Recently stayed there for a romantic getaway, stayed in the "suite", so nice. Service and food were amazing. Gorgeous scenery. Would definitely go back.

I'm a little late in writing this review.. but thought it important to share my positive experience with Shaws for anyone looking for a great place to hang their hats in PEI.

1. The staff were the friendliest I have encountered in a very long time... ~ providing a wealth of information about restaurants, entertainment, not to mention giving directions.

2. The reviews on the restaurant were right on. Absolutely delicous and worth every penny. We frequented several restaurant and Shaws definitely had the best mussels with the most delicious cream sauce ever!!.. we were four girls - one of us a former restauranteur - everyone was fully satisfied with the presentation, food and service.

3. The cottage (#23) was perfect. From what I saw, every cottage had a gorgeous view of the water. Equipped with fridge, stove, microwave and bbq.
Oh yes, beds were comfortable and bathroom had a huge jacuzzi tub. What more can you ask for!!!

4. Brackley Beach is lovely - and only a 10 to 15 min walk to the beach. If you're into lighthouses, there is one 5 mins away (by car).

5. Both Cavendish and Charlottetown are approx 15 mins away.

My only two negatives are: The restaurant did not serve a regular breakfast (ie. bacon and eggs) - rather they offered cottage guests two options - a continental type breakfast for approx. $10 or a buffet style with one or two hot items for approx. $15. Fortunately we didn't really need it as we enjoyed our own breakfast out on the deck :)

The second negative - we arrived when the jelly fish were in peak season! lol They were a little too plentiful for swimming. However, according to the locals - this year was not the norm. They suggest August is a better time for the beach.. warmer water and less jellyfish..

Last but not least, there's very nice gift store a minute away by car called "The Dunes"... definitely worth visiting. Gardens are amazing :)

I don't understand the previous reviews. We stayed in mid July for a family reunion. Our 2 bedroom cabin was immaculate and practically brand new, had hardwood floors, gorgeous wood burning fireplace, great view of the water, fantastic location on PEI. Vermont Castings bbq, new furniture inside, new lawn chairs, good linens and towels, and a well equipped kitchen. (Not an ant in sight). The staff really could not have been any nicer, or more accommodating. The food was excellent, the Sunday buffet not to be missed. The family pride of ownership is so evident in the upkeep of the freshly painted buildings and manicured gardens. We were very impressed - this is a special place and we will return. There is a review with photos in the July Canadian Living magazine where the reviewer seems to have had a similar experience to ours if you need more info.

We booked the Shaw Hotel (begrudgingly accepting the strict cancellation policy) as part of a family gathering but had to cancel three weeks before arrival due to a serious medical issue. Hotel staff advised that their $70 administration fee would apply for cancelling each of the three family reservations. So the hotel made $210 without lifting a finger. The hotel's fees are excessive. Most hotels we have ever stayed at have a policy of 72 or 48 hours notice prior to arrival to cancel without penalty. The Shaw Hotel charges a $70 cancellation fee and you forfeit the entire amount if you cancel inside 14 days. So buyer beware, unless you are absolutely 150% sure that you will use the reservation, look elsewhere for accommodations.

Just returned from a two night stay at Shaw's Hotel and Cottages where the ants met us at the door and didn't leave our side the entire stay; where we turned on the kitchen tap on day two about 3 p.m. only to see muddy water; the hot water is at a dangerous temperature and then we had no propane to bbq. My son went over to his cottage and took the tank over for us to use. We ran out before supper was cooked so had to finish it on the stove. We were not looking for the "Ritz Carleton" but when my son-in-law was changing our grandson on the bed this morning and announced there were four ants crawling across the bed that kind of was the icing on the cake. The fridge also had some kind of leak as everything was wet. Our cottage had an indoor hot tub but for hygiene reasons and the sludge along the side, no one in our party would even consider using it. The setting of the cottage was lovely and peaceful; couldn't really hear the partying next door; the decor very rustic and for the most part clean with the exception of the hot tub. The cleaning staff did come over with ant bait and traps for us but with having 3 children with us under the age of 4 it was a very big concern. The beach is wonderful but getting there is a nightmare - the mosquitos are like helicopters (this, I realize, is not something the owner can control). At check-out I was asked how things went so I proceeded to explain our stay. I was told our concerns would be passed on the owner but since nothing was written down either I was being placated or they are used to hearing the same complaints...My family still managed to have a good time but I don't think we will back.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2011

We stayed here pre-season, in June 2011. The hotel had only just opened and was not fully booked. Apparantly only half of PEI is open for the season until school's out, then come the line ups.
Anyway, we booked in for 3 nights. In retrospect, I wouldn't have booked at all at that time of year, and would probably only have stayed for 2 as it limited our travel around the island as we had to come back each night. Also there were vacancies everywhere, so we wouldn't have had a problem.
The weather was cold and very windy, so the shorts and dresses hardly made it out of the suitcase.

This establishment is full of character, and I could just imagine people in the 1930's lounging around the lawn on deckchairs!

We stayed in Cottage #10. It was definitely the best location: we were closest to the bay, and every evening, we watched the setting sun reflecting on the houses on the opposite side of the bay (it was the only time the sun came out!). We saw a magnificent rainbow, wildlife and peace and quiet.

Overall the cottage was just that - a holiday cottage, and I guess people are willing to make allowances to get that feeling. The room was adequate, the bathroom tiny with no-where to put anything. Shower nozzle was like little needles, and couldn't be adjusted. Shower curtain sucked up against you.
The heater was kindly turned on before our arrival, which made it nice and cosy. TV was very small and trying to watch the Canucks v. Boston in the finals was very frustrating! No table to play games at.
Also there was no phone or wireless internet... apparantly they have an antennae on the roof of the hotel, but it doesn't reach to all the cottages. So we had to use the computer in the lobby - not ideal, especially when they say it is available.
The Food: The dining room was wonderful... but in my opinion extremely expensive for what you get - we paid $100 for an evening meal for two, with only one glass of wine in that price. ($30 for a tenderloin steak, potato pattie & token vegetables.) The waitresses were wonderful - very friendly, willing and attentive. We only had the one evening meal, but the breakfasts were okay with lots of variety.

As it was still pre-sason and cold and windy, there was nothing to do at the hotel itself. Too cold to sit outside, the boats were not out yet, and the bay was covered in weeds.

I felt that what you pay for is the reputation of this being an old established hotel. They need to update things to the present-day without taking away the ambience of the place. I felt they charged (lodging and food) way too much for what is actually offered, although I guess if they are fully booked during the season they don't really care! (Why fix it if it ain't broke?)

We stayed at Shaw's for a week in August 2010. We started out in the hotel then moved to a small cottage. THe hotel atmosphere is great; quiet, peaceful, with a nice restaurant right on the grounds. We elected to include no meals in our plan but ate in the restaurant several times. It was really good. There were alot of families staying at the hotel and they all seemed to choose the full meal plan (2 meals a day). The fact that there were so many children running around the property did not deter at all from the experience. It was still very quiet. The highlight of our day was waking up in the morning, making a coffee, and sitting outside our cottage and reading our books peacefully. I would highly recommend this hotel as a vacation experience if you are looking for a quiet "getaway" to forget the stresses of life.
Nearby attractions include the Dunes restaurant and Art gallery, the Brackley Beach Drive-in (First drive-in experience in 20 years!) and a beautiful, quiet sandy beach in 5 minutes walking distance. We went to the beach during busy season and it was completely empty!
My only complaint about Shaws was the price. We paid $169 a night for a cottage that was pretty small, really just a room. But it was definitely worth it.
