“A beautiful hilltop winery, in PE County, Canada”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

On a tour of Prince Edward County vineyards and wineries, the last one we visited was Casa Dea Estates winery. Vines surround the modern building with the reception, tasting and shop areas. A covered terrace serves as their restaurant in good weather. Since we visited in mid-October, the restaurant tables were moved inside. After tasting several Chardonays and a bubbly, we stayed to eat a lovely lunch. The Italian chef, in Canada on a visa, created meltingly delicious gnocchi, fettuccine and pizzas. We started with a green salad, which had just the right amount of perfectly balanced vinaigrette. When the mains arrived, there was very little talking. We drank the 2010 Chardonnay, which both my sister and I preferred to the 2009 Chardonnay Reserve. Very reasonably priced, so we bought several to take home.

They also have a pavilion for functions and we speculated on what a beautiful place it would be for a wedding. Definitely on our list of wineries to keep on our list for 2014, along with the ones we haven't been to last year or this.

“My opinion has improved!”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

I went here last year with a group of women. I had a good lunch there and was paying a return visit. I like that they have made the dining area less crowded, fewer gifty type things. The meal was very good. This year they have expanded the menu, they now include a soup or salad with the meal. They even had a sampler of their rose wine. I ended up buying 2 bottles of it, as well as two other bottles (the Pinot noir which I'd had the previous night at Pomodoro and one other).
Graham, our waiter, was funny, knowledgable and enhanced our experience of the place.
I do wish they would find a different solution to their fruit fly problem, though. The traps in the washrooms were a bit unappealing.

“Service means EVERYTHING”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

For a girls weekend we decided to go on a wine tour. One of our stops was Casa-Dea Estates Winery. The site was gorgeous and inviting but that mood changed the minute you walked through the door. You have to manoeuvre between a "gift shop" type setting to the back to taste your wine. This did not match the feeling of the rest of the county which has a less commercialized feeling. Once we got there the bartender gave us minimal information about the wine and pairing was done with the random crackers sitting on the bar. The server kept reminding us how many tastings we had left and after our last one he totally ignored us. We are more than happy to pay for extra but we didn't even get this chance. Needless to say poor service = no interest in purchasing their wine.

“Sorry - I grew up in Little Italy”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

I am from Ottawa and I have been visiting the county for 10 years and will retire here in 5 years. Casa Dea is a really nice setting but their kitchen needs a bit of help.

The antipasto platter contains, at best. commodity cold cuts that are Italian flavoured. If you are going to serve prosciutto - serve real prosciutto, know how to cut it, and preferably serve Italian and not Canadian prosciutto. Dill pickles? How about olives instead?

The mains - Margherita Pizza was poor. The problem with a Margherita is it is so simple and therefore so easy to ruin. Good crust, good tomato basil sauce, a few random CHUNKS of buffalo mozzarella and toss on some fresh basil near the end and a bit of green virgin olive oil. If that is what you are looking for or expect then don't order the Margherita at Casa Dea.

The other main - Tagliatelle was uninspired - basically a generic tomato sauce with chunks of ground beef. Something we could all make at home.

It isn't a bad meal but it isn't a good meal - in a word "forgettable".

“Lunch on the Patio”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

You could not ask for a nicer patio to sit and have lunch on a beautiful summers day. Two of us had pizza, one had pasta and one had the Italian sandwich. Not a complaint about the food. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and the wine was delicious. It was nice to sit and watch the wedding guest arrive. Just a very pleasant lunch.
