Bear on the Lake Guesthouse
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 July 2014

I stayed at Bear on the Lake in June and I had an amazing time! Since the place is rather small you feel more like you rented an awesome place for vacation and not like you’re staying at a hostel. When you come in there’s a big common area with a spacious kitchen that offers a lot of storage room and everything you need for cooking. You also have a big table and a lounge that is more like an actual living room! There also is a little reading corner if you want to have more time for yourself.
Bear on the Lake is the best place to stay in the area because it’s so close to everything Cape Breton has to offer! It’s just 20 minutes to the beginning (or end, depends on which way you’re driving) of the Cabot trail, you easily get to a lot of really nice hikes and the impressive Egypt falls are not far away either (and there’s a lot of more things to do in the area!). If you just want to relax, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake from the hammock or relax at a small beach that is just down the street. And if you’re wondering where to get your food (I can understand you ;)): The next town is just 7km away, so you can easily get there by bike (you can rent one at the hostel) or by car! 
Now you probably already think that the place is amazing and I didn’t even write about the staff yet: Basically everyone who works there is just awesome! Carmen, the hostel owner is very nice, helpful and welcoming and so is the staff. They’re really friendly, funny and relaxed, but professional at the same time, and they really care about you! Not to mention that the place is perfectly clean! Christiane, Maryka, Anna and Paul, you did a great job!
And if you think all this is too good to be true: Well, it’s just the best hostel in the world! ;-) I was at the end of my trip and I really didn’t want to leave Bear on the Lake, so I stayed there for over two weeks! I immediately felt at home when I came in for the first time and that didn’t change. I met a lot of travelers of all ages, I found great friends and the hostel community was always like a second family for me! So if you think about booking your stay at Bear on the Lake: Do it!!! You won’t regret it and you will probably have the best time of your trip!
PS: Don’t leave the place without having played the world famous humming board game! ;-)

This is probably one of the best hostels I ever stayed at! An excellent base while doing the Cabot Trail. The guys there gave me some great information for some local hiking spots! I met some great people, thanks to Carmen, Christiane, Marie, Anna and Jesse! Make sure you bring some beers, to sit back, chill and chat and meet some follower travellers!

Four of us rented the two private rooms for two separate nights, and our stay was wonderful. Nice rooms (basic but very clean), separate common area with own deck and good view out to the lake for the two private rooms, very friendly staff (special thanks to Christiane, the assistant manager, who was welcoming and helpful), and a good kitchen/common area, where we enjoyed talking to folks from a variety of countries. We will stay here again the next time we're visiting Cape Breton Island.

You never know what will happen in a hostel. Things can go good or bad. But our experience at Bear on the lake was superb! From the friendly welcome and make your self at hope attitude of Christiana to Carmen's in depth knowledge of the area your always close to a warm smile and a good recommendation. The place is clean and well kept with keen attention to details. Carmen always has an attentive ear to your needs or request and will do his best to make your stay as homely and comfy possible.

And you couldn't ask for a better location. And easy drive to the Cabot trail or even to mabou for a great meal at the Red Shoe pub with some live Celtic music. There's even a well stocked (for the middle of the countryside) grocerie store a 5 min. drive away.

Make sure you bring a smile and you shall have an experience that will last a lifetime that will make your journey threw Cape Breton all the more enjoyable. You're sure to get a taste of the Cape Breton hospitality with an international twist at Bear on the lake!

We stayed one night on our way to Ignonish. The hostel was nice, as hostels go. Our room was fairly clean but very cramped for 4 of us. We thought we'd be sharing a bathroom with 2-3 other people- but it seemed to be many more and at times we had to wait a long time to use the bathroom. The volunteer workers from various other countries were very friendly and helpful. We cooked a meal, did laundry and relaxed. Be warned that laundry is $5 a load to wash, dry and get soap- and towels were $1 each. We paid $90 to join HI and get a private room. - this was only $10 cheaper than a very nice hotel we stayed at in St. John- so we felt the value wasn't great given the spareness of the hostel experience. Other folks were up late chatting- so our kids had a hard time falling asleep. If you are traveling with kids- ask for a private room upstairs perhaps... Main floor has the noise of cooking, socializing, etc.

Room Tip: Upstairs might be better for families- and ask for room with private bathroom

Stayed in a private room at the hostel for two nights. Staff is wonderful (great job girls), the place is really clean and the location is excellent for doing the Cabot Trail. Has everything one needs - whether you prefer the privacy of a private room (with a separate living room for the private rooms) or a cosy hostel experience with the other guests - the hostel has it all!
