Owner description: By Chadsey's Cairns winery is located on a 200-year-old farm settled by James and Maria Chadsey in 1809. Fruit has been grown on the property from its earliest days, apples, later cherries and raspberries and now grapes. Entering the property you park beside the pioneer cemetery and walk back in time to the Apple House (circa 1855) Tasting Room and wine store located behind four magnificent barns that overlook Lake Ontario.Mature maples and lilacs border the Apple House vineyard and you can enjoy the bucolic splendour sampling your wine on the deck nestled into the vineyard.Eight different vinifera wines are grown here. Some of the first planted in the County, and most of them representing the first commercial offerings of fine wines from PEC in 2002 and 2003.You can rent the 5 bedroom farmhouse beside the winery any time of the year and use it as your base to explore "the County". Full descriptions of the hundred-year-old house, with rates and occupancy calendars can be accessed through the By Chadsey's Cairns facebook page.No matter the time of year there are reasons to visit the location, for Maple in the County, Countylicious, Terroir, TASTE, the Jazz Festival, Studio Touring, Pumpkinfest, Wassail or chilling in the Christmas holidays and winter solstice. Picking parties at By Chadsey's Cairns are a great way to spend an October Saturday.Vida and Richard also host concerts in the barn for their customers and friends, barn dances, readings etc.

Loved the ambience and the tour! We took 40 people on a winery tour and all felt that Chadsey's was one of the most delightful wineries in PE County.

We always make a point of stopping in when we are in PEC. We were introduced to Richard and his excellent wines during a wine tasting at the Merrill Inn in Picton. And since then have made a point of stopping by every time we are in the County, both to pick up more of his great wine as well as to stop by to say hello.

We were drawn by Charnivore (smoker lunch) and ordered ribs and weren't disappointed. Potato salad also divine. The spot is fabulous: I've never seen a barn remade into a funky lounge, complete with hay-bale sofas. Great concert venUe, looks like. The tasting area feels like an intimate gallery and Richard is ready to regale tasters with local savoir-faire. Fascinating and fun! Excellent wines.

Vida and Richard are excellent hosts and they make wonderful wines. From Chenin to Gewurtztraminer to Chardonnay to Pinot Noir (and more); I tried each one at least once, and found them all to be excellent. Take a walk around the property and explore the vineyards, the very old cemetery (found a couple of 1700's birth dates), and the cute tasting room in the old apple house.

We didn't just visit - we rented their farmhouse right on the property for a week and we had a fantastic time. Vida and Richard (and Zara and Daiva) were excellent hosts and the house was perfect for our stay - did I mention that the tasting room is about 200 paces away? The location is an easy drive from Toronto, and once you're there you are 1/2 hour from anything that you might want to see in Prince Edward County.
