“Super Huge Swap Meet”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

We went on a Thursday and it was like a never ending swap meet. We loved it! We found many wonderful things to buy. And many more we wished we could buy but had no way to get them back to the U.S. There are many open food vendors with wonderful things to eat. We spent an entire day here and left tired and happy.
It is only open Sundays and Thursdays so plan accordingly. If you plan to buy a lot buy a mesh bag with handles or even a wheeled cart. Both are inexpensive and life savers.

“Anything you want”

The markets have everything. Food, clothing, leather, jewelry, pottery, glassware, silver, furniture, EVERYTHING! Dislikes: Not enough time to shop.

“Great for your local craft shopping list”
Reviewed 22 May 2013

Just a 20 minute taxi ride from downtown is this craft market that sets up on Sunday morning and goes into early afternoon. You can find glass, wood, ceramic and clay crafts as well as some handmade earrings, clothing and other odds and ends - the people there are very creative!
We got very good deals, such as a set of 6 hand painted clay mugs for $4 USD. I especially recommend if you know spanish and are not opposed to being in crowds.

“Shopping Nirvana”
Reviewed 4 March 2013

The label for this attraction is a bit of a misnomer. Tonala is well known as cultural hotspot for the production of pottery, glass products, metal fabrication and numerous other products which fall into the Arts & Crafts categories. In addition to the numerous production facilities, there are lierally thousands of permanent shops and galleries selling all types of products.

As for the "Craft Market" aspect, there are numerous temporary stands or booths which open on a daily basis. On Thursdays and Sundays, their twice weekly "Market Days" bring thousands into the area and the town becomes total chaos! Attending on market day isn't for the weak of heart or the mobility challenged. Shopping Tonala on any day requires comfortable footwear and good stamina.

We have been shopping this goldmine since the late 90's and even though we feel we know the town well, it takes two to three days each trip to feel like we have done an adequate job of seeing all of the new shops and new products.

While I have included 15 photos with this review, it takes many more photos to really project the flavor of the town. Since TripAdvisor objects to posting links to photo albums, please feel free to send me a member message and I can provide a photo album with close to 500 photos we have taken through the years.
