What an amazing opportunity to enjoy Dalvay as a guest instead of just a gawker like I have been for so many years. We stayed at one of the newer cottages because of the size of our party I was traveling with and ended up deciding to enjoy a fine dining experience like the people of yesteryear would've done if they came out to visit Alexander McDonald for the summer getaway cool ocean breeze.

The staff treated us like royalties. The GM and her husband gave us a guided tour with history of the home and let us look over some of the rooms of the hotel since we were in a cabin. It felt like we had our own theatre performance with Alana's colorful explanations and obvious love of the building she was taking under her wing.

We dressed up for dinner that evening and enjoyed an amazing culinary dream meal complete with amuse bouche between plates. Syd was sweet enough to let us sample a taste of the smoked salmon that Dalvay does on location. Amazingly well done. Our waitress who was supposed to be working at Stanhope (before it burned down) was adjusting to the switch nicely with the instructions of the GM and her husband. She even picked up my friends napkin and placed it on the back of her seat so when she returned from the washroom it would be easy to grab to place back on her lap!!

After dinner we walked out to water the meteorshower on the lawn with the lake before us and listening to the ocean crashing just beyond the dunes. Truly a magical evening spent at a beautiful resort. I see many people complaining about no tv or phones in the rooms...really...do you need to watch tv when the world is set before your feet?! Enjoy the moments you're in! Make your own reality show. :)

Loved every minute and made great new memories for years to come. Not to mention the inspiration I got for new paintings!

I went here for a wedding that was very beautiful! The reception was right in front of the lake and was gorgeous. The feel of the hotel is very rustic & vintage. The staff set up the dining room very nicely. It got a bit hot in there, but in PEI it is usually very windy, so the problem was solved by just opening a window. The dining staff were also very helpful and friendly, they were very accommodating!

Dalvay was built by an American originally as a summer house (hard to believe it is so large but the Victorians were big on that). It is owned by the province but managed by a private company and they do a good job with a summer only property. The rooms in the main house are rustic but charming and there are newer built cottages around the lake as well for families. The house is amazing and an addition was built on to enlarge the dining room but the food is nothing over the top. The high tea is nice in the summer but expensive. The best thing about the Hotel is staying in the main building and wandering around the public areas if you love old buildings like I do. It's not about the room here - it's about the building and the location. Small beach across the street but everything else is a drive away. I love to go and wander around the hotel and eat there sometimes (or do high tea) but the cost is a bit much sometimes for what the rooms are like.

Room Tip: Look at their website and see the pictures of the rooms to help you decide.

We wanted to have a different experience then what we were familiar with for our anniversary, so we booked two nights at Dalvay by the Sea. As we rounded the corner of the national park and seen the inn we were in ahh; such an amazing property with a view like no other. The entrance way was breathtaking with an elegant staircase in the middle of the front foyer. Lynne at the front desk was a pleasure. She offered to show us to our 3rd floor room. Our room was very clean and the big king bed very comfortable, we even had a window seat that we enjoyed sitting on and admiring the view.
Our experience at dinner was over the top and there was not a bad seat in the whole dining room. Our server; Lindsay who seated us and gave us menus was pleasant and had a charming personality. Ashley took our order and delivered our meal. She had a smile that would light up the room. Everything was melt in your mouth delicious and the presentation and portion size of our meals was also exceptional.
We had a delightful server for breakfast; Elizabeth, and we recommend The Dalvay Breakfast dish, their home smoked bacon was the best we have ever tasted, and smoked to perfection.
During every meal all guests in the dining room were greeted by the food and beverage manager; Sid. He was very knowledgeable about the property. He introduced us to his wife Alana; the general manager who was just a delight, we were shocked to learn that these two were new to the island and to Dalvay.
Having no access to TVs or phones in the rooms made for a great experience to slow down and enjoy each other as well as the sounds and sights that Dalvay has to offer.
I would recommend this charming property to any couple young or old that needs time away or just a romantic getaway.
Hats off to all of the staff at Dalvay, a job well done!

I stayed at Dalvay twice: once in 1972 and again in 1973.
At that time, the place was run by a French couple (husband and wife from Lyons and Geneva).
The price was (drum roll, please!) $17/day --- and that INCLUDED three meals a day.
The food then was excellent. The rooms were old-fashioned but comfortable. No TV or radio, and that was long before there was any such thing as the Internet.
It's obvious that times have changed. The price now seems to be 15 times as much, and doesn't include meals. No TV, radio, or Internet in this day and age is simply absurd.
Back in those far-off days, the service was excellent. From what I read in these recent reviews, that does not seem to be the case now.
The main drawback then --- and still --- is the remote location. No way to get there except by private car. (A taxi from Charlottetown would cost $$$$!)

Thank you for your recent comments regarding Dalvay By The Sea. We believe that Dalvay is the ideal location to disconnect and unwind from the stresses of the world, and though, indeed, there are no telephones in our accommodations, we do offer complimentary wi-fi throughout the resort, along with televisions in our cottages for those who desire to stay connected.
As the new General Manager, I am personally overseeing the training of our staff, both returning and new, so as to ensure the level of service for which Dalvay is known. We are excited about the coming season and look forward to welcoming old and new visitors alike. We hope that you will try Dalvay By The Sea again.

We discovered the Dalvay several years ago and really looked forward to returning for a stay at this beautiful place. What a disappointment. Our $225 room was tiny and outdated with trash in the wastebasket from the previous guests. There was only one night table/reading light, a big minus for those of us who enjoy reading in bed at night, and no phone or intercom to connect us to the front desk. But the biggest disappointment was the staff/service. The young man who checked us in was neither warm not welcoming and actually appeared annoyed to have to do this task. The other staff we encountered seemed young, inexperienced, and very casual in both manner and dress, not what you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. For example: A gentle tap on our door turned out to be a young boy of 10 or 12 in blue jeans and a baseball cap asking if we would like "turn-down" service. Dinner in the dining room on our first night was disappointing as well. The "Soup of the Day", Lobster Bisque, was a thick dark brown sauce, congealed at the edges, that seemed more like a Cajun roux with a few pieces of lobster thrown on top. The Roasted Beet Salad with Goat Cheese was actually 90% field greens with minimal amounts of beets and goat cheese. And the silliness of the waiter donning a white glove to replace our used silverware was so at odds with the with the overall lack of professional service as to be ludicrous. But the worst experience came on the last
night when a very loud private party in the function room below us went on until after 2 AM. We had been assured by the young woman at the desk that it would be over by 11PM. Since there was no phone in the room, our only option was to trek down in our pajamas to complain which we were not comfortable doing. The manager took a percentage off our room as we checked out the following morning, but it didn't make up for a lost night's sleep. Our advice: enjoy a drink in front of the fireplace or on the front porch, but don't waste your money staying here.

Dalvay by the Sea is perfectly located on the National Seashore of PEI and presents a very elegant exterior. That is the end of the good things we have to stay. For $225 per night, we were stuck in a third floor dormer room (no elevator, tho baggage help available), with "antique" furniture (the door on the dresser did not close). Stuffy to the point where sleeping was impossible without the air conditioner, we gave up after one night though we had reserved for four. One of the amenities that attracted us was the availability of a canoe for the use of guests. We arrived on a Friday but were told the canoe had been commandeered for a wedding the following day and was not available. We were also told that, because of wedding, they were uncertain whether the dining room would be serving guests. Similarly, the lounge would not be accessible from 5-8 on Saturday evening because it had been reserved for a private anniversary party. We expect that, at one time, Dalvay by the Sea was a destination hotel but not since guests arrived by horse-drawn carriage.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.
