“Beautiful retreat in the Margaree Valley!”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Our group of eight spent three nights at Big Intervale. The location is in a pretty valley along the river and feels very quiet and retreated. The rooms are clean and bright each with a small bathroom. We had wifi but no cell service while there but that was probably a good thing! The owners, Ruth and Hermann, are welcoming and so helpful in giving suggestions and guidance on things to do and how to get around the area. It seems that in Cape Breton everyone seems to know everyone else and can give great advice. The breakfasts were wonderful and relaxed and the one dinner we had there was one of the best on our trip. Be prepared for a bit of a drive off the Cabot Trail but it is totally worth it!

We enjoyed an absolutely phenomenal stay at Big Intervale Fishing Lodge. We couldn't have imagined a better vacation. We booked the 2-night salmon fishing package and my husband was lucky enough to have caught a 15 pound salmon. Hermann and Ruth are brimming with hospitality and make sure you are made to feel as one of the family. The food is outstanding...the herbed steak, garlic soup and fisherman's breakfast will not be forgotten.
The location is heaven on earth...complete solitude and serenity surrounded by vast mountain views with a waterfall.
We are already starting to make plans to go back next year.

Room Tip: Rooms are basic but have everything you could need for a pleasant, quiet stay.

We stopped in for dinner during a recent salmon fishing expedition, we asked one of our group to go in to inquire about a table. At the time there was only 1 out of 10 tables occupied and we were told that they were full and could not serve us. We accepted that, and moved on to a nearby establishment. We related our experience to the owners and he informed us that because some members of our party were from the Mik'maq community, they would not serve us. Later that day we had another encounter with the owner of the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge, where he accused us of illegal fishing and berated our chief and was very belligerent. It was very unsettling to learn that this sort of behaviour is still occurring and that we would be treated in this way due to the race of some of our group. Just a heads up to anyone non-Caucasian hoping to enjoy dinner here.

This is the place to stay for fishing on the Margaree River or just visiting this area. Ruth and Herman are the best hosts you will ever find. The rooms are very clean and have everything needed for your trip. You are in a valley and beside the river. Great place.

My son and I spent the weekend at the lodge using their "discover fly fishing package" and we had a great time from the moment we arrived. Access is by way of a 16km dirt road. Don't use Google maps as it is wrong. Ask for directions from the lodge. The main lodge is bright and modern with a lounge area, small bar and a great dining room. We found that people drive there just for the food. Our favourite was their steak. The cabins themselves are duplexes, clean and simple with satellite TV, electric heat and a smallish bathroom. They have three cabins for a total of six rooms. Your hosts are Ruth and Hermann and their hospitality is first rate. The fishing guide provided by the lodge was very good, enthusiastic, and knew where the fish were. It is quite stimulating to fish pools where you can actually see fish!

Room Tip: Book early. There are not many rooms.

We arrived very late on our first night to this lodge in the dark and wondered if we would ever get there on the dark , bumpy road. I will just say that it is worth the drive back for this quaint, hospitable place. We were greeted by Herman who offered us a beer and showed us to our cabin/duplex. The accomodations are not luxurious but very clean and roomy. The grounds are beautiful and you can sit on your porch and hear the river running past while reading a book or sit by a fire pit provided by the hosts. We were not bothered by noise from the adjoining duplex. The food was wonderful and plentiful. We had 5 breakfasts ( Awesome French toast) and one dinner.
We are experienced flyfisherman and did not plan on this being a "fishing trip" but did take a day to practice about 1000 casts to salmon who were not at all interested in anything we had to show them..but it was August and the day and river were beautiful. Go back in spring and fall I am told.
The best part of this place is the hosts. Ruth had a wonderful knowledge of area" goings on " and put us on to some wonderful ceilehs ( local Breton/Scottish music) and other local attractions. You are right off the Cabot Trail here and we were able to easily daytrip to all of the places we wanted to see. I just wish we had time to see more. Should we go back to Cape Breton we would love to stay with Herman and Ruth again.

This is my all time favorite place to eat. The food is always good and lots of it. The owners go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your time there. The atmosphere is so cozy, especially during the fall and winter. They make the best wings and steak EVER!!!, My husband loves their scallops you get about 9 huge ones served with a creamy sauce.
