“Great Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

Many people to thank for making our stay so enjoyable. Claudia....thank you for preparing our room/mini bar prior to our arrival and making our dinner reservations. Vanessa.....thank you for upgrading us to the penthouse after our first night. Agnes....thank you for taking the time to come to our room to get a few issues sorted out in a timely manner. You all have outstanding customer service and we appreciate everything you did for us.

Manuel ..... your service at the breakfast buffet every morning went above and beyond. Thank you for the bananas and strawberries each morning! Your friendly attitude was a great way to start our day.

Now for an actual review. The resort is lovely, however extremely big and a bit remote if you like the beach. You can walk if you want but it will take you about 50 minutes - - otherwise the trolley takes about 10 - 15 minutes. This is a bit annoying each day but well worth the spectacular beach once you get there.

The food is very good and plenty of variety. We tried the Japanese and French at Sian Kaan and the Tequila at Tulum and Italian at Coba. Japanese was our favourite.

Rooms - - standard rooms are a bit small but the penthouse suite is quite comfortable. The only thing missing is a full length mirror and luggage racks.

Overall great vacation! Enjoy if you decide to go!

Room Tip: Ask for penthouse!

This is becoming a habit... a really good one...

My wife and I have just returned from our third visit to this resort and our ... ummm... 8th or 9th visit to the Gran Bahia property in Mexico - having stayed at the GBP "Coba" 5 or 6 times. Obviously we like the GBP resort overall - we have stayed at a number of other all inclusive resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica, but this place keeps being the right balance of quality and price that keep us returning.

Highlights:

The staff are truly excellent. Many of them are long-time employees who take pride in their jobs and have been with GBP for many years. Shining stars, people who go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and valued, include: Carlos, the bartender at the pool bar - try his "Green Lizard!"; Christina with the "animation team"; Eglayde, Victor and Emma(these three are exceptional wait staff at the buffet); and the commitment to service is demonstrated by the management, with the guest services Managers, Vanessa and Erika, being truly wonderful people dedicated to delivering excellence in service. Great staff can go a long way in making a "very good" resort "Outstanding!" and these folks do exactly that.

The restaurants and buffets are very good - particularly the two a la carte restaurants on the Sian Ka'an property, (Alux and Maiko) but there are many other excellent restaurants at the other "hotels" you can enjoy - The Brazilian restaurant, La Turtuga, is great (if you like meat of course), the Mexican is terrific and all of the "gourmet" style are wonderful (Don Pablo, Arlequin and La Gourmet - each at a different "hotel")

The beach - long, large and with a section and bar specifically reserved for Sian Ka'an guests, this is a great place to swim, snorkel, play games and catch rays.

Dive shop - great people, location, services, facilities, and convenience - Diving at a resort doesn't get any better than this unless you are going to a resort that caters to diving only.

The "less than perfection, but still pretty darn good":
Yes the shuttles that deliver you around the larger GBP property and to the beach can be a small bit of a drag, but honestly, this trip we had only a couple of occasions where we waited more than 3 or 4 minutes, and it really isn't a problem - it might be nice if at the ending of the day say 4:30 - 5:30 they had an additional shuttle running from the beach to the resort to carry people back, but that is the only time it seems to get crowded.
- I should note that improvements in this area are apparent with improvements to keep the shuttles in nice shape and new lighting LED strips on the ceiling of the shuttles making an evening trip much nicer with decent lighting - and It did seem that this trip we found ourselves waiting less than in previous visits.

Entertainment location - There is a performance that takes place in the lobby most evenings that seems like it really should take place in a better theatre - I know there is no place at Sian Ka'an to do it, and the quality of the performances are truly first rate (not the ridiculous "embarrass the guests" entertainment I've seen at some resorts.) The negative here is that the lobby bar would be a great place to have an evening drink and socialize, but the overwhelming volume of the show makes that less than comfortable... a theatre would help, but I wouldn't know where it would go. I will point out that on the GBP property there are a few nice places to have a relaxing evening drink that are very nice including the "premier lobby" and the very nice bar off the lobby at Tulum - so a quick shuttle ride away there are a few really nice options.

All in all, great people, great service, great food, and very good facilities... a great habit...

Room Tip: The most basic room, a Junior suite, is just a bit too small for me. If you are there more than 7 da...

I never write reviews so I thought I pay it forward to future guests. I did quite a bit of research before our trip to the Tulum area and the reviews on trip advisor were all pretty much spot-on! Being an interior designer, I tend to be a bit more particular on the decor/ambiance of most places I visit - was pleasantly surprised when we arrived :).The resort was beautiful and VERY well maintained (my husband and I joked when there was a leaf on the ground because there always seemed to be a grounds member sweeping or leaf blower to keep them off the walking paths). Staff was phenomenal - very attentive and wanted to make sure you had everything you needed. They all went above and beyond to make the trip enjoyable.

We arranged the SolTour transportation recommended by the resort to get to/from the airport and it was about $175 round trip and went VERY smooth.

We had no issues getting a ride to the other resorts - never waited more than 5 minutes except at 6 am one morning when we wanted to go watch the sunrise. One of the staff members noticed us waiting and grabbed an available cart and took us to the beach. We probably spent $200 tipping total on entire trip but were never approached to tip or felt like we had to.

Only issue we had (not a problem at all) was our penthouse wasn't available our first night so without hesitation, the front desk offered a romantic dinner in return for the mistake. We didn't think anything of it and assumed since we on vacation without kids every meal was going to be romantic...but Melvin really pulled some strings and got us the hook up at Maiko our second night there. We lost count on the number of courses the wait staff brought out and the rose petals, bottle service, etc. were a great surprise! We were the only ones getting that kind of service that night and it felt special. They even brought us champagne to our room after we returned (as if the appetizer, sushi, soup, lobster, steak, and 2 desserts were not enough!) I visited the spa on the last day for a cenote mud massage/facial/wrap and it was heavenly - got in the same day I called which I wasn't expecting.

We had planned on venturing off the resort for a lot of the trip but didn't in the end as we had enough to do during our stay. A taxi to Tulum ruins (just ask shuttle driver to take you to taxis) was about $50 round trip and the driver waited 2.5 hours for us to finish. We golfed at the resort ($295 for 2 with cart and rentals with some balls - fyi and within walking distance) and ate at Maiko, Portofino, Meatteraneo, and Alux for the reservation dinners. All the buffets were good - not fabulous like the restaurants but good and if we didn't like it there was always chips and guac and ice cream at the snack bar :) We found the buffet at Tulum the place to go since it was so large.

Splurge on the penthouse as it offers the most privacy - we stayed in room 42024 and it was perfect amount of distance to lobby and pools but still had great views and was very quiet.

Room Tip: Try and stay on a room facing away from pools/common areas for most privacy.

We recently returned from a wonderful stay at Sian Kaan. Week of March 29th-April 5th. We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and stayed at many nice resorts, but this one stands out as the best we have encountered.
As RCI members we were given the Top upgrade package called The Privilege Club. The package was very nice! It allowed you to have extra luxuries and conveniences which for the most part were well thought out and the members enjoy their own private beach and beach bar stocked with all Top Shelf Liquor. However, after speaking with others that didn't have the upgrade, the service and level of comfort they received was just as good minus the extras that we enjoyed.
The Resort is part of four resorts together. It is the only All Adult resort on the property. It was very well planned and although it is not on the beach, it is just a short tram ride from it. Sian Kaan has it's own Beach which has some of the nicer amenities. The beaches have man made barriers/reef off shore to stop the waves from crashing in and eroding the beach. They create nice pools that warm up quickly and are fun to climb on as well. The beach cats appeared to be in very good conditioned and well maintained.
The Grounds are immaculate and the Food/selection was excellent! The Buffets were top quality and the Restaurants throughout all four resorts were Excellent! At Sian Kaan there is a 24 hour restaurant/snack bar open and there is even 24 hour room service. All the liquor is Top Shelf and they have no problem allowing you to include your all at this all inclusive! The Staff were amazing!
The management has assembled some of the best resort staff from all over to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. They are constantly training and the majority speak enough English so there are no misunderstandings.
The rooms on the first floor and some on the third have private outdoor hot tubs. It was too warm for us to enjoy it, but it was cleaned everyday. The night life was plentiful with shows at all the resorts and a small Casino at the Coba Lobby. With the immense size of the property there was always a pool to find that fit your taste. Some extremely active and others that you could hear a pin drop as well as everything in-between. Because of the size of the property you never have to leave, you can spend the week going to different areas and never get bored! Thursday nights there is a Mexican Fiesta at "The Hacienda" on the property. This is the resorts answer to all the touristy shops along with a fun Mexican/Mayan show. We enjoyed it very much!
This resort is situated away from the beach and next to the Top Notch Golf Course. The management is in the process of building condominiums on the site and have planned a shopping center for the live-in community. Their concept is unique and well worth looking into if you plan on a Mexico Retirement.
All in all, when you see Sian Kaan touted as five star, they really are! We intend to go back next year and look forward to more of what we always expected in service and comfort from all the others but never received......Until Now! We Highly Recommend this resort! Enjoy!

Room Tip: Pick a first or third floor room. They are bigger and have private outdoor hot tubs. Rooms close to...

We had an incredible time during our vacation in March. The resort is very modern, quiet yet has everything that you would need. The rooms had minimalist decor however were well appointed with balconies and very comfortable king sized beds. Sian Ka'an is part of a larger complex that comprises the Grand Bahia Principe Coba, Tulum and Akumal resorts. However the connection of the trolleys made everything accessible and quick to get to.

The food was delicious! The Alux restaurant had meals that were well prepared, tasty and artfully presented. This was definitely our favourite. We also loved the buffet that had many options. The sushi pool bar was delicious, fresh and had a good selection of rolls.

The trolley from the front lobby took you right to the Sian Ka'an section of the beach which had a dedicated bar and impeccable service. The service we received at the resort took our vacation for great to awesome. Here are some individuals who made our stay even better:
- Oscar at the Sian Ka'an beach bar
- Jose the smiling bartender at the beach bar
- Lauro who served us at the sushi bar and pool bar
- Isabel who served us many evenings in the lobby bar (thank you for the Agua Mexicana)
- and Vanessa who ensured that our dinner reservations were exactly to our liking.

We decided to rent a car at the Eurocar booth to take a tour of some of the sites in the Mayan Riviera. We found the excursions were quite expensive and so decided to go on our own. I would highly recommend this option. We paid $90 for an automatic transmission, compact vehicle. We went to Chichen Itza and Tulum on our own. The driving was very easy and the sites, breathtaking. We would recommend taking the car for two days so that you can see Coba, Playa Del Carmen and check out some cenotes (we recommend Dojs Ojos, just a few km outside of the resort.)

We had an incredible time and recommend the resort to our family and friends. Thank you for the memorable and relaxing vacation!

We stayed here for 10 nights March/April. Before we arrived Claudia the rooms manager was very helpful, and during our stay she would check with us to make sure that everything was fine. We booked a penthouse suite with rooftop jacuzzi and were pleased we did. The jacuzzis lower down were not very private and were surrounded by lots of vegetation - and everything which lives in it!

The room was well appointed, but as some have mentioned there is not a lot of shelf space. We took a storage unit to hang in the wardrobe and this worked well. The room was cleaned well every morning, as requested and the fridge stocked with the items we requested. It was fun to sit in the jacuzzi with a drink from the bar and watch the sun going down. The rooftop terraces also have 2 sun loungers

The hotel was at 100% capacity for part of the time we were there but we were always able to get a table in the dining room (thank you Miriam, you were great). The buffet food was good, with a cooked to order pasta station and freshly made pizza every day. We ate once at Alux and enjoyed the change of scenery from the buffet. Each afternoon about 5.30 they brought out champagne and canapés.

While we were there they introduced a policy of not reserving sun beds on the beach. Hopefully this will continue and be enforced - prior to that some beds were reserved at 7am and not used for hours. Come on people, if you have a bed use it, if not let someone else use it!! The same goes for the beds round the pools

Sian Kaan has its own section on the beach with waiter service, and the staff work very hard supplying drinks. The negative to the beach is that it is close to the dolphin enclosure. I found this awful to deal with as they are such wonderful creatures kept in captivity and performing tricks for tourists while being so close to the ocean and freedom

Snorkelling was fairly good along the beach towards Coba and Akumal hotels, but bring water shoes as there are rocky areas going in

Trucks take you to the beach, the other hotels and the shopping centre, but we sometimes had to wait more than 20 mins for a truck to the beach after breakfast. Generally the drivers are obliging and will take you to where you want to go, even if their destination is different. Some people walked to the beach, but it is not an interesting walk and in the heat was too far for us to try

The hotel is over an hour from the airport so might not be ideal for a short break, but if you see it on offer for a good price it is worth a visit. The staff are a large part of what makes this a hotel people return to - it rained heavily one day for an hour or so and everyone including the managers got involved in mopping up the lobby and making sure no one slipped on the wet floor.

Sian Kaan is set in the jungle so be prepared to come across the odd snake etc - remember it is their home, you are only visiting. The bird life is amazing.

Room Tip: Penthouse with jacuzzi, best rooms. Request a room close to the lobby

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for taken the time to give us your feedback on Trip Advisor of your recent stay at Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an as your comments are valuable to us in order to continuously improve our service and standards.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your accommodation in the and that you were satisfied with the food, beach service, grounds, buffet and the service from Claudia and Miriam.

We appreciate the opinion that all of our present and future customers may have about a delphinarium in an hotel complex, some of them are against the dolphin captivity, others appreciate the new attraction being in hands of a professional organization, as an enterprise with experience in the building of a controlled habitat in specially created aquariums. The operation consists in a state-of-the-art life support system that changes the water in the pools every two hours and the dolphins are supervised, trained and taken care of by professional biologists. The dolphins have never known the open seas experience as they are born in captivity which is not an excuse or explanation to defend this activity, but information we want to give to our concerned customers.

Thank you once again for your time and comments and it will be a great pleasure to welcome you back at Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an.

Kind Regards,
