“Great Location; Very Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 12 September 2009

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable time at the Sword & Anchor. This B&B is on a rise overlooking a bay (with a local road in between). The rooms and bathrooms are fairly basic but very clean and tidy. (The bathrooms could use a light over the basin.) We made full use of the comfortable deck from where you can look down the bay. Breakfast was very good: fresh berries, cereal, croissants, bacon and eggs. And, Jane, the owner, is a delight. Also worthy of mention - we had a great dinner across the street at the Sea Shanty. We'd definitely go back to the Sword & Anchor.

My husband and I stayed at the Sword & Anchor recently for our 1st wedding anniversary. I can't think of a single bad thing to say. The building is immaculate, and well maintained. Jane was very nice, and easy to talk to and breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Great location easily accessible from Hwy 103 and scenic view out front.

While staying at the Sword and Anchor B&B we received top notch hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our home cooked breakfasts and beautiful views. Throughout our entire stay we felt very welcome and comfortable. Home away from home you might say.

I was traveling along the south shore of Nova scotia late one night and looking for a place to get a bit of sleep before continuing in the morning. Accomodations were scarce because of events going on in the area. I was told about a place called the Sword and Anchor, an Inn style bed and breakfast in Chester Basin. It is nestled at the head of the world famous Mahone Bay, kinda in a cove of its own with a great view.

I was surprised when I reached the Manager in an instant on my cell phone while zooming along on the 103 highway. I turned off at the Chester Basin exit and she met me at the door. What followed was one of the best hotel/Inn/motel experiences I have ever had. The sword and Anchor is a restored Bed and Breakfast Inn dating back to the 1800's with an interesting heritage and character all of its own. It includes 8 guestrooms with private baths and a separate Guest house. This waterfront property offers character and pleasantness of a true Country Inn.

I found the rooms and facilities absolutely spotless with personalized, exceptional service. Don't overlook this one as you visit or drive the south shore of Nova Scotia. A great place for a quick getaway or a stop along the way or even a special weekend. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. It is definitely underexposed and a very special piece of Nova Scotia surrounded by history and natural beauty not far from Mahone Bay, Bridgewater/Lunenburg and also not very far from Halifax.

  • Liked — Spotlessly clean with exceptional attention to detail and presentation
  • Disliked — I liked the whole experience
  • Tips/Secrets — Call ahead or, if using N.S. Check Inns, ask for the Sword and Anchor

The B&B is clean, and the owner tries hard. Bathrooms are updated and very clean and nice. The inn is located right on the highway so it is a bit noisy. Ask for a room in the back. The beds need to be replaced. They feel like the stuffing has been worn out of them and you are sleeping right on the springs. We tried serveral different rooms and the beds felt the same in each of them. Also, if you are visiting people in Chester, as we were, Chester Basin is a bit of a drive further south so be prepared to drive back up the highway to get to Chester.
