Apple Vacations, Akumal golden section, 4/24-5/1. Room was fantastic with wonderful view of sunrise out our balcony window (top floor building 65). Service was great all over; hats off to our maid, Sylvia, and waitpersons, Ana, Roberto and Ana Maria among others. Food was very good with a wide selection for all tastes. Only downside was the beach; sand was coarse and water had rocks of all sizes ( water shoes are a must) Would definitely return here, even with less than desirable beach. Would rate this below Riu Palace Mexico, but above the Iberostar Del Mar and the Valentin. Private transfer took about an hour. Bahia put on a wonderful BBQ for Apple guests one night; they went all out. Thanks to GBP Akumal for a wonderful vacation.

Room Tip: akumal golden bldg. #65 close to beach and 24 hr. snack bar

We stayed for two weeks at the GBP Akumal from 5-20 Feb 14. Firstly we had an excellent flight out with Thomson Airways although we did book the Premium Class which was worth it. Excellent meals and service.

We can't really fault anything during our stay. We were given a room on the ground floor although we did ask for a top floor room. We asked for a room change on booking in and this was no problem and we were moved the next day to another block. All our cases were moved for us so just a question of picking up the new room key. As everyone says this is a big resort with the three hotels but it is really as big or as small as you want to make it. The Akumal does get busy as it is near the beach but we found our niche between the gardens and the main beach and were quite happy as there was plenty of shade; close to the lobby bar and toilets. The room was a nice size with a four poster bed and views over the gardens where we could watch the wildlife early in the morning.

Food. The buffet restaurants are OK. We ate breakfast at the Akumaland and the Dolce Vita but went to the Coba buffet restaurant for lunch on occasions in addition to lunching at the Dolce Vita as it was much quieter (the Akumal buffet restaurant can get very busy for breakfast and lunch with a lot of people coming to the beach to get their spot and then coming in for a meal). We tried the Tulum buffet restaurant one evening and while it was a nice ambience we preferred the Akumal (although we think the Coba would be good as lunch was always excellent). Generally the food is good and what you would expect in an all inclusive resort. Yes it gets a bit repetitive but there is plenty to choose from - the only downside is the heat of the food which is never really hot.

We did use six of the a la carte restaurants while we were there: Mediterranean, Mikado, La Gran Tortuga Tequila, Frutos Del Mar and the Dolce Vita. All we can say about these restaurants is that the food was excellent in everyone and could not fault a thing. Good service plenty to drink and these were the best a la carte restaurants we have ever used on an all inclusive complex.

Drinks. Are plentiful and the staff will change ingredients in a cocktail if you prefer something else. Service can be slow in some bars but we had no major problems.

Resort. The gardens are well maintained and the staff really work hard (we even saw them weeding at night by torch light)! The transport is frequent but you soon learn they will often go the long way round to get to places (to pick up other people) and that you can actually walk to some of the other hotels quite easily. The beach is clean and there were plenty of loungers to choose from. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful.

Wildlife. Coati's are in abundance as well as the iguano's. I saw at least 40+ coati's running from one area to another. Plenty of birds: fly catchers, mocking birds(?), grackles.and the Yucatan Jay. Coati's do come up to you for food but if you don't feed them they soon go. Despite the signs about no feeding people still do it but we never saw it as a problem.

Overall all we found the GBP Akumal a very good resort and is an excellent destination for families.

My wife booked the holiday and we spent time reviewing the website and Thompson brochures but they really don't do this place justice. We stayed in the Akumal part of the resort and had adjoining rooms as we were a family of 5.
Firstly we were warmly received after our arrival by very friendly staff and escorted to our rooms. The whole site was immaculate and i really mean clean beyond anything i have ever seen before. The rooms were very clean as well and very comfortable with good airconditioning. The beds were comfortable and we had a good view of some trees and therefore wildlife.
The resort is huge and you jump on and of golf carts or converted pickups to get around, they are very useful but one thing i did note is that its always the next one you want even after 5 have gone past its still the next one so when this happens go and speak to the lobby staff and they will help. There are loads of restaurants but we spent most of our time in the buffet style ones, every day the food was different in my experience and there are chefs cooking all the time things to order. My children LOVED the buffet. One final thing to add to this short review, the staff are incredible and the hardest working people i have ever seen. The staff are the ones that do all the work, they are everywhere day and night from cleaning the roads, working on the gardens, repairing, clearing, they are amazing and so very friendly. Overall this place is amazing, truly... so my one moan is nothing to do with the hotel. We did have several issues with american tourists, not all obviously but there is a good amount of mid twenty americans who start doing shots from 8am in the morning and by mid day they are in the pool bar being very loud. The staff deal with them well but they do some serious drinking so be aware of where you sit if you wake a family. And finally anything not part of the all inclusive is expensive, so be aware.

When down on the beach make sure to go see Jose Vasquez at the COBA Beach Bar just on the other side of the pier. He was always cheerful and accurate on all the drinks he made. I was at the same resort five years ago and he was one of the only servers I have remembered. Thanks Jose for a great time yet again!

We stayed at Akumal in the golden rooms with our 19 month old baby, we got a free upgrade with First Choice.
Flew out on the dreamliner from Manchester which wasn't as great as First choice/thomsons let you believe.

This resort is massive and Akumal was overbooked as some of our friends got the "upgrade" to Sian Kaan, however they spent most of the time at Akumal as they said the atmosphere was a lot better and preferred to be near the beach.

Rooms: We were in block 47 which was a good location, near to the beach, lobby etc... We had a ground floor room as we had the pushchair with us and didn't want to be carrying it up and down the stairs. Beware that you can hear everything from upstairs, especially in the bathroom we could hear full conversations! The rooms were kept clean with little towel animals made each day and the mini bar was kept stocked up.
We paid extra to have the wifi in our room but it didn't work and the only place we seemed to be able to get wifi was in the lobby (where its free anyway) or on the beach.
We found the bed to be really hard

Grounds: the grounds are kept clean, every day you see people watering the gardens, cutting the trees back and sweeping up

Beach:The beach is a bit rocky in places, we spent most of our time at the right hand side of the beach as it was quieter here and had a little lagoon for the little one to play in. sea shoes could come in handy if you have sensitive feet!

Food: We had breakfast in the smaller buffet as found the food here to be better quality, the main buffet does become a bit repetitive and the food can be hit and miss on the temperature side. Had nice meals in the Arlequin and Dlce Vita, the Japanese was ok but nothing special.
The drinks appeared to be watered down and trying to get a decent cocktail was a nightmare.

The sun loungers could be a nightmare to get as people reserve them and then don't turn up until the afternoon if they turn up at all and it would be really helpful if someone could control the loud Canadians as they were at the beach bar downing tequila and then throwing up everywhere :( not something i really wanted my little one around.

Golden reception staff are really helpful especially Juan who really helped us when our little one caught foot and mouth, not sure if this was from the hotel or from Playa del carmen, just make sure you have travel insurance as the hotel doctor isn't cheap!

Room Tip: email the reception beforehand

Excellent hotel, great food and superb Ala carte restaurants especially the Brazilian and Japanese, make sure you are sitting on the show table. The only down fall of this hotel is the size (3 hotels in 1) and the constant hassle before you go into the buffet for time share, other than that you can't fault it. Rooms are a nice size, spacious and the maid service is excellent. All staff throughout the resort are extremely friendly.
You must go to coco bongos and visit xplor whilst staying in mexico. We also visited xcaret and xel ha, xplor was by far the best out of the 3 and you can't really do anything extra at the other two other than extras like swimming with dolphins, I would advise you to only visit one as all 3 are more a less the same.
A visit to Akumal beach is well worth it and is a five minute taxi ride away. We also paid extra to watch the mexican show in the hotel which wasn't worth it. Evening entertainment isn't great however the hacienda is worth a visit after 11pm. All in all a great trip to mexico and would definitely recommend it to others, there is something for everyone of all ages.
