“Dream Vacation”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

My wife grew up on the Anne of Green Gables books and more than anything she wanted to stay at this hotel. We were able to book one night, July 29th, and it was more than we could have ever hoped for.

We had any absolutely beautiful room with a wonderful view of the lake and sea. We spent some time on the nearby beach just walking and wading in the water. We also decided to have dinner at the hotel's restaurant and we were not disappointed.

The meal was fantastic and the service was amazing. Our host, Mr. Alex, provided excellent suggestions from the menu and our server made sure we didn't lack anything the whole time. Afterwards, we stepped up to the bar for some nice conversation with the bartender and a night cap. Between the bartender (an Irish lady that I hope will forgive me for forgetting her name) and the attendant on duty, they went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. (Delivering our drinks to the front porch and even tracking down some bug repelling candles to make our evening more comfortable. We hadn't even ASKED about that. They were just thinking ahead!)

The whole staff made us feel at home for our short stay. My wife was so happy because she had been nervous that after visiting the area and the hotel, it wouldn't live up to her expectations and her childhood fantasies would be tainted and that simply was not the case at all. It exceeded our expectations in every way and we can only hope to visit again someday!

Escape the hustle and bustle of the 21st century and enjoy a return to the gracious living of the 1800's. Dalvay by the Sea features excellent service from friendly, smiling staff who are ready to help with any request.
The hotel is immaculate and full of atmosphere of a bygone age. We even heard a ghost story! Every good establishment of this age needs at least one.

Our room was extremely comfortable. Climbing the stairs to the third floor allowed us the opportunity to work off our delicious meal. The lack of electronics in the room just adds to the ambiance and the sea breeze blowing gently through the windows lulled us to sleep. I highly recommend this hotel as a place to unwind from the stress of modern life.

Dalvay is in a national park which was a bit of a surprise as we had to fork over $40 to get there. However, we agreed we would have paid that sooner or later; we fell in love with PEI right away so not much could spoil our overall good humour. We decided to splurge a bit on our stay and chose one of the best rooms (the same one Kate and Will stayed in). It was spacious with beautiful pieces and the bed was super comfortable. I did think a small vase of fresh flowers on the window table would have suited the class and ambience of the room. A few more details like that could raise the bar and match the price. I loved that there were no phones, clocks or TVs. We didn't notice the lack of air conditioning which we generally dislike anyway. Our room had lots of windows bringing in fresh ocean breezes. The house itself is amazing. Yes, it is old and a bit tired in places, but what a grand old dame with character and history. The staff were wonderful although we did get the impression that there have been struggles with previous management. The location was perfect, right across from a wonderful beach which we walked for miles. Coming from a large city, Cavendish and Charlottetown seemed close enough for me...about 20 minutes away. The restaurant was a bit overpriced but their sticky toffee date pudding is to die for.
We were very sad to leave this unique inn and would come back for sure. I noticed mixed reviews on Dalvay when we booked but we were very happy with our decision and hope that the owners and management will continue to raise the bar for this wonderful place.

Family of seven in a one bedroom cottage. Read trip advisor before coming and was cautious/ weary about food, but thought it must be ok. Well, i will not be as subtle as other reviewers. Food is inedible. Kids meals are 12$. The kids pizza was puff pastry with three pepperoni pieces and less than an ounce if cheese. It crubled like a croissant. Her fries looked yummy. Adults were served reheated old lobsters that were the worst i have ever eaten. Left almost half. (35$ each) My mom had a seafood dish that was disgusting wrapped in puff pastry that was not even cooked. Other kids had pasta plate so small with no sauce and a boiled weiner. Four bite portion. Extremely small for $12. Would not have even paid $1 for it. A huge tourist trap restaurant - do not eat here . Stay in cottage and bring everything you need to eat. There is no kitchen. Only a small fridge. Tennis court is a parking lot with a fence. Hard asphalt with some lines painted. Clean cottage initially but housekeeping did not make beds. We did. Would not return. An embarassment for PEI and no sense of pride. Chefs should spend more time cooking and reviewing menu than chatting on picnic tables. Richards up the street had best lobster rolls i ever had. Fish and chips at richards was just ok if you like breading. I prefer batter on fish and chips. At richards, ask for salad. Too many fries and a bit greasy. Very friendly there though.

Arrived after having toured Prince Edward island, which had been a charming experience. Dalvay is a magnificent property -- on the dunes, gorgeous mansion, large well appointed rooms, impressive interior architecture -- the fire places have to be seen!

Dinner takes place in a somewhat formal dining room, with views of the garden (and the geese), the menu was well varied and had a good selection. The service -- well that's the wannabe. It is a good sign of service if dinner arrives decently simultaneously for all guests at the table (there were 3 of us), if the waiter has a clue what the dish consists of -- and if s/he doesn't, show some interest and energy to figure it out. having toured the wineries of Nova Scotia the day before, we were disappointed that the restaurant didn't have any such wines in their selection. While the house was gorgeous and the stay was pleasant, the little extra that would take our stay from average to experience (quality:price ratio) had room for improvement

This is an experience. The main facilities are housed in a certified Historic residence with a number of bedrooms available. Its not for everyone — no air-conditioning, no elevators to the second and third floors since the historic preservation rules would not permit them. And it is expensive by P.E.I. standards. However, all the bedrooms are furnished with antique furniture and the beds are comfortable if not somewhat high. There is a good restaurant on site. The staff is outstanding by any standards. They are knowledgeable and helpful . Our stay there was pleasant and relaxing.

Room Tip: first floor doubles a cozy(small) but remember no elevators. This was a mansion

The room was nice, but nothing special, and was hot and humid without air conditioning. The food was overpriced and not fantastic -- fine, but not up to the price charged. The hotel is too far from Cavendish and other attractions (nothing they can do about that, but it added an hour to our drives everyday to go back and forth) and is way overpriced for what you get. The staff is lovely and helpful. If you want something comparable but better done, go to the Barachois Inn. ;-)
