While spending a few days in the lovely lakeside town of Southampton I had to try the fries from the legendary Gerry's. The many great reviews had me pumped as I am always looking for the best french fry ever. And the locals don't hesitate to recommend the place.
It was a lovely Sunday afternoon of excellent beach weather so the place was very busy - always a good sign. So I got in line and waited to place my order. Service was very good and the line moved along well. The order window was attended by a friendly young lad and so far all was good.
The fries, however, were somewhat of a disappointment. Good marks for being fresh cut and cooked to a nice dark brown colour. And the flavour was very good. However the inside of the fries was very soft and the outside was only mildly crunchy. One friend who joined me likened them to hot mashed potatoes. The ones in the botton of the container got quite soft and mushy by the time we ate our way to them. Now, this was my one and only time at Gerry's so maybe I caught them on a bad day. And, of course, not everyone agrees on what a great fry is. But, for me, they were definitely not among those that I consider to be the best.
