At the Sian Ka’an in 2012 and again this year when it was adults only. This time we were there for R&R following my husband’s surgery. I emailed comfort requests which were honored and there were pleasant surprises waiting for us in our room. Thank you Claudia and Erika.
I agree with the positive posts will not repeat.
A couple of areas that need improvement in my opinion. The loungers at poolside and the beach are showing signs of age and are uncomfortable. A choice of a reclining beach/pool chair would be a nice touch. I “borrowed” a chair from the 24hr buffet while at the pool and I saw another guest do likewise. At the beach there was no choice.
In 2012 the entertainment in the lounge area was limited to a singer and softer music. This year the entertainment was imported from the other resorts, resulting in an unpleasant hour. We had previously regarded the Sian Ka’an lobby lounge as a refuge at day’s end where we could sit, have a drink and chat with other guests that we had met. This was difficult with the melee of the Elvis show and other entertainment. If we had needed this type of entertainment it was easy to take a ride to the other resorts. There was a visible exodus of guests leaving the lounge area when the entertainment began. Some, like us, tried to endure it. The poorly impersonated Elvis show was too loud. Please rethink this.
Daniel Guichaud the Buffet Manager was gracious and remembered us from a previous visit. It was good to see how Daniel has advanced his career from working at the Akumal. Demetrio, Luis, Ramon were excellent entertaining waiters in the Buffet. Martha our pool server remembered us too (her knowledge of English has noticeably improved since our last visit). Polite Norman at Reception was friendly and helpful. Bell boys all great.
All considered an enjoyable stay. We will return.

My wife and I went on vacation here from March 30th - April 6, 2014

Here's what you need to know:

1. On choosing a Bahia Principe property (there are four - Akumal, Coba, Tulum and Sian Kaan)
(I) Sian Kaan is on other size of highway in jungle, but if you don't mind a shuttle ride (about 8 minutes), then you have an "exclusive beach area for Sian Kaan". Sian Kaan is the newest o the properties and I'd argue the best hotel and best beach.
(ii) Sian Kaan has the two best restaurants on all properties - Alux and Maiko. The next best is Don Pablo. If you are at Sian Kaan, you can book at any restaurant and you can book for all your evenings, but people from other properties can't book at your restaurants.
(iii) If you are booking from a website, try several for the same hotel as there may be more than one airplane company option. Don't travel with Air Transat - terrible food. Try WestJet.

2. Before you go
(I) send email to hotel with your confirmation number requesting:
- booking of restaurant for first night of dinner - I suggest book Alux
- quiet room location, type of bed (King size), floor level (P.S. It is worth getting Penthouse if you plan to stick around room; skip garden Jacuzzi)
(II) Buy emergency travel insurance - learn about and buy from here: http://www.lycosasset.com/Personal%20Healthcare%20Insurance.html
(you have a one-in-three chance of being sick, we did, probably from food from plane and it cost us $700 for doctor consultation in his office and antibiotics; cost for two people for one week is roughly $45, well worth it)
(III) Bring a pile of $1 USD bills - this s your tipping money. You don't need pesos unless you are going into town. In town, you pay with Pesos - cheaper as you'll otherwise get ripped off on the foreign exchange

3. First morning there
(I) Book your restaurants for the week

4. All mornings
(I) Go to beach and put down your towels, books and bag/hat to reserve your place - if you don't do so before 10am, you're out of luck till the afternoon, unless you get lucky

5. If you are going to see some cities
(I) don't bother with city of Tulum, best to go to Playa del Carmen - but it is like North American city prices for everything - nice to see the beach, maybe have a lobster dinner
(II) Take the Collectivo shuttle bus that runs from Tulum to Playa del Carmen - you walk to highway - it is about $3.50 USD per person per direction versus $25 USD for a taxi (negotiate first, maybe you get for less price)

Now my review comments:

1. Bahia Principe I found to be the best value for your money of all resorts on the Riviera Maya coast.
2. Food is arguably the best for an "all-inclusive". It is about the quality of a Riu Palace hotel (we had stayed at the Riu Palace Peninsula on a prior trip in the suites and loved that).
3. We got very sick on our second day. This was likely from the airplane food or from bacteria on the airplane. Fortunately we didn't need to go to a hospital. Javier, the manager got Vanessa to take care of us. She arranged and accompanied us on a shuttle for us to the doctor's office, to the pharmacy and back. Vanessa called two days later and upgraded our room which made the last few days much nicer. That level of care we appreciated.
4. The buffet is good. Sit in the same area where you have a server get to know you. We had Miriam Jose and she was incredible. She would pour us coffee, get drinks and orange juice, and she came by several times to make sure if we needed anything.
5. Be careful with the sun - always have plenty of 60 level sunscreen and don't be more than 30 minutes in the sun. It really is surprising how fast before you burn.
6. We were going to do a trip but had to cancel. With doctor diagnosis and trip receipt we submitted to Elizabeth and she gave me cash back. The ones that looked most interesting are Xplor, Xcaret, and the waterpark. There's another one with a underwater cave that goes for miles - can't remember name.
7. If you order wine you pay for as well as make any orders for room service. Some places they don't charge for room service, so keep in mind.
8. Internet for getting email and basic stuff (like searches) was good in both room and hotel lobby. You don't pay for it. But if you like to watch movies with your laptop, you have to download first as much as you can and then watch. Riu was better in the suites. In many hotels, you have limited internet access - it is changing. At the Tulum property, the lobby was full of people sitting there on their phones and computers as the internet was free.

Overall we would say it is a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I hope this was helpful and wish you a great trip.

Stayed last year - got a great deal - blew our minds how great this place was.
Only resort down south we've ever wanted to return to soo bad
Booked again this year and will be back in 2 weeks!
Shuttle ride is less than 5 minutes to any resort or the beach , cmon lets stop over exaggerating
We NEVER waited more than 10 minutes to go anywhere or return to our resort from anywhere. Would you rather be packed in a 500+ room resort or be a nice 5 minute shuttle ride away in your private , secluded , peaceful BEAUTIFUL lush luxury resort. With private beach access and butler service at the beach.
Your hard pressed to find bad reviews for a good reason! Amazing resort , amazing food, amazing staff. Might have to look into those new condos because this is the spot to go.

Even after reading through the countless 5-star reviews this resort has received, my husband and I were still pleasantly surprised by how much we really enjoyed visiting this resort. Unlike many of the other (more expensive) properties we’ve visited, Sian Ka’an surpassed our expectations and delivered a great vacation. Before I get into all the positives, it’s worth noting a few issues that those who are thinking about booking should consider (if you can’t envision yourself getting passed these limitations, this may not be the resort for you):

-This is not a beach resort. It’s located across the highway and going to the beach (or any of the sister properties) requires a tram ride. We visited during spring break, and we presume they were at or close to capacity, but we had to resign ourselves to spending 10-30 minutes waiting for rides to and from the Sian Ka’an side.

-It can get really crowded at the beach and pools. Again, we knew we were traveling during a peak time, but we had a really hard time finding chairs. Granted we would be going to the beach/pool “late” by comparison to others but there was hardly anything available by 10am (keep in mind, we are accustomed to Pacific time). The Sian Ka’an beach area was just a mass of people – even if we could get loungers in that private area, we wouldn’t have wanted them given the “sea of people” already there. We ended up going to the far end of the resort (Tulum section) to find beach chairs that were relatively more isolated on most days but still lacked a direct view of the ocean. The pool area was also bad with the towel game in full effect.

-It is necessary to make dinner reservations. While I understand why a resort as big as the Bahia complex probably needs a reservation system, it is inconvenient to pre-book all dinners at the start of the vacation (how do you know when or what you’ll want to eat on a particular night?). Apparently there is an app that can help with this, although we never figured it out. Instead we booked all our dinners at customer service at the time of check in. The booking process was smooth but, in an ideal world, reservations wouldn't be needed at all.

Having mentioned those issues, here are the some of the many things Sian Ka’an got right:

-Best food we’ve had at an all-inclusive (probably better than most restaurants we go to in the states). Seriously, all meals were good and several were exceptional. For our a la carts, we went to Portofino, Don Pablo, Alux (twice), Maiko and Arlequin. It’s hard to rank them because each meal was really good and had as much “gourmet” as one can expect for an AI resort. If pressed, however, we’d probably rank the buffet as our favorite, especially for breakfast and the gala dinners (Saturday nights). There were so many options and everything tasted as good as it looked.

-Wifi was free and worked reasonably well throughout the resort. This may seem like a minor issue but, for us, it’s really important to stay in contact with our families back home. Our vacation was improved by not having to stress about connection issues or finding a special place in the resort with signal.

-No timeshare sharks roaming the lobby. We weren't harassed once about vacation clubs or other schemes… although, admittedly, I felt tempted to ask about the residences given our amazing experience at the property.

-Check-in was smooth. The front desk staff were friendly and we were quickly checked into our room (which was ready). We went to the customer service desk to make our dinner reservations for the week. The woman who helped us was very patient and accommodating as she made our reservations while we enjoyed margaritas. We were able to get all our requests at the time we wanted (~8pm). We were then whisked away, with our bags, to our room.

-The facilities were beautiful and well-kept. Just remember that it is in a jungle setting, so bug spray is important.

-No complaints about our room. We got the most basic category and were impressed. It is a modern design, so not much storage. There is a closet, however, with shelves. If staying organized on the vacation is important, perhaps consider investing in packing cubes (simply unpack them onto the shelves). Loved that the bathroom had a REAL door – why other resorts decided that a glass door provides adequate privacy still baffles me. The room was always cleaned and the mini-bar was stocked by the time we got back in the afternoon.

-Last, but most importantly, service was exceptional. Everyone we met was very kind, enthusiastic and working very hard to make our vacation special. Unfortunately, we couldn't get everyone’s names, but here are a few individuals that we would especially like to thank: Martha (pool), Fausto (pool), Luis (buffet), Citali (lobby), Zeidi (lobby), Rosario (lobby), Isabel (lobby), Ishmael ( lobby) and Jesus (snack bar). Tipping was never expected, but given how hard everyone was working, it seemed like the least we could do and we were glad that we had planned for this.

So, overall, this is a great resort and we’d go again. I would highly recommend it to those who are looking for an excellent value and do not mind being away from the beach.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, request a room in one of the buildings away from the street (there wa...

Here are my pros and cons:

Rooms:
We were in the junior suite on the third floor just as we asked for thanks to Claudia. Nice set up small couch, coffee table, divider with flat screen TV. Bathroom nice, we used the shelves for our clothes and there was enough space to hang clothes.
We also had problems with the shower head, we had to have it fixed, and a light was out in the bathroom but got fixed as soon as I mentioned it. Our toilet also ran but I fixed it myself. Rooms should be inspected before arrival of guests that everything is in working order.

Buffet:
Food was great, but on occasion the tables set up for large groups were empty while we were trying to find a table for 2 or 4.
I think that they will have to expand their buffet as the resort is expanding selling condos and townhouses that will have access to all the GP facilities.

Pools:
Nice but shallow which is great for me. You cannot stop people from reserving their chairs if there is not enough to accommodate the number of people staying at the resort, this happens at all resorts I have been to. For some reason a resort builds a place to have 500 rooms and builds a few pools that accommodate I will take a guess and say 100 guests if that.

Grounds:
Beautiful, very lush gardens, a very nice spot and it is relaxing.

Entertainment: Band is good but I do not need to see Elvis and Michael Jackson every other day. This resort is not set up for the shows as they are in the lobby and down by the outdoor section which is blocked by a concrete wall design.

Transportation: now for my pet peeve the part I do not feel is relaxing.
I knew coming to this place that getting to the beach we would be taking the Shuttles, only a 10 minute wait. Try 45 minutes to get to the Akumal lobby, or waiting from that Akumal lobby over 30 minutes to get back to your resort. Thank you Carlos for looking after us on the second day that we did not have to wait long.
The beach shuttle arrives at 7:15 am or 7:20 am then the Akumal 10 minutes later (sometimes). The problem with this is everyone is going to the beach to put their towels on their chairs then come back for breakfast. (Not enough chairs for the occupants of the Sian Ka’an).
So our trolley to Akumal lobby then picks us up; we have now waited sometimes as long as 20 minutes and the beach people as there is another line up by that time, takes them first to the beach then us on to the Akumal lobbey. The beach trolley did not offer do take us and detour over to Akumal lobby and I do understand why as the numbers are greater. It is just a hassle.
The fact that this resort is smaller than the others it seems the shuttles are less.
This should be rectified as we were not alone waiting, from the Hacienda at least 35 minutes.
When on vacation I don't want to be standing around waiting for 30 minutes to get somewhere, but that is me, it may not be a problem for someone else.

We will probably go back to the GP Akumal, closer to the beach; shuttles are available every 10 minutes.
We spent 3 days at the GP Akumal beach as I was not going to the beach reserve my spot and then go back to the Sian Ka’an for breakfast. To us it was just not worth our time, the Akumal has a great buffet also.

For those who want adult only and do not mind waiting it is a perfect location, just not for us.
I must say that Claudia is the best she will look after your needs; thank you Claudia. Also Norman is very helpful at the front desk.

Tips: I have found putting a towel where the gap at the bottom of the door helps keep the insects out.

Room Tip: We stayed in building 10, 3rd floor, if the heat bothers you the steps maybe too much in the humid w...

Booked last minute and was thoroughly impressed. Have stayed at resorts like Sandals in Jamaica but also visit a 4 star in Cayo Coco Cuba yearly. Although the beach in Cuba is superior and more natural the Cubans have a difficult time competing to enable a luxury status. Sian Ka"an was just lovely. I was dismayed to read some reviews that criticized staff for their eagerness for tips. I saw none of that-staff were pleasantly surprised to receive tips. The buffet was stupendous and Luis, Demetrio and Ramon were very kind and always found us a nice table.

The room was lovely and cleaned very well each day. The day beds by the small pool were very comfortable with a bar and sushi available. We very much enjoyed the Maiku, went twice it was so good, get the ice cream tempura.

The Alux was excellent as well with the best mushroom soup. We also very much enjoyed the Don Pablo- excellent celery soup and the Gran Tortuga was super.

I had a bad back so was not keen on golfing. The cart rental per person is a bit steep although the course looks lovely.

I did the bicycle and eco tour walk. Very interesting and pleased to see the huge greenhouses and reforestation project ongoing just behind the section we stayed in. Geovanni gave a great tour.

The Sian Ka'an has it's own small beach area with good service but the beach area is small however you can go anywhere. saw a giant barracuda just offshore. Beautiful!

I am not much of an entertainment person but we did enjoy meeting the magician Conrado- he is great!

All in all it is much busier than Cuba but it has wonderful amenities, excellent food and very kind people.

We are in our early 30s and were seeking for a relaxing all inclusive in mexico. Sian kaan meet our expectation in terms of atmosphere, food, service and drinks. We loved all the trees in the resort, feel very peacefull. The buffet was very very good ! The only down side is the lack of chair either at the pool or the beach. People reserved the beach chair with only their towel for hours before showing up!

Overall very pleasant vacation.
