We have been to this fantastic hotel 3 times already, and our son is getting married there next Oct,2014 ( after previously holidaying here ) with a party of 24 of us staying in the Akumal section, so what more can one say about this hotel, except we highly recommend it. Our previous stays have always been in the Tulum section, though you can use the amenities in all 3 sections of this huge hotel complex. The staff were all great and very helpful, food fantastic, and drinks never ending with a huge variety of choice, even had champagne for breakfast !!
I can thoroughly recommend the Japanese, Brazilian and International al a Cart`e restaurants, Bedrooms are large though a little dated, but kept immaculately clean, and we loved the towel art left for us most days, my only grumble is having to pay for a room safe. The grounds are beautifully kept, as are all the communal areas, and the beach, well WOW, great snorkeling at the Akumal end of the beach. have recommended this hotel to family and friends, and have taken many back with us on our return visits to the hotel.

Absolutely the most fantastic setting, superb food, fantastic staff. During our two week stay we tried really hard to find a fault as we could not believe it was so good and we could not find one single fault. We would rate this 100% for every category. Seriously, you have to go!

Room Tip: We had two rooms with adjoining doors for a family of four.

My family just came back from 1 week vacation in Gran Bahia Principe Akumal resort. This is my 3rd trip to Maya Riviera this year so I usually have good idea what to expect from such AI vacations.
8 days before vacation we send an e-mail to resort asking for a room on the 3rd floor in the building 66 (we had Royal Golden package that assigns rooms closer to the beach). 2 days later we got an answer that they cannot guarantee rooms, but they’ll keep my request in mind. When we arrived to resort we found that we got exactly the room we requested – building 66, floor 3. I believe this was the best room in the entire GBP complex. This definitely was best room that we ever got in our travels over many years! Huge thank you goes to Vanessa from GBP helping us with our request! Having such a great room greatly helped us with our vacation enjoyment.
8 days before vacation we send an e-mail to resort asking for specific a la carte reservations. 2 days later we got our reply with restaurant reservation confirmation numbers. I love this concept where you can arrange restaurant reservations over the email – this is such a big time saver. Again thank you Vanessa from GBP for taking care of that for us. At the resort it took me about 2min for them to find my bookings and print confirmations.
I will spend most of my review time describing beaches of GBP Akumal.
When we were looking for vacation this summer, our first requirement was for hotel to have a lot of shade on the beach. From the pictures posted we saw that GBP has a lot of beach palapas. While on vacation I counted that just GBP Akumal part hotel has around 300 palapas! During our 1 week vacation we confirmed that you can get palapa at the beach at almost any time of the day, but main beach palapas are gone by around 8:30am.
GBP Akumal has 3 beaches (please check my attached images of 3 beaches):
“Beach 1”- this is the beach at the most south part of the hotel, in front of the building 66. This beach has about 100 palapas and its own bar in the middle of the beach. This is the quietest beach part with acceptable swimming and snorkeling. This beach has water access just at the most south part area and sand in the water has some small stones. We always saw palapas available on this beach.
Between “Beach 1” and “Beach 2” there is area were we saw few weddings. There is no water access from this area and there are no beach chairs in this area.
“Beach 2” is in the front of the Activites pool. This beach as about 80 palapas and water access, but most of the water was knee deep. In the north part of this beach water was up to waste deep. This was also very quiet beach and most of the days we saw at least few palapas available. No bar at the beach, but there is pool bar very close by.
Between “Beach 2” and “Main Beach” there is area with no water access but with many beach chairs, hammocks and palapas.
“Main Beach” is in front of the hotel lobby and is located between 2 docks. This is probably best part of the GBP Akumal beach. This beach has again maybe 100 palapas. There is a bar on this beach and by the pool very close to the beach. This beach is most “active” beach and we spend most of our time here. From about 10am to maybe 1pm they have music on this beach and stretches and some water dancing that are very well organized – I never saw so many people participate in such activities in any other hotel. Palapas at this beach were reserved starting around 7am and by 8:30 all of the were gone. This beach had many extra beach chairs not in the shade and many people just pulled them in the water.
North of “Main Beach” just past the dock starts “Coba beach” with lots of palapas. This beach also seemed very busy. After that there was water activity center with catamarans and then long GBP Tulum beach.
My biggest complain about resort would be not enough staff at the beach and main pool bars. First 6 days lineups for drinks were way too long. But last day I saw more people working in the bar and problem appeared to be solved.
Few more tips:
- In the mornings you can get coffee to go in the main theater area.
- We found that buffet dinner service was substantially (!!!) better at GBP Coba main buffet. Food was also better there.

This was a great hotel, and great all inclusive holiday. The staff were great and always helpful. The pool could have been cleaner and the entertainment at night didn't have much variety, but the food was fantastic and the variety of drinks were great.

I recently stayed at the GB Principe Akumal with my boyfriend for a weeks holiday and wish we had booked a little longer! I was a little apprehensive at the size of the place prior to booking so read many reviews on trip advisor and was quickly reassured that although big, the hotel was still lovely and the service brilliant.

Some people have commented on the roof leaking during rain. I'd like to point out with many of the hotels we stopped during our transfers many hotel foyers were open and had thatched roofs and rain getting in was unfortunately inevitable. I can say however that staff were quick to clean the floors so it shouldn't be an issue.

We stayed in the Gold Club and the rooms were of a good size and were spotlessly cleaned everyday. The mini bar was also stocked up daily. With the gold club you also have the opportunity to book 4 al a carte restaurants per week. With 15 restaurants to book from across the 3 hotels there was plenty to choose from and all of a good quality.

A trip I would definitely recommend is to go and swim with the Turtles at Akumal beach. You spend a good 50mins snorkelling in the sea and spotting turtles in their natural habitat. We also managed to spot a sting ray and other colourful fish. After that the guide then takes you to a local Cenote (underground cave) full of natural water where you can snorkel. Definitely a highlight of the trip!

All in all we had a fantastic holiday and I would definitely recommend to friends.

A couple of points to note which you may find useful:

- All residents of the 3 hotels can use all of the facilities. I didn't check prior to booking our holiday but check on the price per hotel (akumal, coba, tullum) as you may find one cheaper than the other but you can still use all of the same buffets, restaurants, pools etc

- although the hotel complex is huge, have a look at the buffets and pools in relation to your room. We stayed in the Akumal but the Coba pool and buffet was actually closer for us

- *Important point to note- maybe it was coincidence but we had real trouble withdrawing cash from the ATMs both at the hotel and the local shopping area (also within the complex). If it wasn't for me withdrawing some money before we left then we would have had an issue. Also, ATM in lobby only uses USD however you are recommended to pay for everything in Mexican Pessos. You may get stung on a double exchange rate by withdrawing in USD and asking lobby to then change to Pessos. To note there is an ATM which uses Pessos in the local shopping area if you can get it to work!!
