I stayed at Bear on the Lake in June and I had an amazing time! Since the place is rather small you feel more like you rented an awesome place for vacation and not like you’re staying at a hostel. When you come in there’s a big common area with a spacious kitchen that offers a lot of storage room and everything you need for cooking. You also have a big table and a lounge that is more like an actual living room! There also is a little reading corner if you want to have more time for yourself.
Bear on the Lake is the best place to stay in the area because it’s so close to everything Cape Breton has to offer! It’s just 20 minutes to the beginning (or end, depends on which way you’re driving) of the Cabot trail, you easily get to a lot of really nice hikes and the impressive Egypt falls are not far away either (and there’s a lot of more things to do in the area!). If you just want to relax, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake from the hammock or relax at a small beach that is just down the street. And if you’re wondering where to get your food (I can understand you ;)): The next town is just 7km away, so you can easily get there by bike (you can rent one at the hostel) or by car!
Now you probably already think that the place is amazing and I didn’t even write about the staff yet: Basically everyone who works there is just awesome! Carmen, the hostel owner is very nice, helpful and welcoming and so is the staff. They’re really friendly, funny and relaxed, but professional at the same time, and they really care about you! Not to mention that the place is perfectly clean! Christiane, Maryka, Anna and Paul, you did a great job!
And if you think all this is too good to be true: Well, it’s just the best hostel in the world! ;-) I was at the end of my trip and I really didn’t want to leave Bear on the Lake, so I stayed there for over two weeks! I immediately felt at home when I came in for the first time and that didn’t change. I met a lot of travelers of all ages, I found great friends and the hostel community was always like a second family for me! So if you think about booking your stay at Bear on the Lake: Do it!!! You won’t regret it and you will probably have the best time of your trip!
PS: Don’t leave the place without having played the world famous humming board game! ;-)
