“An extraordinary escape”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

We stayed in a cottage for a week with two kids aged 12 and 14, and had one of our best family vacations ever!

This place is, quite simply, extraordinary. The setting is magnificent, with the sprawling Baskatong reservoir, beautiful sandy beach, remarkably secluded location, and mountains in the distance. The effect is quite magical - between the location (45 minutes away from closest town), the serene environment, gorgeous cottage and off the grid location (wifi works in the reception, but not in cottage), the Windigo instantly transports you to relaxation and family fun.

The surprise of the place is the restaurant, which is top-notch. This allowed us to have a real break, since we had two brunches and two lovely dinners in the restaurant, with the rest of the meals prepared in the cottage. You just can't believe the quality and variety of food on offer in such a secluded spot.

The cottage is perfection - rustic but charming, immaculate, fully equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, complete with laundry and satellite TV for nighttime or rainy afternoons.

The setting is an ideal mix of total relaxation with enough activities to keep the family happily occupied - bikes, a fun obstacle course in the forest, pool, ping pong, canoes, kayaks and a trampoline in the lake that the kids adored. The kids met lots of other children and instantly connected, which made for a very convivial and charming stay.

It's clear that this is a place built with the love, hard work and incredible attention to every detail of the Belgian owner and his family ... the European flair really comes through.

The highlight was that we rented the "Sphaire" for an evening - an incredible first in Canada in "glamping". It's an inflated dome that provides the most comfortable and memorable camping experience we've ever come across -- very comfortable beds and enchanting views of the stars over head (even a mini toilet and electricity for lights! Definitely worth experiencing.

The service is consistently excellent - the staff are genuine, warm and incredibly helpful. There is a smile at every turn, and you feel truly welcomed and treasured as a guest.

We have tried several similar family resorts (for example in Calabogie and Jouvence), as well as Club Meds, but this tops them all in terms of quality, value and providing for an ideal family escape sure to please kids and parents alike.

Le Village Windigo is hospitality and escape at its very best ... I recommend it without reservation!

Room Tip: Try out the Sphaire!

Great place in the middle of nowhere with beautiful condo at the Beach which we got through the belgium director of the place. Clean, spacious and nicely decorated. Eye for detail!
Beach is beautiful plenty of sunbeds. Free canoeing and kayaking. Lots of stuff for kids to play with. Beautiful campfre every evening with other guests. With great sunset that makes you feel at the end of the world.
Good idea is to bring food and drinks before you come here because the store is 45 min away;)
Would love to come back with christmas.

Our family of four (including newborn baby) spend two weeks there in Summer 2012 and we still remember Windigo Village as one of our best family vacation. In the middle of pristine wilderness we found luxurious and stylish cottage, very clean. The staff was very nice. Our son enjoyed spending time in games room with very polite staff who was always there ready to play with children so adults could take few minutes off. The beach was very well taken care off, with all sorts of equipment -canons, kayaks, other vessels, as well as swimming vests, badminton, beach volleyball and many others available at all times without reservations. Big floaters at the beach and bikes were available too. You just walked there and used whatever you wanted. Everything was clean. The French restaurant was superior, with the nice view of the lake. In the evenings there was entertainment available -huge bone fire at the beach, story tellers or some musicians. We were deeply impressed with the vision the owner of this village had and the fact that you can create miracle of civilization in such remote area. I was impressed with the trails for hiking, built especially for guests, as well as the fact that the easiest of them was accessible to strollers, so we all could enjoy the nature and observe Blue Jays. The vacation was perfect, with all amenities of modern civilization in the middle of wild nature.

This was our first stay at Village Windigo but definitely not the last!
From the first contact on the phone for reservation, we felt welcome. The person was very pleasant and even suggested we arrive as early as possible to take advantage of the site and all the amenities. The length of the trip to get there is worth it! Geneviève, the receptionist, was very nice and resourceful. We had condo number 9 with a breathtaking view over the lake. It was well furnished, clean and even the fireplace was ready to be lit - however we did not do it since the weather was so warm...The kitchen has everything that you need for a several day stay and there is even a BBQ on the balcony. if you intend to eat in, we recommend to do your groceries at the huge IGA in Mont-Laurier right at the corner of Hébert street where you need to turn towards Windigo. However, the restaurant is worth trying for dinner, as we did - it was excellent and the service impeccable - thanks to Nancy and Ben. Pick one of the tables overlooking the lake. Breakfast is served there too and it's what you would expect in a resort of this class and more - we had very good service from a young student summer employee. As an added bonus note that there is a fire pit on the beach with plenty of wood....bring your mash mellows ...
Only one suggestion - wifi should be available in the condos and the restaurant.

Hello,

I'm delighted you had a wonderful time at Windigo and that you intend to come back. Summer is great and winter with the fire place is great too.
I take good note for the internet in the condos as well as in the restaurant. This is in our plan for next year.

We've travelled here twice now, and had the opportunity to compare the resort to a similar property nearby in Quebec - Windigo compared very favourably for us. It's a bit of a trek - with the last 20 min is on a windy undulating road that badly needs repaving, but it's worth it when you arrive.

The resort consists of a handful of condo suites and well appointed private cabins in a mini-village. We've stayed in the same waterfront cabin both years - and would happily return. With a large group, it's nice that each bedroom has it's own full bathroom. The rooms and equipment are kept clean and well maintained. The one time we had an issue with our dishwasher, staff remedied the problem within hours. Towels and linens are all very clean, and staff drop by daily to check on you and provide fresh linens/towels/toiletries or anything else you might need.

All cabins are a short walk from the common beach and reception area. Near the reception area, there is a well appointed games room, tennis courts and the small restaurant. There is also a large selection of DVDs that you can borrow to watch in your suite/cabin. Staff seem very eager to do what they can to make your stay more enjoyable. For both of our stays, there were no guests arriving the day of our departure, and staff provided us with a later checkout at no charge.

The beach is kept clean and groomed, with ample lounge chairs and umbrellas, a volleyball court and a fire pit which staff will start for you during the evenings. The swimming area is relatively small, though there are several canoes, kayaks and paddle boats that can be borrowed for exploring. We never had any trouble getting boats - though that may be different at more crowded times. All of the boats are operable, though some of the kayaks are in need of repairs.

Windigo is located a small bay off of the Baskatong Reservoir - a very large man-made lake. The small bay provides a calm area for novice boaters to explore with the without having to deal with the large waves that sometimes occur on the main lake when the wind picks up. Just around the corner from the resort is a beautiful secluded beach that's perfect for swimming or wading on the soft sandy bottom (nicer than the Windigo beach). It is a 10-15 minute canoe/kayak from Windigo's main beach and well marked on the area maps.

There are plenty of biking/hiking trails around the area. The resort has a handful of bikes that can be borrowed, though they are in very poor condition, so bring your own if you intend to bike. You can also rent ATVs at a cost.

There is a waterfall on some smooth rocks nearby ('chute windigo') that is worth checking out, though slide down at your own risk. The rocks are very slippery, and accident could result in serious injury.

Our main negative is the cost. At full price, it is close to triple the cost of a private cottage rental in the area. You definitely do get some benefits for the large premium (easy reservations, reliably maintained cabins, helpful staff, facilities), though our group questions that these are worth such a steep premium. We will no doubt return if there are discounts offered for non-peak times (as was the case for our first visit), but will likely look more at closely at private cottage rentals next time.

Room Tip: For condo suites, request an upper floor suite for a better view and more privacy from a walking pat...

Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience at Windigo.
What can I add to your comments.
I do take notes for improving our bikes and canoo material. We usually buy new materials every year to complete our inventory but do not replace all of it.
Glad that you could experience different seasons and rates. Summer is one of our most popular season specially with our beach and all free access material.

hoping to see you again at Windigo

Dear Louise,

Thank you for sharing your experience at Windigo. Not much to add. We offer both condos with view on the Baskatong or on the forest side. It is the same for our cottages. Mainly our 3 bedroom chalet offer a view on the lake and our 2 bedroom chalet offer a forest side with a partial view on the lake.

I'm sure our staff will be delighted to read about your comments on the food quality and the service.

We hope to see you again in a near future.

We had the opportunity to spend a couple of days at Village Windigo a few weeks back. It was a very pleasant stay in a very charming environment by Réservoir Baskatong close to Mont-Laurier. The condo we had was facing the lake and it was very comfortable and quiet. We went for a ride on kayaks and pedalboat on the first day while we chose mountain bikes the next day.

For dinner, we enjoyed a 7-course meal that was outstanding. Chef Noé really did a great job on that occasion. After dessert, staff prepared a fire on the beach by the lake for us. What a relaxing evening we had!

We want to highlight the excellent service and professional attitude we experimented in every aspect of this trip to Village Windigo. We would recommend this place anytime!
