“A good stay at a beautiful location”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

The main strength of the Castlerock Inn is it's beautiful location with great views over the coast and bay. The Inn and it's rooms are tastefully decorated, the rooms were perfectly clean. We received great advice on attractions and activities there.
We stayed there for two nights and had a reservation for a room on the Cabot Trail side of the hotel. The hotel staff took the initiative to find a seaside room, which we could take for the first night of our stay. Great views
We stayed with four in a room, the quality of the fold-out bed was not like the other beds however. Breakfast was basic (described as continental) but ok.

Stayed one night as a stop over to the NL ferry and a tour on bike of the Cabot Trail. First of all we booked online and was confirmed a queen size room with ocean view, well when we checked in our ocean view was a room down in the basement with a window underneath the back deck that we could try to peek out off to see a bit of the ocean. Bed was comfortable and room was clean but noisy we could hear everything going on upstairs. The evening meal we had in the dining room was way overpriced and "gourmet" as advertised is a joke. The lady who served us in the dining room was very friendly, reserved us the best table in the dining room and did her best to make us feel welcome and enjoy our meal. Would not stay at this Inn again.

This place has plenty of potential but fell short. It reminded me of my grandmas, clean and tidy but dated and in need of some sprucing up or pizzazz. Window in the our room had a great view but was not very big, had false glazing bars and a screen so the view wasn't as good as it could have been. Breakfast was serve yourself ordinary, disappointing after the delights at many other B&Bs.

Travelled with three buddies for golfing in Cape Breton and found the Inn's location ideal...only 10 minutes from Highlands Links. Truly spectacular views of landscape and ocean from our second floor rooms. My room was clean and recently renovated. The dinners were the best I experienced in the area, and the chowder the best anywhere. In the evenings we enjoyed drinks and the view from the deck. The staff was engaging and knowledgeable. Looking forward to returning with my family.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms facing the ocean have best views.

Beautiful setting and grounds right on the ocean and Cabot Trail. The rooms are roomy, nicely furnished, spotless, very comfortable and quiet. The ocean view from our room (#12) was spectacular. The food is EXCELLENT, and the hostess is absolutely wonderful - genuinely friendly and informative. Unlike many upscale inns in NS, our room had a/c (nice for our one really warm day), a nice sized tv, and pretty decent wifi speed.

The hotel stands on its own at the top of a steep incline on the Cabot Trail. The views are amazing. The restaurant and outside terrace are at the rear of the building giving uninterrupted views across Ingonish Bay and beyond.
Our room, at the end of the upper floor, had two windows, which meant we had those fabulous views. It was large enough to have a very comfortable queen size bed, large sofa, table and two chairs and a cabinet housing the tea and coffee making equipment. The hotel is simply furnished and unpretentious. It is also immaculately clean.
Breakfast is a very basic buffet - hard boiled egg, sausages, yoghurt, cereal, sliced bread, blueberries. The evening meal menu was mainly seafood and fish dishes with one chicken and one steak dish. The food was good and not overpriced.
Overall the location of this hotel is superb and ideal for a one or two night stay.

Room Tip: Rear of building for panoramic views. Room 9 for side and rear views

Let me first qualify this by saying that this was essentially a one person show - from check in through our evening drinks, we had only one person helping us out (aside from 1 kitchen staff) on duty. I'm not sure if this contributed to our experience, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

Confusion began right at check in, as we had booked 2 ocean view rooms but for some reason there was an issue. It turns out all was fine, and the issue was that she "was confused by what was written". Rooms were fine - sparse but clean, and the view was really nice. Beds were soft - very comfortable for us.

The dining experience was unforgettable - and not in a good way. Sign at the entrance to Castle Rock says it's "gourmet". It simply isn't. We ordered the house white wine to start which was readily available, and then a bottle of red for our dinner. Amazingly she couldn't open it- her opener was missing and the back up was broken! We settled on the house red as there wasn't any other choice. As for the food, those that had the lobster enjoyed it. As for the "prime rib", it was ordered medium rare. What arrived at the table didn't resemble prime rib - in size, cut or color as it was cooked throughout. We let her know the steak wasn't very good, and she apologized - she was overwhelmed and may have "reheated it in the microwave". Wow. She apologized and offered to remove it from our bill. The trout that was offered had no taste whatsoever.

Again, it's worth mentioning that the effort was there. I do hope that this was a one off experience. The location of the place and the surrounding area is fantastic, and the potential could be great if the food situation is rectified.
