Lovely food and friendly atmosphere. Called in on the off-chance of a table and really enjoyed our meal.

“relaxing lunch with excellent meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

I haven't ticked this as the best meal we have "ever" had but it was really good. A 2star michelin restaurant in Cambridge has that tick from May, sorry. BUT this is way up the top there for food in East Anglia. We ( 3 of us ) were welcomed as soon as we entered and were shown to our table which has very comfortable seats ( we were'nt crippled as usual when we left hours later ) The service was pleasant and attentive. My crab and cauliflower puree was very nice and I'm not a lover of cauliflower but do like to try different food, the veal tartare met with approvel and the whitebait from light bites was no light bite quantity even to a mid 30s man.We all had the duck which was very tender served on grains with cabbage and baby turnip, a separate order for carrots at £2 was too much for the 3 of us but very tasty they were. I declined dessert but the roasted strawberries etc and the beetroot and blueberry sponge where both enjoyed.
joy of joy, no scrapping of food to another plate at the clearing of the table Thank You, thats such a killer and also no service charge added to the bill on the card machine so the good old cash under a saucer says a lot more.
We will be returning in the not too distant future ( already recommended it twice since yesterday ) and hope the menu changes regularly so customers don't get bored and even worse that the chef doesn't get bored doing the same recipes day in day out !

For 2 people, 3 courses and 1person 2 courses plus 1 G&T, 1 glass of white wine, 1bottle Malbec (£18 ) plus 2 large glasses of the same and 1 bottle of water ( guess who for ! ) £112 was NOT expensive - plus tip in cash under saucer.

Dear Dolly M,

Your review was our 100th review and I am over the moon that it was! Thank you so much for being so honest and descriptive. To be mentioned alongside somewhere so aspiring as Mid Summer house in such a positive way is not only flattering but also confidence boosting for the whole team! As you mentioned we do change our menu regularly as our talented kitchen team are always buzzing with fantastic dish ideas. It also helps that Suffolk has some amazing produce and suppliers that we promote as much as we can within our menu. We have tried to complement our fantastic food with our style of service. You are right, I quite often get frustrated when I eat out that there has been no effort made to inform the front of house staff of the food they are serving or to notice the little things such as serving the right food to the right person without having to ask "who's having the chicken". We have a small but passionate team that put their heart and soul into making the Shepherd and Dog somewhere special. Thank you for noticing. Hope to see you again soon!

“Elegant dining in a roadside pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

Having failed to get into some of the more famous restaurants in the area we took a chance on the Shepherd and Dog and were pleasantly surprised to find a stylish dining room whose muted grey walls hung with paintings contrasted nicely with the maroon of the upholstered chairs and the waiters' aprons. There is a fixed price 2 or 3 course menu for Sunday Lunch with four choices for each course. We prefer this sort of menu to those which offer endless choices and it clearly allowed them to concentrate on doing the dishes on the menu very well. Our starters included a fluffy flavourful pea and mint soup, a delicate veal tartare, with nasturtium leaves, tiny chopped chives and cornichons, mustard and mustard seeds and finally, delicious smoked fish. The portions were not enormous but quite adequate with the emphasis on flavour.

The two children in the party (Ages 11 and 9) were given what looked like reasonable kids menus but the waiter recognising the sensitivity of pre-teens suggested they might prefer to see the adult menus which went down well. They both chose an adult dish of two cuts of pork with incredibly light crackling on an apple sauce base. They did not want starters so we asked for bread for them and were told bread was included and a cake stand with 3 types of their own bread plus tiny cheese donuts was produced. This was duly refilled as required. The adult main courses also included turbot on a bed of spinach and mushroom. Again the portion was not huge but beautifully cooked and any pangs of hunger would have been assuaged by the huge bowls of crisply roasted potatoes and grilled mixed vegetables provided for the table. We had no room left for desserts.

The wine list is short and conventional but they make some interesting cocktails. The "Elderflower Collins" we tried was perfect for a hot day. Service was attentive, friendly and fast.

My impression, having read the criticisms of earlier diners, is that their feedback has been listened to and appropriate action taken. Certainly we cannot think of a local restaurant where we have had a better meal in nicer surroundings. We will certainly be going back.

Dear OldAnglian,

Thank you for such a wonderful and well thought through review. You have managed to capture our ethos of a clean and modern environment, perceptive service and exceptional food. We have tried to make everybody feel welcome and comfortable and I am happy to see that this has been noticed by the young guests you dined with. The veal tartar is new to our menu so to have some detailed feedback on the dish has made our chef very happy!

We do always take people's comments on board as without feedback we are unable to grow and develop as a business, so thank you for noticing that we have done just that!

I hope that you continue to use us and become regular customers.

Many thanks

Have had a few bar meals at the Shepherd & Dog in the last few weeks. We have always had a warm welcome and have had some lovely food. Thoroughly recommend the steak, ribs and also the cauliflower risotto. Definitely will keep going back.

Dear Steph 1408,

We enjoy seeing the same faces as it generally means we are doing something right. I'm not sure if you have been in over the past few days but we have just changed our menu. We have added a grazing menu - a little bit like tapas - lots of little dishes that come as and when they are ready to create a laid back informal style of dining. We have also added some chef pub specials such as chick pea fritters with home made baked beans, monkfish tail & caper butter and chefs new favourite malted creme brûlée with 'hopped' corn. Look forward to seeing you soon for your feedback!

Thanks again
