Hotel Meson de San Antonio
Ranked #8 of 30 Hotels in Patzcuaro
Reviewed 26 August 2009

This was our third stay and we enjoyed it the most since we were there for 5 days. A remodled hacienda with approx. 8 rooms done and another 7 to go. On one of the days, we happened back to the room midday and Kathy saw how they were cleaning the rooms. She was totally amazed having been raised by a "clean freak mother"! We checked out other hotels in centro Patzcuaro and some were a bit less expensive but not the value of this establishment! The cental courtyard is incredible!

Though there was no one around to greet us when we arrived, the courtyard was so lovely that walking around and looking for someone didnt feel like a problem. Alfredo, once found, was very helpful and generous with his time. Our large room, decorated with local crafts, included a charming fireplace that was laid each day and ready to put a match to. A beautiful Mexican kitchen is there for your use, allowing you to purchase and prepare whatever you might want to add to the coffee/tea, fresh breads and sweet roles that are offered. A unique arrangement which worked very well and offers the possibility of preparing your own lunch or dinner as well. A beautiful place to stay in a town I look forward to returning to.

All the great reviews are true, there's really not much more I can add. My husband and I, plus my daughter and son-in-law, stayed for 3 nights in March '09. We had our small dog along, which was fine with the staff (some hotels in Mexico don't allow dogs). We absoultely loved our room! We used the fireplace every night. Secure parking was only a block away. Free wi-fi in the rooms too. Can't wait to go back!

Every now and then, you come across a hotel in your travels that's perfect (at least to you in that moment) in every way. I don't say this about many places, but it absolutely applies to this place. The first words out of my mouth when I walked up the cobblestone path into the courtyard were, "Ya me gusto" ("I already like it," or some reasonable facsimlie thereof...). It only got better from there...

A few minutes walk from both main squares of Patzcuaro (lovely and charming colonial town), you truly feel you've entered an oasis. An absolutely lovely courtyard filled with flowering trees, cacti and strategically placed patio furniture for relaxing invites you to take a load off. Host Alfredo is a kind and gracious gentleman with a twinkle in his eye who runs the hotel with the able help of his daughter Berenice (sp?) and Claudia (not sure if she's his daughter), and they're all ready, willing and happy to help with suggestions for dining, sightseeing, day trips, bus schedules, etc.

It definitely helps to know some Spanish in this part of Mexico, but if you don't, you'll still get along just fine. Walking into the property feels like you've stepped back in time and are the guest of some provincial Mexico governor during the 1800's. At night, sitting on a bench in the courtyard looking up at the glorious star-filled sky only heightens the sensation of times gone by...

And the rooms themselves? Absolutely lovely, and far better than they have to be for the price charged (roughly $40-50 as I write this in 03/09). Mine (#15) had two levels in a way - you enter into a fireplaced sitting area, then step up to the next level where the two full-size beds share space with a table and chair. In the morning, sunlight streamed in through the long windows (see pix), making you almost giddy with the sense that you were getting away with robbery to have such a special sanctuary for such an exceptionally low fare...

Added bonus is Wi-Fi, which they claim works just in the courtyard, but worked just fine while sitting at my desk by the window. If you left the computer at home, they've got one for community use for free. And speaking of community use, they've opened up their large living room and kitchen (seasoned and or aspiring chefs will have to love this kitchen) to all to use whenever you like, and a continental breakfast is served every morning at 8.

There are plenty of hotels in Patzcuaro closer to the squares than this one (though we're only talking minutes here), but in a perverse sort of way, walking a bit farther to Meson de San Antonio gives you a feeling that you've escaped to your sanctuary and you'll appreciate it all the more. Of course, cabs are always around and are happy to drop you anywhere in the area for under $2.

If you're visiting Patzcuaro, make it easy on yourself and just book a room here. Why bother going anywhere else?

My husband and I stayed at the Meson last August (2008) and had a wonderful time there. This place is excellent: great location, great service and it's definitely affordable. We loved the atmosphere, since is very romantic and makes you feel like if you were in the 18th Century. Alfredo del Rio (the owner or administrator) is a wonderful gentleman, he gave us tips and made us feel in home.

Our family had a wonderful 3 nights at Meson de San Antonio...if only we could have stayed longer. The courtyard was mesmorizing. We were a group of 5: my husband and myself, 2 girls, ages 4 1/2 and 9 1/2, and my mother. We had 2 rooms side by side, each with 2 double beds , and we were surprised at how large the rooms were. The bathrooms were newly redone and very clean. And we even had a fire one night in our room. The rooms are all decorated differently and beautifully. Alfredo was most helpful, and a wonderful host. My youngest unfortunately became ill with a sinus infection and he coordinated an appointment with his pediatrician for us. And because we had a little one sick, we did utilize the family-style kitchen with take out from ChaChaCha one night, which was so great. The location is perfect too, as you are an easy 4-5 minute walk from the closest plaza, and it was nice and quiet at night. When we go back to Patzcuaro, we will definitely stay there again.

There is not a more lovely hotel in Patzcuaro than Meson de San Antonio. Less than 10 rooms facing a manicured central courtyard. Sits behind the main Cathedral at the top of the hill in a quiet area, yet only 3 blocks from the 2 main plazas of the old town. The place has been decorated with a good eye for detail, which gives the entire facility exactly the type of relaxing atmosphere that you seek in the Colonial Cities of Mexico. The public areas are a case study in understated elegance, which will not disappoint. You can not duplicate the quality for $75 for a double.
