First time at this resort at end of May. Took the first week to start finding our way round as its so big. Soon got the hang of using the buggies that take you around, they are great and you never have to walk far, especially good when we had 3 days of rain, although umbrellas are provided in the rooms. The beach is very gritty and lots of stones in the water, beach shoes are recommended. Very difficult to get a bed round the pool if you did not get there before 7,30 and so annoying that a lot of these reserved beds stayed unoccupied for a long time, think the hotel needs to sort that out.
We were moved from our room after 5 nights as our block of villas was getting renovated, was not too happy about this as they should not have put us there in the first place. However we did get an upgrade to villa 65 which overlooked the sea and was lovely, also it was next 24 hour snack bar which was handy as the other bars all closed at 11pm which was just a little too early. We booked a la cartes in reception day after arriving. Favourite was Japanese show table, we also went to Brazilian restaurant which is good if you like meat, portofino Italian restaurant and Le Gourmet which again was lovely. We preffered these restaurants to the buffet as always found it busy and hot, we did go frequently to Tulum to the buffet as that was more open air and cooler, it was so easy just to get on the buggy and go up to Tulum, it felt like having a night out.
Never went to evening entertainment as we tended to eat later and entertainment was finished by time we came out of restaurant.
We used the collectivos a couple of times which you can get just outside the hotel, small buses that are really cheap, we went to Tulum and it was about 30 pesos each. There's a beautiful beach to visit at Tulum , Paradise beach, about half an hour walk from the Tulum ruins, well worth a visit.
Staff at hotel are mainly very helpful and friendly especially bar and restaurant staff who work very hard. The maid kept the room immaculate.

Room Tip: Villa 65 or 66 overlook the sea

Reviewed 14 June 2014

We booked this hotel through First Choice in the UK and this was our first trip to the sunny (most days!!) shores of Mexico.

Arrival & Check-In,
On arrival we learned that our room had been upgraded to the Royal Golden Bahia Principe area of the resort. This gave us a separate smaller reception area to which we had to make our way round to on the local bus/tram/golf cart network and our cases were not far behind. Check-In was smooth and efficient and we were presented with a Margarita each. We were allocated room 6406 which is a ground floor room.

Check-Out,
This was a simple process, we went to the small lobby at Royal Golden the concierge staff happily helped us to get a golf cart round to the main Akumal Lobby, we did have a small charge on the room as we had used the excellent and efficient hotel laundry service and placed a local call during our stay.

Room,
We were greeted with an enormous room for our 2 week stay. It had everything you could need with Cable TV, Sitting area, Mini Fridge (stocked daily) and a good sized bathroom. Our maid Gregoria kept our room spotlessly clean throughout our stay and provided us with a different towel animal everyday (a highlight was to try and guess what animal we would be presented with), we did have a slight flooding issue in the bathroom on day 3 which was quickly solved. Due to the high frequency of guests, firm mattresses are used by the hotel, although our bed did have a mattress topper, from our prospective the bed was still firm and if you do not like a firm mattress this could prove to be an issue.

Food and Drink,
Here at this hotel there is one thing for sure and that is you will not starve for the duration of your stay. There are more restaurants and snack bars on this complex than you can shake a stick at! All the meals we had were excellent in all the restaurants although sometimes some items could be a tad cold which here in the UK we are not used too. The restaurants that stood out for us were the Mikado (Where we ate twice and the show table was very good), The Mexican, The Brazilian and the Dolce Vita Italian restaurant (where we had breakfast most days). The drinks supplied were also very good and you will never go thirsty that's for sure.

Bar, Beach, Entertainment and Pools
Around this hotel there are many pools where we are sure you will find your own spot whether you travel with children or a couple for the size of the hotel complex it is easy to find a quiet spot. There are so many to choose from you are spoiled for choice. The hotel has it's own private beach which is about nearly 2 miles long. There are bars and activities up and down the beach and many man made coves to swim and snorkel with the fish. The entertainment goes on all day and there shows in the evening to see as well. There are many areas to have an evening drink and if you like the nightlife, you can go up to the clubs at the Hacienda and dance till dawn. The hotel complex provide a traditional Mexican Night on a Thursday, this is held at the Hacienda, to go to this show it costs approx $15 per adult (not sure of childrens price) we never went as we felt this was an unnecessary entertainment charge at an All Inclusive hotel.

You won't be bored and children wont be either with the 'Bahia Scouts' providing activities and entertainment for "children" of all ages all day long. We enjoyed the piano bar at Akumal Lobby, where most evenings live music can be found. We only saw one show and that was the circus skills evening.... WOW!!!!!

Staff,
This is a big hotel with about 1000+ staff at any one time. Most are genuine and friendly and will help you and serve you the best they can. At this hotel you do not really get to see the same people most days as it is so big but we were fortunate to meet Sebastiana in the Akumal lobby piano bar and Elena in the Akumal main restaurant who were both very friendly. You don't get the personal touch that you might find in a smaller hotel here because it is big but as I said you can not fault most of the staff.

Grounds,
This hotel complex is stunning. It is kept immaculately clean by the groundsmen who do not stop day or night on keeping the hotel and grounds lovely. The internal areas are also kept clean by the cleaners who work day and night. Superb!

In Summary,
This is one massive hotel!!!!! Apparently there can be around 10,000 people on site at any one time, although it does not feel crowded. The hotel is actually called the Gran Bahia Principe Riviera Maya and it is made up of several parts. They are the Akumal, Coba, Tulum and Sian' Kaan and the Don Pablo private villas and golf course on the land side of the main highway. We were sold the Akumal site in the holiday brochure but this is one part of a big, very, very big hotel complex. To get you around they have their own in hotel transportation system which after a day is easy to use.

We personally like smaller hotels and would not choose a hotel this big. Having said that the hotel did not feel too crowded. We would not choose this hotel again, but that is no reflection on the hotel, that is just personal taste. Overall a great stay for families, couples and groups of all ages.

Room Tip: Blocks 65, 66 and 67 if you can get them!!! as they have a sea view!!!!! Book Al a Carte restaurant...

My friends stayed here (I stayed in Siann Kann) but I had the chance to use all of the ammenites to all 3 different hotel- not the other way around; the only advantage of staying in Siann Kann).. as a guest here in Akumal- you cannot go to Siann Kann and dine at any of the Siann Kann's restaurants or ammenities - but you can visit Coba and Tulum hotels.
The hotel has everything here in one place. nice big spacious clean rooms, which I stayed a lot! - they upgraded to the GOLDEN club so they can have 24/7 room service.). room service is free in Siann Kann
Very nice swimming pools and very clean beach front too. closer to the snack bars,-open 24/7; so if you are hungry while swimming its just a walking distance.
Entertainments and nightly shows available nearby and its just in your own hotel premises... no need for a shuttle not unless you also wanna see other shows from Coba or Tulum Hotels..
I had the chance to indulged in their Bahia Spa- a lot cheaper rates/charges from Siann Kann. :)
reserve your ala carte dinners upon arrivals so you will have space.. all restaurants are very good.. I enjoyed it..
I did enjoy my stay here and will definitely stay here the next time.

My family consisting of my husband and I and our 4 and 7 year old children recently spent two weeks at this fabulous resort. We had an absolutely lovely time and the facilities were brilliant. The resort was kept very clean and the grounds were very well maintained. My children adored Brenda in the childrens club and they were keen to attend every day from the minute the club opened until it closed. All of the entertainment team were brilliant with the children both throughout the day and also during the evenings. Merce was their first contact with the entertainment team and she made the children feel at ease immediately. The whole team were very good with the children and the majority of the team knew my childrens name which made them feel like they were "buddies" and which made their memories of the holiday very special indeed.
My main fault with the resort is that the main bars close too early. Although you can still get drinks from the snack bar i would have very much preferred for the lobby bars to stay open slightly later. The evening shows were very good however during the second week of our holiday the shows were a repeat of the first. A variety of shows during the two weeks would have been much better. I very much appreciated the availability of branded drinks and this was a nice surprise as it was not advertised in our holiday brochure.
On a whole we had a fabulous holiday, although they are improvements which could be made this would not stop my family from returning with our young children.

Our check in experience was very good. The complex was massive, it still didn't seem over crowded. There were lots of things to do and see. The tram cars came around about every 15 minutes and the drivers were helpful and friendly. The complex was very well maintained, clean and everywhere you looked was pleasant to the eye. The beach was a bit rocky and the water in front of the man made barrier was quite shallow. Would have liked to play in the waves. Now we get to the food. There is massive ammounts of food available. Our package had three meals at the ala carte restaurants provided. The Dolce Vita was the worse and made us sick. The Oasis was less than editable. The Frutos Del Mar was a seafood restaurant and was very bad. All the buffets were very good and there was plenty of variety. The buffet is the only place I would eat in the future.
The check out was very unpleasant. We were told to leave the room keys and the safe lock at the desk where we checked in. We did that and went to the main Akumal lobby for our exit pass and were told we violating their policy for checking out. The guy at the desk was very rude which made me and my wife very angry. I think the biggest problem was communications. They need some people who are more fluent in english.

Room Tip: Good luck on getting an ocean view.

My sister and I stayed here from the 12/05 until 26/05 and overall had a really good time, there were just a few things that could have been better.

Check in was quick and easy and bags arrived at our room 2 minutes after we got there.

Room was basic but very nice and spacious. After reading other reviews I was expecting the bed to be as hard as rock, but surprisingly it was just as comfortable as my bed at home! We stayed in villa 49 and were close to everything, the lobby, pools and beach, for us we couldn't have been in a better position. Didn't have much of a view, but that didn't matter to us. The maid was brilliant and left us towel animals most days.

Grounds were immaculate and we noticed all the ashtrays around the resort were stamped with the Bahia logo, that's attention to detail!

The staff were all really friendly and helpful, they all work really hard and long hours, especially in the restaurants.

The buffet restaurant did have a good selection but as said before in other reviews, you do get a bit sick of it after the first week. We had no problem booking the a la carte restaurants on arrival using the Bahia app. Got all the restaurants we wanted at decent times. We went to the Mexican in Tulum (Tequila) the Seafood in Akumal (Frutos del Mar) and the Mediterranean in Coba which were all very good and would recommend them all. The Mexican was our favourite. We also went to the Gourmet in Akumal (Arlequin) but we didn't find the food there as good as the rest. The service in all of them was excellent. We had also booked la dolce vita in Akumal but cancelled after finding out it was a buffet.

The snack bar was OK, but at night everything was made to order and there was only one poor guy cooking it all, so at times we had to wait over half an hour before we got our food.

The entertainment during the day was very good, lots of things going on like volleyball, darts, aqua aerobics, but if you didn't fancy taking part the entertainment team didn't pester you unlike in other resorts I have stayed. We really enjoyed the beach party. The professional shows at night weren't really our thing, found them a bit boring, we preferred it when the animation team got people up from the audience to do silly things. There was always live music on in another bar and it was even nice just to sit outside at the lounge bar where they played more chilled music. We liked going to the hacienda later on at night to watch the live music and dancing. We only went to the disco once but didn't really like it as it was too hot and stuffy and the dj didn't even play 60 seconds of one song before moving on to the next.

The animation team were great, especially Alain who would make a point to come and chat to us every day. They are all really friendly and work hard to make sure you are having a good time.

We loved the waiter service for drinks at night, we never had to leave our table and were never long with an empty glass. The cocktails were far better at night than from the pool bars during the day.

The golf carts were very reliable and we never had to wait long for one. Sometimes they would go out of their way to take us somewhere even though it wasn't part of their route.

The things that could have been better for us:

There wasn't enough sunbeds around the pool. Some days we would go down at 7.30 and they would all be taken, it's crazy. We had to start getting up early just to get one, but we actually used ours. We noticed that people didn't start to appear until well after 9 and all day only about 30% of the reserved sunbeds actually had people on them. We had no problem getting a sunbed on the beach though.

The wifi: You are meant to get an hour free in the lobby per day but the connection is poor and kept cutting out, I think this is so that you buy the premium wifi. You can buy a 24 hour pass from the shop but it is 150 pesos and you can only use it on one device! You can buy weekly/2 weekly premium wifi but you have to use a credit card.

The hotel shop is extortionate, we had to buy some sun cream because we ran out and it was over 20 dollars, but because we were paying in pesos we ended up paying way more because they use their own exchange rate. Next time we will definitely take dollars rather than pesos. It was also 9 dollars for a bag of crisps.

The safe: I think it's ridiculous that you have to pay to keep your valuables safe, 50 pesos per day! Surely that should be free, it's meant to be all inclusive.

One day my sister was very ill and couldn't get out of bed so hadn't eaten all day. I went to the buffet but they said I couldn't take anything out to her and she would have to order room service. I don't see why we should have to pay extra, again it's meant to be all inclusive.

Overall we did have a great time and would probably return if the price was right.
