plans changed last minute and I needed to be at the Gaelic College nearby, a testament to the motel that I chose to return to the same accommodation.

It's a family run property with Doug & Christine who are the most excellent of hosts, always happy to oblige with any request, along with great humour. They are dedicated to their guests and the property, their care and enthusiasm shows in the presentation of the grounds, exterior of the building and the rooms too.

Both rooms I stayed in were spacious and well equipped with fridge, hot beverage items, and good sized beds. The bathroom was well presented and everything throughout was spotlessly clean. There's good working space on the desk with a chair, with a light and power points. An additional chair to sit and look out of the window, although you can do that lying in bed too !

The view from all rooms is to the bay, just yards away from your window, it's worth the stay just for that alone! A bonus is when the eagle comes and perches right outside your window, as in the picture I took from inside the room.

The owners live in a detached property between the main block and reception, so always have their eye on things and available for any help or advice. Free wi-fi is available throughout. There's a restaurant next door, and as there's the owners property and reception between the two there's no noise from there either.

It's just 1km from the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts, which is certainly a place to visit, with its exhibition of how folks from overseas came to live there,m as well as craft shop and many activities too.

You couldn't wish for a better better hosts in a well managed property in a fantastic location.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the bay, those furthest from the reception end will be have least least noi...

This is a very nice roadside motel that is convenient to the fabulous Cabot Trail. Our room had a queen bed, fridge, good satellite TV coverage, good WIFI, coffee pot, and a picture window overlooking the water. It was very clean, well decorated and quiet despite being right next to the road. The main thing that sets this apart from similar lodgings is the owners who are absolutely wonderful, fun people who will go out of their way to make sure your visit is perfect.

We stayed at the St. Ann's Motel this past summer, it was our resting point as we visited Cape Bretton Island and the Cabot Trail. We looked forward to either our morning or early evening discussions with Douglas the innkeeper...he provided us with tips on local restaurants and activities. We were happy with the Motel's location, as it is one of the many gateways to the Cabot Trail and we found it suitably located for our visits to Baddeck, Ingonish and the Gaelic College of Arts and Crafts. Although at the cross roads of the Cabot Trail and the TransCanada Highway, we did not find the road noise to be disturbing, we in fact were awakened by the sounds of the local birds, and not the passing vehicles. And, of course, the morning visit of the bald eagle right outside our window, an impressive local attraction.

Saw a bald eagle before we got the key in the door which the owner came over and pointed out. The owner, Doug, was extremely friendly and helpful. Room was perfect and there is a restaurant next door with great food at reasonable prices. The view from the room was one of the best I've ever experienced.

As we drove Cape Breton's Cabot Trail (starting at Baddeck and then taking several days to drive counterclockwise around the island), our motel experiences were a bit hit-or-miss. But St. Ann's Motel was definitely one of the hits! What a spectacular view of St. Ann's Bay. And then the bald eagles and other wildlife in the area make this place very special. With the Lobster Galley Restaurant (where we ate dinner and then breakfast the next morning) within easy walking distance right next door, St. Ann's Motel is a great place to stay at the start of the Cabot Trail's eastern loop.

I love bald eagles, and while none dropped down directly in front of our picture window, we did spot one perched in a nearby snag that evening, and then more the next morning. They were waiting for the fishermen, who were fishing nearby off a point along the shore, to filet their catches, leaving scraps behind for the eagles, seagulls and crows to scoop up.

The room, itself, is simple. Very important to us is the bed, which was firm and provided us with a good night's sleep. Our room had a great shower curtain (featuring cartoon ducks) that previous guests described as "best shower curtain in the world" in the guest book. Other visitors must have been even more fortunate than we, because they described their eagle visits in glowing terms. I'm hoping that meant they saw eagles perched right outside the picture window on the driftwood outside ... just as the framed picture in our room promised. We didn't get that this time around ... so we'll just have to go back!

Room Tip: We were in No. 8, which is closer to the highway. (The highway is noisy until nighttime, when traffi...

We read about this motel on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. The room was simple and clean and the big picture window provided a spectacular view of the lake. our host was very courteous. Perfect for our one night stay as we looped through Cape Breton. One thing of note - it is just off the main road where trucks will pass through. But if you spend the day hiking and are are exhausted like we are, you may not care.

We have stayed in countless non-chain motels throughout the US and Canada and this is in the top 5% of all accommodations. The motel has more of a bed and breakfast feel with the way the rooms are furnished and maintained. The owner/operators are friendly and courteous. We have extended our stay in this area so that we can stay here longer.

This is a real find!
