“Wonderful stay at historic Keltic Lodge!”
Reviewed 3 October 2012

Stayed in the main lodge with an ocean view (Sept. 30 - Oct. 3, 2012) Lovely room, loved the 'vintage' feel of this historic resort & room, yet with modern amenities. The king size bed was very comfortable! Food was great in both the Purple Thistle Dining Room & Highland Sitting Room. Breakfast buffet was included in our room rate and was also excellent with many healthy choices. Had a 90 minute massage at the on site Aveda Spa and it was reasonably priced and well worth it after the many spectacular Cabot Trail hikes!!
One small suggestion re room configuration.....if possible flat screen TV should be in front of the bed versus to the side of it.
Overall a wonderful resort and area to visit - would highly recommend it to family & friends.

We stayed one night in the newer section, away from the main lodge. I would agree with some of the reviewers who have said that the rooms weren't particularly full of atmosphere and could use some updating. However the bed, the bed! We've travelled quite a bit this year and this king sized bed took first prize. The prices are on the high side to be sure, but considering the setting and the history of the hotel (and the bed) we felt it to be money well spent. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in the dining room. The dishes were plated beautifully and cooked to perfection. The entertainment in the bar afterwards was good fun. Breakfast was buffet style with lots of variety and nicely presented, though I found the coffee a bit bland and think it would have been nice to have a cappucino option. We walked out to the point and took in the views. We couldn't have asked for more really considering that the summer season is over. A couple of things were closed, the outdoor pool and the Atlantic Grill, but given the time of year we were more than satisfied with our stay. It's a very special place.

It's hard to describe the Keltic Lodge and surrounding area without sounding like a shill for the place. First, it's located in one of the nicest parts of Cape Breton Island, which itself is one of the more extraordinary places we have ever been. The resort is located within the national park, on a peninsula that is extraordinary. The Lodge itself is gracious even if some of the rooms are a bit small. If you prefer you can stay in one of their cottages or the newer parts of the resort that have larger rooms (particularly, larger bathrooms with much more shelf space) but cannot match the charm of the main building.

We found the food consistently excellent, well beyond what we had expected. There is music (generally good singers who perform Celtic music, which we love) on many nights, and a wonderful bar in which that music is played that is set up to make it easy to meet other people who have found their way to this relatively remote place. There is a beach that allows for lots of water-oriented activities, and wonderful hiking trails that take you out to where the cliffs meet the ocean (and where you approach the ocean's edge at your own risk since there are colonies of gulls that have settled there and are quite protective of their young). There's also the second-best golf course in Canada, a very good one indeed, right down the road in walking distance from the Lodge.

The staffs at both the Lodge, the beach and the golf course could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. This place is Canada at its best, and it attracts many Canadians who know that Cape Breton is a special place. When combined with a trip along the famous Cabot Trail (which starts just north of the resort and is one of the more extraordinary drives through beautiful settings in the entire world) you could mistake this place, at least during the summer, for paradise. I really cannot praise it highly enough.

Room Tip: Get a room on the ocean or cove sides, and ask for "newer" rooms if you are concerned abou...

As the foggy skies cleared we found ourselves at the Keltic Lodge! On clear days one can see
the Keltic Lodge from miles away.

We were greeted by a very friendly fellow who was helpful in explaining the Lodge and the Inn. Our rooms were at the Inn with large renovated rooms. Unfortunately, rooms with a view of the ocean were not available during our stay. The Inn has a lovely entrance a fireplace with a pool table that is nice to have if interested. One should note there is not an elevator so you are climbing stairs with your bags as there is no assistance with luggage.

The first evening we had dinner in the Highland Sitting Room. It is a limited menu but one is able to find a nice selection of items. Our service and our food was good. Our light meal of a hamburger was very good and the Celtic entertainment was enjoyable.

The next morning we had a very nice buffet which was included in our room rate. Wonderful fresh food items, muffins (blueberry) were delicious and freshly made. The eggs benedict, two kinds one with ham another vegetarian with tomato, were perfectly prepared, fresh fruit salad, different rolls and breads, sausage, bacon, baked beans, cereals and all the coffee you want to drink.

We enjoyed a lovely day at the Cape Breton Highland Golf Links. The course is lush grass with picturesque views along the way. A cart is certainly advisable if you are new to the course as some of the distances are long to the next hole.

Dinner on the second evening was at the Purple Thistle Room - reservations are recommended.
Our dinner was just okay nothing outstanding about it. My husband had the fish cakes he mentioned they tasted more of potatoes then of fish; presented very well. The main course was a rib eye with wasabi mashed potatoes, mushrooms and onions. The beef certainly isn't Alberta Beef it was described as "okay". The second dinner was a beet salad that I was so looking forward to but was very surprised that this $11 salad arrived with 3 slices of beets, 2 small tomato grapes, 2 tubular pieces of beet, a croquette (tiny) of goat cheese, with 3 lettuce leaves, drops of a very tasty dressing, flower petals. The main course was baked Halibut with a pureed pepper on top. Along with small asparagus, puree of rositi potato. The Halibut was palm size but it did not have any seasoning, the fish was mushy texture. Over all the dinner was very expensive for
the quality.

Staying in the Inn leaves you somewhat detached from the ambience of the main lodge. On the cold rainy days it would have been nice to have had a fire in the fireplace. A nice tray of coffee and muffins to great us from our hikes would have been nice in the foyer of the Inn. I realize it is the end of the season but as long as their are paying customers the attention and customer service should still be up held.

The lodge consists of a main building which appears very historic and lots of lodges placed within the grounds. We stayed in one of the lodges. They were very picturesque and comfortable. We stayed in summer and the air conditioning was good. I 'wouldn't recommend staying in the lodges if you were in any way unfirt as there are steps and its a bit of a walk to the main lodge which has the resturant and bar. We ate in the restaurant and also had a drink in the bar and we would recommend them both.

It is, however, the scenary which is this property's main attraction. set on a headland overlooking Ingonish Beach. Would happily recommend staying here.

Beautiful location but very average accommodations. Excellent Aveda spa on the grounds where one can have manicures/pedicures, massages etc. One can also spend time in the whirlpool and sauna at a daily rate. Probably a good location if one is into golf and kayaking, but I was into neither. The lodge has an outdoor swimming pool and one can walk or drive to the Ingonish Beach which is spectacular. I did not eat dinner in the restaurant because they said reservations were required. However, one can get light meals in the Sitting Room and there is entertainment every night from 7 to 11. I found some of the staff outstanding and others inhospitable, so the service was uneven at best.

Room Tip: I don't know what the rooms in the lodge itself are like. The rooms in the separate units are pr...

have stayed here before and always enjoyed it immensely. This time, we were disappointed as it looks like a very old property that needs constant updating and is not getting it. we shared a cabin with another couple and it was ok but certainly not worth the very high price. It was not good value. the breakfast buffet was fine but again not the quality that we expected. we had a most horrible experience in one of the restaurants and for that reason alone, will not be going back to this place. Did play Highland Links golf course and really enjoyed it.
