“Great hotel and super friendly staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

In town for three nights at the Holiday Inn Express for a hockey tournament. The front desk staff was excellent, making sure we knew where we were going, making several restaurant recommendations and being accommodating for our large group. Kids loved the pool area.

Updated hotel, clean rooms and decent breakfast...kids want to buy the pancake maker. Good weekend.

We were not even in town yet when the people we were to stay with lost their power during the ice storm. Our booking was made relatively early in the day when a friendly voice confirmed a) there was power and b) lots of vacancy.

That vacancy issue had changed drastically by the time we arrived for check-in. It was very busy on our arrival because of the storm; people's houses were probably getting pretty cold at this point. Despite these unusual circumstances the staff was calm as they took turns checking people in and turning others away (in person and over phone).

I was pleasantly surprised by the décor and cleanliness of the hotel lobby. Our room was large, clean and comfortable, with two queen beds. We were happy to see we had a fridge (empty - not taken up by $$ mini-bar items!) and a microwave, both very handy. We basically camped out here for a few days and it was very comfortable.

The bathroom was a nice size, and although we did not have enough towels initially for two couples, more were brought quickly at our request. In fact I should point out that we requested more towels at the front desk before heading up to our room, and the gentleman bringing them up appeared at our door before WE even got there from the elevator!

During our stay, with so many families sheltering at the hotel, the TV in the main floor common room was usually playing Treehouse for the kids. There are a couple of couches/chairs in front of the TV and the room is available all day and night; not just during breakfast - we watched the Leafs there one night.

Complimentary breakfast is provided in that same common room and many choices are available. It's a serve-yourself operation with the offerings running along two opposite walls of the room. A big hit with the kids (and me!) was the pancake machine! A pancake is pressed out at the push of a button. Pity the poor lady who didn't read the LCD screen, didn't realize her pancake was being made, and proceeded to repeatedly push the button thinking it wasn't working. 18 pancakes were served to hungry people in line behind her after she scuttled away, embarrassed. Also on the side where pancakes are served, was coffee/tea and fresh fruit. On the other side of the room, there were a couple of warmers containing an egg dish and a protein: for example, scrambled eggs and sausages, or pre-fab cheese omelettes and sausage patties. That side of the room also has breads for toasting, muffins, a selection of cold cereals, instant hot oatmeal, juices. There was also a fridge stocked with milks and yogurts.

Although the breakfast items are locked away when breakfast is not on, the room is available and the coffee/tea are left on. A word of warning - off-hours the coffee has creamers/milkers available instead of cartons and we encountered milks that had gone sour. I ended up keeping milk in the hotel room fridge and bringing the coffee up from downstairs.

There is a Swiss Chalet immediately next door and a McDonalds in the strip mall behind it. You will need a car for other restaurant options in the area.

Every time I encountered staff they were ever so friendly. One individual told me they were full (125 rooms) because of the storm and he smilingly said he was working long hours that day. This must have been a tough time for them.

Despite the constant activity in the lobby area and around the hotel in general, we had no issues with noise on the 4th floor!

There were many families - multiple generations and pets too - staying at the hotel and I'm sure the staff were run off their feet. Kudos to them for remaining professional and kind during what must have been a stressful time for many of their customers. A warm, welcoming stay like this one was exactly what we needed while inconvenienced at such a busy time of year.

Hello HGrrl!

Wow! We are so appreciative of the very detailed review you have posted on our hotel, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Vaughan. Though we wish the circumstances of your stay would be different and not a result of the ice storm, WE do value your business. Many of our own associates were also without power in their own homes, they were very aware of the circumstances are guests were experiencing during the holiday season and we wanted to make them feel as comfortable as possible considering the circumstances. When we read comments like this, we are very proud to have been able to help out others. The true meaning of hospitality is helping out others.
Our team here at the Holiday Inn Express Vaughan truly value your feedback and thank you once again for the great response.
Warm Regards,
John Caneco-General Manager

We stayed here one night on New Year's Day - even the teenagers were impressed how updated this hotel felt as soon as you walk in - probably the nicest Holiday Inn Express we've been in! The front desk was excellent; we had the exercise room, pool & hot tub to ourselves on a quiet night in January. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The breakfast had all the usual items and the staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Ice storm: Dec/13 in southern Ontario. No power for 5 days. Decided to head to a nice warm hotel but needed it to be pet friendly. Been past this hotel many times and frankly, thought it was one of those 'tired' Holiday Inns. Wrong. It's just a few years old and is decorated in a most calm and big city style. Our room had very comfy beds and pillows, good bathroom with a large vanity and storage for toiletries, a small microwave and an empty fridge (no booze or food) which was entirely for your own use. Everything very clean and well maintained. No evidence anywhere at all that pets had ever been in the place. (ie no smells or stains). A one time charge of 25. for your pet is automatic and is the 'clean up fee'. Personally, I think people who travel with their pets are usually fastidious about cleanliness and have well trained animals. Our Bouvier had never been in an elevator before and her learning about it was most entertaining. Oh yeah - never heard one meow or bark in the two nights we stayed there. This hotel is a half hour drive from Toronto Pearson Int-l airport and about 40 minutes to downtown Toronto (except during big storms of course) Our rate was reduced a bit because we are CAA members. The nightly rate included a breakfast which was quite acceptable. It took place in a large bright airy room and it was self service. But they did have fresh fruit and yogourt, pre-made omelletes, cereals, juices and coffee. This is the only food available in the hotel but there are many restaurants in the general area. The hotel also had a reasonably sized pool and gym area which was a surprise to us. The general area is fairly new and there is shopping available within about a 15 minute drive but a car is a must for this hotel. I would say it probably caters mostly to business travel.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor and found it to be nice and quiet. hotel is back from the road anyway...

My son and I were at the Ontario Soccer Centre for a series of games over the weekend of December 14-15, 2013. As there was a winter storm, and we had to be back at 7:00 the next morning we opted to stay the night. The hotel itself is well situated near major highway access and lot's of options for food and activities to help pass the time. It is quite new with clean rooms, the facilities one would expect (gym, swimming pool, hot tub, wifi). The beds suited me, I like a firm one, with the added touch of firm and soft pillows, labelled for your convenience. The staff were very friendly, helpful and diligent. Our TV stopped working at one point, not good if you are with a 13 year old in the middle of a blizzard and, once the maintenance team had deemed it irreparable, our room was changed immediately. The complimentary breakfast is superior to the usual one found in many places. I would not hesitate to stay here again. The room rates were also quite reasonable, superior accommodation to it's nearest neighbours at much the same price.

Room Tip: Higher up and away from the elevators, the hotel seems to do good business with groups in town for f...

Have stayed twice in the last two months for work and have been treated exceptionally both visits. They went above and beyond with both of my stays and I would stay there every business trip if possible! Located centrally around fast food and a quick cab ride to shopping amenities and grocery stores, banks, and restaurants! Great experience. Will stay again next time I am in town for business.

Had a great one night stay this weekend. Had a very warm welcome upon check in. Staff was very polite and helpful. Hotel lobby is nicely decorated and very clean. We had two adjoining rooms and both were very clean with comfortable beds. Poor lighting in bathroom though, wasn't helpful for doing make up in the morning. Nice soft towels for shower. There was a pool here as well, although we didn't get the chance to see it. Free breakfast wasn't bad for a continental breakfast. Lots to choose from, including a few hot items, like scrambled eggs, sausage, and a cook your own pancake station. Would definitely stay here again should I ever need a place in Vaughan to stay. Wish it was a little bit closer to the mall but it was only about 15 min drive.
