Yal-Ku Lagoon is a stone's throw from Akumal Beach and is a good spot for beginning snorkelers early in the day (before the daytrippers from cruise ships or other resorts get there) or late in the day (after the daytrippers have left). Parts of the area still have a wonderful variety of fish and it is not an overpriced theme park (like Xel-Ha or Xcaret). The water is a mix of fresh and salt, so there are areas where it appears a bit "greasy", but by and large it is a good experience. They do not permit sunblock, so take a T-shirt to protect yourself from burning.

our taxi driver suggested we try this place as the ocean in akumal bay was very rough.

he told us that it was around 100 pesos each and once in the lagoon if we headed left we would see loads of fish. he was right.

we saw huge blue/rainbow parrot fish plus hundreds more other species. yes the water was a little murky when we first dived in but it got clearer the further left we went. we hired a private palapa which was excellent for keeping our kids in the shade. the palapa came we a table and chairs and was a very good size.

there are loads of rock formations under the water which had many tropical fish swimming around.

there is a small cafe on site which we didnt use.

you will need bio degradable sun lotion to swim here which you can purchase on site.

loved it so much that we will return next time in mexico.

remember to head far left to see the best fish.

Yal-ku Lagoon in Akumal is a great place to do some safe and easy snorkeling that is good for beginners and even more experienced folks. It costs around $9 US and you walk through a jungle/garden that has some interesting sculptures to a landing area that has big rocks to change into your fins and mask and a set of wooden steps that lead into the water. This is really like an inland lake with scores of tropical fish and islands of rocks throughout you can hold on to.

A really safe and fun snorkeling experience without current, waves or sharp coral to worry about.

Went to Yal-Ku after other guests at hotel said it was loaded with fish. The areas near the entry point were not too great and there were not a lot of fish and no coral. Areas under the mangrove, rocks near a distant sandy beach and closer to the outlet to the sea were better, but were a long swim from the entry point. We ended up wishing we had stayed at Akuma Beach and saved the money. One thing is that the weather was really bad and surf was up when we first arrived. The other guests said that Akumal was really choppy and visibility was affected early in the week so Yal-Ku is probably a good alternative in poor weather.

This has to be one of the most spectacular and easy snorkeling I have ever done. The water is crystal clear and filled with an endless array of colorful fish and occasional turtles.
