Stayed at this hotel for a two week period July- August 2014 and the quality of the service was great. The only reason why it does not get a 5 star because it was a let down in a couple of areas. The cleanliness of the grounds, facilities, and room was excellent. The hotel had all the brand names drinks this was great not to see a hotel penny pinching in this area. There a wide variety of foods in the buffet restaurant - the only complaint was that some of the meats were tough or chewy, and the bacon was done to a crisp - so much that trying to pick up with a fork would send pieces all over the place . Staff were polite and helpful and the activities organised - in fact this organise had organization done to a tee. Other than the overcooked meats the only other complaint was that its 'no topless' bathing was not enforced - although the majority of guest adhered to the notices there were 3 topless women who decided to parade themselves along the beach regardless of the rules and children and this was very off putting. I was initially when booking the hotel concern about the size of the hotel but it did not feel like a massive complex plus it was great to be able to use the other facilities of the other hotels on the site.

This was a family holiday with my wife and travelling with my eldest daughter, her husband and four children, ages 15 , 13, 8 and 7 years. Due to the size of party we took three rooms all close to each other in the same building. This was an all inclusive holiday booked through 1st Choice. Why so far you may ask, but apart from a main holiday, my daughter wanted to renew her wedding vows - on the beach !!!. The wedding booking was done direct with the Bahia Principe saving some money by going direct. Flying out from Manchester we took the new Dream Liner which was an incredible and most enjoyable experience. Flight time was around 9 hours. Transit time to the complex site was approx 1 hour. The Bahia Principe "Complex" is made up of four sites, Akumal (the one we stayed on), the Coba much larger and more in-land but with a children's 'water park", the Tulum and a fourth inland sporting an 18 hole golf course (which we did not visit).. I believe the Akumal to be the best, quieter , lovely pool complex and close to the white sands of the beach. The design of the sites is such you do not realise the large area covered, due to the clever use of forestry. Getting from the accommodation to the main restaurant or other sites is via the free golf buggies that run every 15-minutes. The sites are maintained to a very high standard and are spotlessly clean. Being in a tropical area you do see quite frequently the roaming lizards and other furry animals which are all quite harmless and nice to see. The sea coastline is very nice and lovely to swim in. Free snorkelling equipment and Free Kaiaking is available on the beach. Our accommodation was superb, with air con (you need this in July) and cleaned every day with fresh towels. The main buffet restaurant used for breakfast yielded a superb range of foods every day and evening. We took the chance to book into the different alla-carte restaurants which are located on the three complexes, Akumal, Coba and Tulum. As we were there for 14-nights, we were able to book into 7 of these including two Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean , and Brazilian !! All were excellent with respect to quality of food and service. Going in July (due to school holidays) means you have to be prepared to put up with hot sun and high humidity. It's probably one of the best resorts and holidays we have had and would book again, but go in February or November when the climate is cooler.

Room Tip: Our main rooms 7813 and 7816 were on the second floor, of the three storey building and near to a ni...

We stayed 1st August - 11th August 2014. This is a really lovely hotel although vast and spread out as three hotels that guests can use all facilities. We stayed at the Akumal which is on the beach but all three hotels of excellent standard. Very clean and attentive staff even though hotel was full we didn't have to wait long for drinks or food.
There's lots of nice added value things here such as free kayaks and catamarans which you get free for an hour. Its very hot in Mexico and only the bedrooms have air conditioning which makes the restaurants a little hot so be prepared to sweat a lot. The a la carte restaurants are very good especially the show cooking at the Japanese.
the pool areas are lovely as is the beach area but be prepared to get up early if you want a bed by the pool although beds on the beach are available until a little later. There's plenty of wild life with lizards and racoons freely wandering which makes it interesting for British travellers. The 24 hour snack bar was a nice touch after a night at the casino or night club although a little disappointing as they advertise a vast range of snacks but in reality only pizza was available but only a minor issue.
All in all a fantastic stay the staff are hard working and the setting is perfect.
A few areas to watch although nothing to do with the hotel. The trips are expensive around £100 per person on average. The dolphins are a fantastic day out although they want $200 for photos and a dvd. Also there's a tourist tax when leaving the airport of around £40 per person and it has to be paid in cash so put some aside at the start of your holiday.

Visited here for two weeks in June with my partner, stayed in the Akumal, weather was beautiful, very hot which required a lot of time at the pool bar! (Jorge always helped with the drinks here!) Was a lovely holiday for chilling out and relaxing, we would defiantly return.

Hotel - Grounds were lovely, always being maintained and kept very clean and tidy. Staff were all very friendly. Stayed by the Akumal Pool most of the holiday and then moved onto the beach for a breeze. (Beach was manmade so a slight shame)
Carts taking you between hotels were a good touch, although we liked to walk some evenings which was nice too.

Rooms - We were upgraded to the Golden Rooms without asking (so very pleased) Rooms were kept clean, air con was great! Maids made some great pieces on the beds with the towels and were very creative.

Food - Food was good, I'm a fussy eater but always found something. Akumal restaurant was very hot at all times of the day, which made eating slightly uncomfortable when dressed for dinner!
For couples I would recommend the restaurant at the Tulum. We only went here on the last night and far preferred it to the others! More choice of food, much larger seating area (and feels more like a restaurant rather than a buffet). We didn't like the Coba buffet much as we feel it was geared more for kids (not what we were after)
We visited several of the Ala carts, The Brazillian Steakhouse, being my partners favourite. (Works on a red and green card system, green for them to bring more food around, red when you are full) as he said the steak was cooked superbly, one of the best he has had and you never had to wait long for them to bring more back round, they also have other meats which were equally as nice.
My favourite was the Mexican, The food in there was lovely, full of flavour and the services was great too. Defiantly recommend.

Trips- We went to Coco Bongo - Which was amazing would defiantly recommend, atmosphere, music and the show was brilliant! - We went for the VIP evening which included all drinks with waiter service. Didn't even have to get up, was very worth it!!
We took the bus into the local town Playa Del Carmen , did most of our present shopping here and really enjoyed the wandering around the shops and bars - was very lovely. Getting the bus there was easy and very cheap, but decided to get a taxi back as we were tired.
We also went on a day trip to Xscaret - have to say a little disappointed. We were very excited to swim in the caves and when given snorkels thought that there may be something to look at. - Nothing, not a single fish/animal! They cram so many people into the caves you can't swim and end up getting kicked by flippers from all angles.
We also thought a walk around the orchid and flower garden might be better than it turned out! I saw 3 orchids on a 30 minute walk and no other flowers at all, just bushes and greenery. (maybe it was the wrong time of year, but again very disappointed).
We ate in the Mexican alacarte with a mariachi band playing which was the highlight of the day.
Very big park, with lots of walking and not a lot to see. We didn't want to pay to swim with any of the animals and felt other than that there wasn't a lot to do!

Slight Negatives -
Evening Entertainment - Nothing much going on after 10:30pm, lights are turned off and bars closed which was a bit disappointing. Even bars at the Hacienda closed at 11pm. (except the nightclub - where you weren't able to just sit and have a drink)
I wasn't too keen on the iguanas roaming around everywhere - especially when trying to sunbathe made me feel on edge, although they were harmless!

Great holiday! Would defiantly return to Mexico and to this hotel! Just what we needed.

My wife and I we have stayed in the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal riviera maya Mexico for 2 weeks between July and August 14 and we have really enjoyed our holiday... Room was spacious and spotless , staff helpful and very polite,we had a problem with some noisy next door first 2 nights but reception staff sorted the issue quickly and been moved day after in a different building which was even better! As you expect in all inclusive5 stars Hotel ,the choice of food and drink was enormous and we had beautiful tasty food in the buffet and in the snack bar just near the sea and also 4 different choices of restaurant each week including Brazilian Mexican Italian French Mediterranean Japanese etc... And all superb food and service... Beach with beautiful white sand and clear sea water main pools big but bit overcrowded and you have wake up very early if you want to seat on sun bed so we opted more for the sea! Is true because the umidity and the dry heat, management could improve the air conditioning of the main Restaurants and put some extra staff in the busiest bars of the hotel and leave bars open longer than 23.30 at night! Over all great experience highly reccomandable and been looked after as well from our Thomson-First choice rep. I advice to visit Xel-Ha natonal aquatic park stunning swimming with dolphins unique experience and maya ruins in Tulum and the little bay down the archeological site breath taking view!
