“Cannot beat this magical setting!”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

Stayed over here one night during a hiking weekend. Were excited to splurge on this historical and lovely resort. Stayed in the Inn which is a short walk from the main lodge. Inn was fine-large rooms comfy beds and nice views from second floor. Felt a little tired (eg the ice machine had a 'handyman special' switch where the original switch was, our toilet ran unless handle was jiggled, and the coffee maker didn't work) but it didn't negatively impact our experience.
Enjoyed a massage in the Aveda spa which was small but fantastic. The outdoor whirlpool was showing its age (tape holding the cover together) but the staff, treatment and the locker rooms(with steam showers, jacuzzi, sauna) were great.
Lunched in the pub while taking in the spectacular ocean views. Best burger my husband had ever had. Dined in the Purple Thistle dining room-It was very bright and felt like it needed work on the ambiance. However the service was amazing and we loved our amazing table overlooking the ocean-cant beat this view. Food was very good and the portions were modest. Left us room for dessert in the pub where a charming musician played traditional and fun songs to which we all sang along. Very engaging of the audience.
Hiked the Middlehead trail before breakfast and enjoyed the spectacular views with seals, bald eagles and other birds looking on. Earned our hearty breakfast, which was included in the room rate.

We will be back with our teens. Would be nervous on this hike with small children.

Room Tip: Cottages looked very cute -would like to try them next time provided we could book out the whole cot...

The Keltic Lodge is a"sister property" to the Digby Pines, which gave us high expectations as we drove there. Unfortunately, it does not compare favorably, and it costs $100 per night more!

As with every place we visited in Canada, the people (desk clerks, room attendants, waiters, etc.) went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful. The room was such a disappointment, though. It was quite large, with a nice, large bath, but had the ambiance of a highway-side-chain inn, and was very noisy. We could hear every footstep of the people in the room above us. Even though we had a nice porch right outside our window overlooking the bay, there was no door with which to access it. In order to sit on your porch, you had to go out the front door, around the side of the building, and finally, when you reached your porch, there were no chairs, anyway. There was no patio at the main building on which to enjoy a cocktail while marveling at the view.

We stayed two nights, ate lovely breakfasts each morning and one dinner. The food was good, but rather expensive.

The grounds are magnificent, however. There is a marvelous hiking trail out to the tip of the peninsula on which it stands.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs!

Stayed at Keltic Lodge one night as we started our Cabot Trail excursion. Lovely location and the hike from the Lodge was beautiful (well worth doing). The main building was very charming and the cabins looked nice.We were not in the main lodge but in a lodge just down the hill from it beside the spa. $15 extra fee to use the whirlpool etc. Feel the room was decidedly overpriced for what it was. The building was very tired, but we had lots of room for 4 of us and the beds were comfortable and the room clean. Fantastic views from the 2nd floor. Restaurant across from our building was closed for the season (end of Sept), so we ate lunch in the pub/lounge in the main lodge. Food was ok, but again overpriced. Did not eat dinner in the restaurant ($$$) instead went to a smaller local pub which was a taste of Cape Breton hospitality. Breakfast buffet looked like it was ok but most choices were empty when we got there so we were limited as to what we could have. Breakfast cost, which was included in our room rate was $16...our daughter only had a bowl of cereal so again a bit pricey for what it was. Gorgeous sunrise would be nice to see from the end of the trail if you like an early morning stroll through the woods. Appears to be a stopping spot for tour buses. Great location if wanting to do some of the local hikes. Franey trailhead is close by just up the road and was spectacular at the top and the beaches close as well. Overall a nice place to stay, a little pricey for what it is but clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: If staying in the lower lodge building ask for a second floor room overlooking the bay for good view...

the location is remarkable, the rooms comfortable(if a little tired) and the staff efficient and charming. This is a great resort, but perhaps beginning to show it's age a little. However it was very full and there are no real complaints.

The dining room service was most professional, but i did feel that as far as the food was concerned at dinner, presentation was a bit ahead of quality. To be fair it was very busy, and the buffet at breakfast was excellent

It helped that on the way through the Cabot Trail I was proposed to, but we LOVED the Keltic Lodge! It was along our journey so we didnt have to detour to find somewhere to stay, but paying to park there (above) your pricey cost of staying 1 night was not so great. For a nice place its an average cost I guess, but with the Highland national park (which the lodge is in the middle of) we also had to buy a parking pass for one night which they did not mention to us at the desk or when we called to make a reservation. We are not golfers, but it looked like those who are were having a good time. I would say get the buffett for supper as the restaurant is too pricy for the amount of food you get. Breakfast there was AWESOME! There is a well kept pool. but more importantly there is a beach 2 minutes down the road that was gorgeous. For most of the drive to the lodge you can see it from the road as it is so big. And there are a variety of ways to stay there for all price ranges. we were in the main building so its more expensive then ina cabin etc.

We recently spent two days at the Keltic Lodge as our base for exploring the Cabot Trail. The location is fabulous with amazing views. The lodge property is now owned and operated by the Province which we assume was due to financial issues. We stayed at the main lodge which appears to have been recently updated. The staff was excellent and very attentive. The lounge was pleasant with music in the evening and a nice bar menue. The large dining room is impressive but not so the food which was just OK. For breakfast there is only a buffet and quite commercial at that. Absolutely nothing special there. At dinner I had Halibut with mushrooms. The mushrooms were so bitter as to be inedible. The server said that was the way they were supposed to be! Our biggest complaint was that the rooms are not sufficiently, or at all, sound-proofed. We had a lovely suite. We could hear normal conversation from above and laterally. Beware of booking when they have a large wedding party unless you like to celebrate with them into the night! Our second dinner was at a restaurant at Ingonish Beach. Better than the hotel and much more reasonable. In summary, we had fun but could have been much more comfortable. The physical plant still needs work to be world, or even Province, class.

Room Tip: Suites nice. For quiet rest, look elsewhere.

We've been to Keltic Lodge before & decided to come back to celebrate a special anniversary. Why ? Because we love Cape Breton but also because of Keltic Lodge. The food is superb, the rooms old fashioned ( that is a good thing) but mostly because the staff are so dedicated to ensuring every guest is welcomed, makes them feel like they matter & just generally go out of their way to provide superior service & client experience . Just superb overall ..and of course the scenery isn't too bad either. Definitely a must do '
