“Great Place!”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Stayed from 08.30 - 09.02.13 Booked Cabin 14 for me and my wife and Cabin 13 for my friends with young children. We rented the 24ft pontoon boat for some quality fishing rounds and the owner gave us the same detailed introduction which i found very helpful since i am not too keen on paying big bucks for a damaged propeller only because i don't know the shallow areas. However we enjoyed the boat. It was in top conditions and very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful with any question or request we had. The cabins are rustic but nice and also very clean. We found the place very quiet. We will come back!

Room Tip: Cabin 13 is very quiet and overlooks the entire property

This was our 2nd stay at Wolseley Lodge having visited several years earlier and after having a wonderful time we decided to come back once again this summer. Located on the picturesque Wolseley Bay at the northeastern part of the French River you could not create a more beautiful location for a lodge. Beginning with the very friendly and efficient service of owners Harold and Ingrid we could not have been more satisfied with the week long stay. We really enjoyed the American Plan as the breakfasts and dinners in the dining room were amazing and the overall service was top notch. Also, included with the American Plan are excellent boxed lunches made up and provided daily in a cooler which is a really nice touch. And most importantly, the fishing is superb as we caught all kinds of fish including walleye and bass throughout the week. We also opted to hire a local fishing guide named Ron who really made the trip memorable by showing us some secret spots on the river and cooking a fabulous shore lunch with our catch (pic attached). The cabins are very comfortable and boat docking facilities are solidly adequate even for our 17 ft boat. The combination of its wonderful food, hospitality and the beauty of the French River really makes Wolseley Lodge a special place. Consequently, after this 2nd trip we have decided to make Wolseley Lodge our destination for our annual Father & Son fishing trip. Seriously, the only bad part is we now have to wait until next year to come back!

We booked on short notice and after a 6 hour drive plus setting up our cottage and getting our boat launched we were tired, as expected.
We were very surprised to have a welcome FREE outdoor fish & chips fry by the owners for all guests! It was excellent and a great touch to set the tone for the week!

During our stay we mainly were on our boat fishing however when ever we needed something the owners and staff were right there attending to it.

We mingled with many outdoors people and fisherman - Canadian, American, young and older both men and women many of whom were longtime repeat customers.

If you are looking for a French River fishing trip with other like minded individuals this is the place for you.

The owners try hard to keep it this way.

Room Tip: This is more of a rustic Canadian lodge built around 1930ish.

This is our 3rd time visiting Wolseley Lodge for the accomodation and of course the waterway for fishing. You cannot beat the value offer here! The owners have consistently re-invested in their facility to upgrade and enhance a property that had been neglected by the previous owners. The original tiny log cabins have been retained. Why not? Most have been enlarged with sitting and kitchen areas as well as large, roomy decks c/w a barbeque. The boats and motors are great! The staff in the boathouse are conscientious and accomodating. You can expect your boat to be gassed up,clean and ready to go early in the morning.
We have booked their American Plan that included shore lunches when we wanted to stay out on the water. Breakfasts and dinners were always good.
Lucky for us, with satellite TV in the lodge, we didn't miss Stanley Cup playoff game.

We needed to get away from the busy GTA for a weekend last fall and chose the Wolseley Lodge for their competitive price on the All Inclusive rate (boat/meals) at the French River and the references we heard from Leo Stakos (Fish TV) on the Toronto Spring Show.

On arrival we meet Harold the owner and he had a long 1on1 over the fishing map with us, what was very helpful later to find the 5 Finger and Rainy Rapids. The Cabin was rustic but nice maintained and clean and had a big new deck, it has a quite large living area for a 1 bedroom cabin. Our cabin didn’t have a private campfire pit but we could use the one at the beach, great views over the Wolseley from there. At the beach is a playground as well, it must be a busy place for families during the summer.

The boat was great it had even electric start and a live well and a 25hp motor...that boat was moving...
Our first trip was to the 5 Finger Rapids, what a gorgeous trip, the scenery of the French River is amazing, and we hiked up the portage trail and discovered wonderful peaceful paradise... imagine birds chirping and the surprisingly overall quite, and then over the Rock top the sound of the rapids again....
Fishing was slow on that weekend, but we found many promising spots for the future.

The food was the good old style mom cooking, very tasty; the best was the “drunken pig”. Breakfasts: 2 or 3 eggs, omelets, all kind of meat; just as we like it.

Over all it was a great experience with the Wolseley Lodge nothing fancy, but nice and rustic. And the French River is simply the best and just a 3.5h drive from home.

P.S.
We went back this spring and were surprised by the high water in the French River; it must have been 5ft higher than in the fall. They had 4 inches of Water inside the boat house. The 5 Fingers Rapids had completely changed we couldn’t believe the amount of water coming out the cut...wow. We couldn’t all spots we found last fall, but Harold pointed out some different spots and we got some nice Pickerel, the best spot was up the Wolseley River. Service and food was good again, we will be back to our little paradise.

Room Tip: Cabin #12 has no own fire pit, but a large deck and big living/kitchen area. Cabin #9 (2nd trip) is...

We have tried a couple of lodges on the French River, but keep coming back to Wolseley Lodge, the fishing is always good and being in a bay it is quite sheltered. Like having the option of heading out on the French River or up to Wolseley River.

The cabins are basic, well equipped and not overpriced. They are a mixture of original log cabins and newer wood siding cabins. The cabins are being upgraded. Tip: book early to get the one you want. Home cooked food, shore lunches and use of BBQs made it easy for meal time to fit in with what we wanted to do and when we wanted to do it.

We explored the surrounding area by car and on foot, played a couple of rounds of golf at the nearby golf courses and sat up late into the night stargazing and feeding the campfire with logs.

Originally we came for the fish, we always catch fish when we stay here, but stayed for the atmosphere, relaxation and scenery.

I am visiting the Wolseley Lodge every second year since 2004. I do like the location because it is located at the nicest spot at the French River and it is more of a family resort than a only fishing lodge. My kids like the beach and the playground. The fishing was never disappointing for me. The Wolseley Lodge is older, but it has his charm and i can see that the owner keeps it actually in good shape. The food is very nice and the service is ok. A big plus are the rental boats with strong motors and good equipment. I try once in a while different other lodges in this area and always come back to this one because it offers just the best combination of what i am looking for. Nature, good fishing, well equipped cabins and good food. It is not the Hilton but who wants the Hilton out in the nature!?

Room Tip: Cabin 8 is newer. Cabin 13 has the best view, Cabin 16 has the largest deck and cabin 6 has the nice...
