“Very good resort with superb surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

The Grand Bahia Principe is a big complex with 5 different areas, which I’ll refer to as hotels, or 4+1 if you will – the Akumal one has a “prime” sub-area (no difference from the main Akumal hotel, where we stayed). Akumal and Tulum hotels are located at the beach, walking distance. Coba and, especially, Sian Khan (which is to the opposite side of the highway, inland) are not. If you stay at these latter two hotels either you take a small bus to the beach (5,10 minutes respectively) or be ready for walking (for Coba only, since the walk from Sian Khan is unfeasible).

For wild life lovers like ourselves this resort has an excellent location: beach front with wide reef ahead brimming with tropical marine life including rays, barracudas, turtles, sand sharks, all sorts of reef fish, a paradise for a snorkeler. Note it’s not a rocky beach, you have sandy areas too. Also, I’m writing about the Akumal beach and its reef which is much nicer than the adjacent Tulum beach, without natural reef break and thus full of artificial waves breakers – huge sand bags. These are not unpleasant in my view, but render the Tulum beach a few cuts below the Akumal one, just 2-5 mins walk. There are a few sand bags at the Akumal beach as well but I found them very well integrated and not impacting the natural value of the beach itself. The gardens are superbly maintained and are very well integrated with the surrounding mangrove vegetation. Coatis, badgers, squirrels, iguanas, exquisite birds, among others, are your regular pals when you hang around the resort.

I am not a pool lover, especially with that entire ocean out there, just jumped in for 5 mins once for my younger kid. But, if you are, you’ll be delighted with the pools area.

Service is very good in general and staff is friendly and efficient. Restaurant buffets are rich, offering a wide range of alternatives. In what concerns a la carte I recommend the Italian; Mexican is good, seafood one is a cut below. There is one 24-h snack bar on each hotel which may be handy. Beach bars are open 10-17h and offer a variety of alternatives. There is no air conditioning in areas other than rooms, just ceiling fans - for me this was not a problem at all.

Rooms are spacious, very clean and very well equipped and maintained. Ours was in the ground floor, which I found good, and well located (1 min walk to front desk / buffet, 2 min walk to the beach). The complex offers 3 floors buildings with 6 rooms per floor. Depending on where exactly your room is (check my note on the 4 “hotels” of the complex) your walk will be longer (most probable) or shorter than what I indicated for my room.

I am a scuba diver and snorkeler for 20 years, have been around the globe, and it’s hard to imagine a better beach with front reef than this one for a one week vacation with kids.

IMPROVEMENT NEEDED:
There is, however, one aspect needing urgent improvement: control of plastic waste on the surroundings, beach front, and the ocean. It’s dismaying to snorkel and keep finding plastic debris floating on the reef, where turtles dwell and may feed upon the plastic presuming it’s food, and die because of it. This is not fiction (I’m putting my marine biologist hat on). Many more plastic bins and recycling sites are needed within the resort and, especially, along the beach front. Educational campaigns to users (clients) are needed flagging up how important it is to preserve the natural environment the resort is embedded in. Avoid use of plastics on the beach, adopt the “hard plastic”, recycled, glasses, asking for their return. Launch campaigns where clients are encouraged to clean the beach front on organized initiatives. Finally, more man effort is needed from staff cleaning the beach front, sand, ocean, in end of days, making sure every single plastic and other debris are removed.

As a local leader, the resort must play an active role developing and adopting sustainability policies along the lines I leave above. This will place the Piñero group ahead of everyone else on this regard and set the bar much higher for others on sustainable tourism.

First the positives - reception was excellent, fast check in and friendly. Lots of choices for pools. AC in the room worked 24/7. Buffet was clean and well varied selection. 24/7 snack shack at Talum was helpful.

Negatives - Ants in the room and all around the pool deck. Room appear spear shop worn. Raccoons dominate the snack shack in the evening - someone will get bitten. Ceiling leaked in bathroom from room above. Our floor got very wet due to shower door set up. All inclusive did not cover a room safe, wifi that worked or the par 3 golf. The premium wifi was expensive and only worked near the lobby - not pool side or in your room. Buffet got a little boring after seven days. Booking special dinners was impossible as everything earlier than 9:00 was already booked when we got there. Best pool chairs are "towel reserved" by 07:00 in spite of signs. Staff washed the deck chairs overnight in the lower party pool (with the swim up bar). Too few staff for table service during evening shows.

Just back from this smashing place this morning and had to write straight away. Upon arrival we went to Golden Principe to check in, have baggage taken to room and offered a welcome drink. Staff were fantastically helpful after what was quite a tiring journey.

On arrival at our room (block 61) we were delighted with the cleanliness and size, sea view would have been preferred but hey ho did not spoilt things at all, they do say this cannot be guaranteed! Minibar fully stocked with everything one would need which was done daily...fizzy drinks, ample water, beer, crisps and chocolate. Bathroom was of a good size with towels provided on a daily basis also bathrobes and slippers.

Next we ventured to the pools and beach. The white sands were. Sight for sore eyes, beach beds were plentiful and the sea was of the clearest blue I have ever seen where you were met by beautiful tropical fish swimming around your feet. Snorkels are a must, oh and beach shoes as there is quite a lot of coral, again beautiful. The beaches provide swing bars, entertainment by way of zumba lessons, games, aqua areobics etc etc. I did participate in zumba and aqua areobics which is different in 110degree heat :0)......The pools are like walking into a lovely warm bath, virtually impossible to keep them cold in the heat of the sun......ahhhhhhh bliss to say the least... Pool bars, activities for those who want it, or merely chill in the heat of the day.

You will find little animals dandering around.....coatie's are a cross between a monkey/anteater/raccoon, cute little beggers but greedy, you are asked not to feed them but to be honest they are hard to resist, careful of their little claws and sharp teeth though. Others you will see are those which resemble giant guinea pigs, very timid and hide away alot Nd of course gheko's everywhere of all size, again beautiful. The one's you may not like are of course the infamous mosquito's......recommended to wear a mosquito band to keep the buggers at bay..

Our first morning brought the welcome meeting......thompson rep Ryan is a very informative young man who will talk you through everything you need to know, very friendly and helpful and a credit to Thompson/1st choice.

You may be staying at Akumal but you will also be able to use the other hotels in the resort for restaurants, bars, pools and internet. 1hours free internet per day per lobby. There are little buses which run very regularly to shuttle people to the other lobby's

The main restaurants have a great variety of foods for breakfast, lunches and dinners plus you have the opportunity to book A la carte restaurants throughout your stay. Ladies bring a fan as the restaurants are quite hot as they do not have air conditioning. Thus I think is mainly due to the height if the thatched ceilings.....

We did not take trips but if thus is your thing there are many and Ryan will explain them all. We did however go to playa del carmen which is one if the nearest towns, lively place where you can purchase everything and anything....

The staff in all the hotels on this resort are friendly, courteous and cheery, all willing to help.

The only thing which marred our holiday and I do not point a finger at all people from the USA where 3 individuals in particular at the beach swing bar who had no consideration for others or children nearby....I am no prude but their language was disgusting to say the least. I did ask that they refrain which almost turned into world war 3 but as mentioned before the lovely staff had them swiftly removed :0)

My only little gripe would probably be the rooms are not very sound proof and if you have rowing neighbours you will hear every word....thankfully ours were italian so we could not understand. A hint would maybe be to block off the vent in the bathroom which is where alot of the noise/conversations can be heard.

Thank you bahia principe Akumal for a wonderful very memorable break from the day to day grind. We will definitely visit again. :0)

Room Tip: Beach views can be requested but are not guaranteed, this will not spoil your holiday

Check in
Stayed here for 2 weeks end of June/beginning July. Very quick check in, we were offered a free upgrade to sian kaan for the 2 weeks. I asked what the catch was and he said there wasn't, it was a one day offer and we could have it for free. I decided things like this don't usually come free and I had booked the Akumal because that's where i wanted to stay. The person at check in then became very abrupt and annoyed that we hadn't taken up this offer.

Room
Very specious, aircon and ceiling fan. Whirlpool bath was a nice touch, toiletries etc. Our mini fridge wasn't working, we reported this twice over a few days and it still wasn't fixed. Only after reporting it to the thomson rep did it get fixed. However the new fridge was locked so we couldn't get it open! We reported this and were told somebody would be there the following day; slightly annoying as we would have liked a drink that night. We don't drink full fat coke, you get 2 of these and one diet coke. I left a note asking for 2 diet cokes (even wrote it in Spanish) but we didn't get 2. I then left a tip, the tip was taken but no extra diet coke.

Service
The first week was pretty bad. You had finished your breakfast before being offered coffee or finished your evening meal before getting your drinks. This was much improved in the 2nd week. The bar with the swings was also very slow and the barman quite rude at times. No concept of serving people in the order they arrived.

Restaurant
The buffet restaurant was nice although very hot at times. There was plenty of choice, even fussy eaters would find something. I have never seen so much breakfast!
We ate at the Mexican and this was fantastic. Have a Mexican coffee at the end. Compliments to Sebastian who made a fantastic effort.
The Italian was ok, food wasn't fantastic but still nice.
Brazilian was very good, the chicken was so tender and tasty. It was nice when they came to he table to carve the meat.
Don Pablo was beautiful food and very good service. Would recommend all of these.

Beach and pool
Beach was lovely, we sat on the part of the beach opposite the fish restaurant at akumal. Plenty of sun beds at all times. Really good snorkelling just passed the wedding section. We wore water shoes due to the amount of sea urchins.
Pool was clean but very warm. The pool bar was very good and were always served in order you arrived. The pool with the bar was much quieter than the other one.

Evening entertainment
Was ok. A few shows were excellent, the team of male dancers were fantastic and the magician was also very good. The Michael Jackson was unfortunately pretty poor, I have never seen such limp impersonator.
They had the football on everyday which was great, plenty of screens to watch the games.

We had an invite though our door to receive a free gift. When we enquired about this we were told we had to sit through a presentation to get this gift. It was 90 minutes of trying to be sold a time share, at no point we were going to buy into this, but we sat and listened for a free beach bag and tequila.

The golf carts run all the time throughout the day so you can always get to the other sites without waiting too long.

All in all we had a very enjoyable stay and would return here if the service improved.

My wife and I have just spent two weeks at this lovely hotel .After a 10 hour flight from Manchester the airport at Cancun is a little frustrating with a form for customs to be filled in as well as the form we had filled on the plane , but after this the transfer was pretty good taking only 1 hour and 15 mins to get to the hotel check in was quick and the margarita was welcome. I had e-mailed in advance requesting a third floor villa near the lobby which is exactly what we got we were in villa 5121 from June 27th until July 11th and the room was perfect for us we had two minor problems which were rectified immediately after notifying reception indeed the biggest asset this hotel has is the wonderful staff everyone from the guys who clean the beach right up to the restaurant managers are so friendly are cheerful. The food in the buffets is excellent you can never be stuck for choice, we used 4 of possible 6 a la cartes available to us as we were only a couple we seemed to get the reservations we wanted without any bother , we booked the Italian and the Brazilian restaurants for the 1rst week and later in the week we booked the oasis and the harlequin ( the best for steak ) for the 2nd week. The pool beds do get taken up by about 9 am which won't be a problem for the Brits as you will be up early at least for the 1rst few days due to the time difference .The beach is a bit rocky and the sand a wee bit gritty in places but there are plenty of beds as we prefer the pool it was not an issue for us. To finish I have to mention my only complaint which is the early closing of the bars , there is a lovely outdoor bar just between the pool and reception area which enjoys a nice evening breeze and has live music but it opens at 6 pm and closes at 10pm there are no villas nearby so I don't know why it can't open a little later as the main entertainment area is busy and get a bit hot we preferred to sit in Bar Pakal which is cool and they serve nice cocktails but this closes at 11pm and after a while they switch the air conditioning off so you have to leave if you want a drink after 11pm then you have to go to the 24hr snack bar or the disco at the hacienda. That said we had the drinks available are amazing with johnny walker j and b and jack Daniels whisky and Smirnoff and finlandia vodka the best gin available to AI guests was Oso Negro.Although we tipped some of the bar staff and waitresses I did not feel under any pressure to do so the service was excellent considering the bars were busy during the World Cup games which were shown on big screens. We had a great holiday and met some lovely people want we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone

Our family (consisting of 4 adults ages 39, 45, 63 and 65 and 2 kids ages 12 and 8) tremendously enjoyed two weeks at Akumal from June 27 to July 11. We stayed in the golden section of the resort and for us the golden upgrade was totally worth it. However I can see why some people would say it is not worth to upgrade. It is all about your priorities when on vacation. If you want to be close to the main lobby and you prefer to be constantly entertained, be in the center of events and you do pool chair reservation then you wouldn't benefit from the upgrade.

Here is what made it worth for us to be in the golden section:

1) Proximity to the ocean and rooms with an ocean view
2) Nice, quiet beach area, which is not exclusive to golden section guests but it is far enough from the main beach that very few visitors venture there
3) Use of Dolce Vita restaurant for breakfast and lunch (instead of the main buffet that is further away)
4) No entertainment, as we never participate in it anyway and to us not having it is a plus :)
5) Turn down service. It was very enjoyable to get back to the room to find it all ready for the night
6) Separate check in and check out, that was super quick and efficient
7) Outstanding service we received, but this may be not be limited to the golden upgrade as the service was consistently great everywhere on the resort
8) One extra a la carte restaurant per week. We found restaurants to be extremely good and the food to be very high quality.

Also, if you like a small resort feel, you will get it in the golden section.

All staff at the resort works extremely hard! You can tell they take a pride in their work. From the reception (thank you Francelia, Julia, Frank and Ricardo), to the waiters (thank you Javier, Arsenio, Zaryania and Josue from Dolce Vita for your outstanding service (I know I am butchering the names and I apologise for it :)), Maria who one day was scrubbing the steps to the restaurant that you could literally eat of it after she was done!), to the men cleaning the golden beach every day (who did an amazing job keeping the beach clean of seaweed, rocks and garbage, huge thank you for that!), to the cleaning staff
(thank you for keeping our rooms 6721 and 6216 spotlessly clean!). All of you made our stay magnificent! Thank you so very much!

Rooms:
We had two rooms in villa 67 (with an ocean view) and villa 62 (with the garden view). When booking we requested both rooms to be in one building, on the top floor and with an ocean view, however we understand that pretty much EVERYONE will be requesting the same and as much as we were hoping that our request will be accommodated we were fully aware that this will be based on availability. We were half lucky and we got one of the rooms in the desired location :) However when we asked whether we can exchange the other room to the same building we were offered to come next day and see the room that will become available in our villa 67. By the next day my parents fell in love with their villa 62 that we cancelled the move :) The rooms are very spacious and clean. There are some signs of aging but nothing really worth mentioning as this was expected. We had issues with air conditioner and the fridge but all it took to fix was a quick call to the customer service and it was fixed momentarily.

Food:
We ate all our breakfasts and lunches at Dolce Vita. It does not have the selection of the main buffet but it had everything we needed. For breakfast we enjoyed freshly made omelettes and eggs with bacon and of course fruits that are so amazing there, papaya especially! For lunch we loved the soups and freshly grilled chicken with spinach salad and fresh guacamole and salsa. There were also selection of different breads, pasta, fish, salad stuff, cheeses, cold cuts, yogurts, cereals, desserts etc. Everything we tried was very tasty.

Main buffet has so many choices. People who complain about the food being bad must be eating nothing but mcdonald's and their taste buds are damaged by high MSG consumption. I wanted to count how many dishes the main buffet has but it was too many and I was on vacation, so counting was too much work but it was no less than at least a hundred. You won't go hungry for sure!

The a la carte restaurants were OUTSTANDING! During our two week stay we went 7 times to a la carte restaurants twice in Dolce Vita, twice in Frutos del mar, twice to Don Pablo and once to Tortuga. I regret not trying Arlequin, as the menu looks great. Our favourite was Don Pablo, least favourite Tortuga. If you never been to a Brazilian steakhouse in MIami or Brazil you will enjoy Tortuga, we are just too spoiled when it comes to Brazilian steakhouses.

The beach:
We spent all our time at the golden beach which was great! It never had shortage of the beach loungers. You just need to know where to enter the ocean as in some parts the bottom is very rocky. Enter where the wave breaker is. It is nice and sandy there. Bring your snorkeling equipment as there are lots of fish to see. We were lucky to see a barracuda! The beach has a bar. I loved that it played Mexican/Latin music, vs pool that always played top 40 which I do enjoy here in Canada, but prefer something different on vacation.

The golf cart transportation is fun, but we only used it to go to visit Coba or Tulum. You can walk within Akumal to any place, it is not as huge as some people describe it.

Our kids did dolphin rides and they absolutely loved it! Someone mentioned in the earlier review that the dolphinarium looks depressing, this is so not true! We watched staff checking all the dolphins before the opening and we were so impressed by the care these dolphins get. The animals looked pretty happy to us and seemed to enjoy themselves. The trainers looked very professional and passionate about their animals.

The only suggestion I would have for the management is to discontinue room service. It takes no more than couple of minutes to walk to the 24 hour snack bar where all the room service food is delivered from. But the left at the door dirty plates create unnecessary issues with coatis coming to eat the left overs creating a big mess for the staff to clean after and an unpleasant experience for the guests who have to see all the mess.

All in all this is a great resort that would be hard not to enjoy. It is not four season's 5 star but you are not paying four season's prices either. To us it was 5 star experience and we had an amazing stay! We will definitely be back and I would recommend this resort to anyone!

Room Tip: room 6721 is a corner room with an ocean view. Room 6216 is a corner room and has a garden view and...

A wonderfull place for a honeymoon. The staff is very helpfull and the hotel conditions are fantastic. The room has very good conditions and the ambiance very romantic. The transport system inside the hotel is very well projected, we didnt waited more than 5 min for a little train.

Room Tip: Closer to the beach, but more expensive.
