Beginning with the booking to the arrival, living arrangements, the staff, and everything in between, this is a fantastic organization as well as a property to visit.
This ocean-side villa fit our family of 11 perfectly. One family of 5 took the 3 bedrooms on the main floor while my husband and I plus a family of 4 took the 3 bedrooms on the second floor. The two floors are identical and include a living room and kitchen on each. And both had outstanding views. The swimming pool (a little cool for the adults this particular December) occupied the kids while the adults enjoyed cocktails and conversations on the upper deck. The villa is within walking distance of several reasonably priced restaurants and a small grocery. If you want a longer walk, you can reach Yal Ku lagoon for snorkeling. While the beach is not directly in front of the villa, it is steps away. A great place for a family vacation.
Casa Zama provided our family of 11 a wonderful venue to be active and relax. Right on the water, fantastic view of Half Moon Bay, and within walking distance of all the needed amenities and activities. The staff was helpful and friendly, and kept the villa clean and useable, both inside and out. Location was quiet and laid back, not like the chaos in Akumal. Good snorkeling right out front and on Akumal Beach. Not much sandy beach on HMB, so water shoes needed on the rocks. Rocky shoreline provided great opportunities for exploring cracks and crevices for sea creatures---just turn over the small rocks to find amazing things. Only negative was that the pool was too cool to enjoy. Bicycles suggested for transportation, as Akumal is vehicle "unfriendly" in regard to traffic and parking. Even golf carts have problems navigating those 2 things. Wifi and TVs worked great. 6 bedrooms and baths were super comfortable; 2 kitchens and living areas provided plenty of room to stretch out. We enjoyed La Buena Vida, La Taverna, Turtle Bay Bakery and Café, Lucy's Ice Cream, Imeldas Ecocina, and the many shops within walking distance. Yal Ku Lagoon is only a short walk away, but not worth it for experienced snorkelers---good for kids and beginners. Overall I would recommend Casa Zama for larger groups. Last year we were at an AI near PDC, and we decided that both the villa and the resort have pros and cons. Much depends on the personalities and favorite activities of the group. We also hired Chef Daveed to prepare our group a real Mexican meal in our kitchen. It was fun and delicious and provided left-overs for days. One day we booked an all day tour with Absolute Adventure Mexico for a jungle ATV ride, ziplining, and swimming in an open cenote. Highly recommended; the kids had a blast. It was a fantastic week on the Riviera Maya, especially since the weather back home was icy, cold, and snowy.
Casa Zama is exactly what we expected. The location is perfect. The AC works amazing in each bedroom. The grounds are spotless. The pool is perfect on a hot day. We were very close to La Buena Vida and visited it quite a bit. We love that place! The bikes came in handy. Lots of pool gear and sun screen left behind by other guests. Plenty of coffee, tea and spices there as well.
The most surprising was the staff. We had no idea we would be treated like royalty! We mainly used the one kitchen downstairs, as it was just more convenient and the upstairs was too hot. The first morning we made a huge breakfast. When Teresa came in and started cleaning up after us we were shocked. We felt guilty for making such a mess. We tried to help and she shooed us away. One person dried dishes and Teresa smiled at her. The housekeepers have 1 day off a week and every other day they are there taking great care of the guests and Villa.
Location is easy walking distance from Akumal beach and several restaurants. Very well maintained with daily maid and pool cleaning service.
We have rented Villas in Akumal 5 times and Casa Zama is the best having the prime location over the others. The staff was very attentive, accommodations excellent and the views quite colorful and relaxing. One unfortunate downside is the pool; it's not heated and in March was far too cold to enjoy - by enjoy, I mean even get into. (other villas have been similar in March because none of them are heated, which is unfortunate).
Anyway, all the restaurants are worth recommending with the exception of La Buena Vida, which is very close to Casa Zama. The food is marginal at best and the drinks are watered down; service is questionable. This review comes after 3 visits on separate trips, never again.
All in all Casa Zama is an outstanding retreat so much so that we've reserved it again in 2018. We've heard the Owner is considering having the pool heated so that would make this better than ever!
We would definitely recommend this house to friends, and would stay again. Clean, well cared for, great location. All 6 bedrooms have separate locks, making it easy to rent just part of the home. Beds are comfortable, rooms are large.
The bowls of fruit upon arrival were a bonus. 10 out of 10!
