Our most recent visit to the Cape Breton was for Celtic Colours, and the Lighthouse Cottages are the ideal central location for much of the entertainment in the area.
We look forward to staying at the Lighthouse as you can depend on them on being clean, well equipped with all the essentials, service is first class, beautiful waterfront location.
Looking forward to visiting Cape Breton next year and staying at the Lighthouse Cottages.
Would highly recommend them to anyone travelling in the area.

We stayed in one of the Lighthouse Cottages in early October. Our cottage was extremely clean and the view of the bay and sunset was great. The rooms were so clean they looked freshly painted. The woman at the front desk--the owner I believe--was pleasant and very helpful. As it was near the end of the season and we were only using one bedroom she gave us a discount. When we asked about the laundry and how to buy soap, she offered it to us. The laundry is attached to the office and while I I was in there she politely knocked and waited for me to invite her in. She wanted to make sure I was able to note the fantastic sunset and we spent about 30 minutes talking about life in the area. The next morning was cold and blustery so we only walked briefly on the beach but in nicer weather we would have spent longer. Clearly our experience was very different than some of the reviews below. Yes, the furnishings are a bit dated, but I would expect that in a cabin. Yes, there are some posted guides and rules but most deal with common practice (recycle, avoid using bath towels for swimming). We had no problems with hot water. I agree that these cottages would be good for family vacations.

We stayed here for a few days in September and we had a great experience. The cottages were very clean, beds were comfortable and we had lots of space. Our cottage had two bedrooms, full kitchen with a good size living room and bathroom.

You can't beat the location. The cottages are a 5 minute drive from a grocery store. And are located above a beautiful beach and boardwalk which is well taken care of.

The area is stunning! Make sure you take the time to drive around to the surrounding areas, lots to see and do with local music and festivals.

These cottages would be perfect for a family get away.

The view is spectacular. We would of been ok except for the fact that there was no hot water
for a bath or shower and the water was brown. There was no attendant available to help with
this issue. We were not comfortable there, but only had to stay for one night.

Room Tip: I would suggest researching the local B&B's in the area.

Thank you for your comment. This is extremely unfortunate and we have never had this problem before. There is a phone number to contact if an attendant is not available after hours. Please accept our apologies and we hope you'll consider visiting us again.

We recently went for a wedding- and we were warned that the owner had some weird "rules" for absolutely everything. We dealt with her rules- but one that really bothered us was you can be a family of 8...but you cannot bet 2 couples with 2 babies for 1 cottage- thats different. These are 2 bedroom 2 double beds + pull out couch cottages with kitchen and separate bathroom...but she rents each cottage out the way a hotel would a room- Not a cottage. We were confirmed for our cottage for a wedding for 2 nights. Friends of ours were coming down with their wee one and could only get a cottage for 1 of the 2 nights. We didnt think anything of it as we had to room in our COTTAGE and told them they could bunk with us as all the other cottages were booked solid and our friends were willing to pay customers who simply needed an extra night- thinking that if we informed the owner this would be fine- even if offering her to PAY the difference for an extra night for this couple and their baby to stay in our cottage with us in the empty room- Nope. She gave us an ear full of guff. It was like pulling teeth. END OF THE WORLD. 30 mins + of chatting with someone who felt offended that we assumed that this very normal assumption based on COTTAGE STAYS ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET was acceptable. Especially when you have honest people coming to you and telling you the situation, and asking and offering to PAY. So after a big looooong discussion, this was settled and our friends and their baby could stay in the spare room in our cottage which would have otherwise been completely empty. So be warned if expecting to travel with people outside of your "family"- or seriously, tell her your friend is your sister or something. She can't accept renting her cottages like cottages. Babies, no babies- quiet families... doesn't matter. Be warned.

The website is dated needs more information on it. Worst is if you take the time to talk to the owner- she'll give you guff. She's not easy to talk to, AT ALL. You're best to keep your mouth shut instead of taking the time to talk to her- she's not worth the time, or the headache. Website might say something, another travel brochure might say another, she'll say something else. Having said this, despite her, her staff is REALLY nice!
Overall place is very dated- very basic and simple for the price of a place ran like a hotel room in a rural area. It was very clean. Location was nice, however no restaurants nearby- You need to drive to Mabou (which is absolutely stunning and worth driving around if you get the chance) Needless to say, we personally will not be staying here anymore- that experience left a sour taste in our mouth, tried to do the right thing and ended being treated like ill intended people.

Room Tip: Be clear from the get go on your expectations and the rules before going- that way you know what you...

We were only able to get a cottage for one night since they are always booked in advance and usually full. So happy we did. We were in # 8 and it was a 2 bedroom cottage with a full kitchen...new and full sized fridge, stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, electric kettle, teapot and dishes, cutlery and pots and pans. A full size living room with sofa, rocker and dining set. Bathroom looked fairly new also and had great shelving for toiletries. The two bedroom's were identical and each had a large dresser, closet and comfortable double bed. There was a deck overlooking the ocean with a picnic table and 2 adirondack chairs. I believe they have barbeque's if requested.
Only downside is the tv, cellphone, and wifi signal were not great but you could get a cell and wifi signal if you went outside or in the bedrooms by windows and we weren't there to watch tv anyway.
There is a path that leads down to the beautiful sandy beach. There is a liquor store, convenience store nearby and a grocery store in the town of Port Hood. Also there is a great little restaurant, the Clove and Hitch that is near by.
Would definitely go back and for a full week next time.

Thanks for your comments. This summer (2013) we added two more antennas to provide a stronger signal. All guests are receiving proper wifi signal now and it's free of charge.

These cottages are located on beautiful Port Hood beach which has some of the warmest water in the Maritimes. The grounds are well kept and the cottages are very clean but they lack a bbq or a coffee maker and there are rules posted in every room. Signs telling you how to sort your garbage but no green bin provided in the kitchen and no basket for returnables or recyclables. Furniture is good quality and comfortable but kitchen appliances are very old. Cottage number 1 is the only cottage that has any shade so if you are staying in hot weather see if that one is available. Staff is friendly but felt that
for the price I would certainly have expected to have a bbq and coffee maker provided. There is a liquor store and corner store within easy walking distance as well as a bakery and restaurant close by. Would go back again but would be better prepared for the kind
of meals that can be prepared without a bbq. These cottages have extra charges for
any extra guests which make them fairly expensive in such a rural area. This area is
10 min. away from Mabou where you can enjoy some great food and music at the Red Shoe Pub owned by members of the Rankin family.

Thank you for your comment. It is unfortunate you did not have a coffee maker, as every cottage has one. Sometimes things get moved. This must have been overlooked by the cleaning staff. Guests can come up to the office for things like this, though you shouldn't have had to, so we apologize. We do have BBQs available upon request and for an extra fee. We encourage recycling and most people use a bag to bring it up. As for compost, there is no container for that because we do not have composting facilities in Port Hood. We appreciate your feedback.
