The Big Intervale Fishing Lodge in the beautiful Margaree Valley in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia is a favorite spot for fishers and snowmobilers, but it is also has a very good restaurant. We weren't staying at the lodge, but were looking for a place for dinner in the Margaree Valley area. The Big Intervale Lodge was recommended by several local people, though they made it clear that it is waaay off the beaten path in the middle of nowhere. It was worth the 16km drive down a bumpy dirt road to be fed so well by the proprietors, Hermann & Ruth Schneeberger, a Swiss couple who bought the lodge 17 years ago. We ate succulent scallops and tender steak, done to perfection. I am still trying to figure out how to make the creamy garlic soup. The wine list needs some attention. Go for the drive, enjoy the remote and stunning landscape and the hospitality and good cooking. As remote as it is, it is the only restaurant open in this area during the entire year. Amazing!
