I can't say enough how wonderful a resort this is!
We stayed in villa 83, room 119 for a week. It was clean, spacious, and comfortable! We had a king size bed, where my wife, myself and young daughter slept and a sofa bed where my older son slept. They would have included another bed but we declined as we were fine with the setup. It was a great location. It was quite quiet and it had a partial view of the ocean and the infinity pool from our balcony. It had a fully stocked mini fridge, a two person jacuzzi, a double sink, a flat screen tv, a lot of space for clothing and they even provided slippers and robes for all of us.
All the pools were kept clean and the temperature was always warm and comfortable. We spent most of our time in the activity pool. All the pools had bars beside them except the main pool near the lobby had the swim up bar. Carlos, the bartender, at the activity pool bar was fantastic and Ana Marie, the waitress, made sure all the guests were never thirsty.
The staff was just incredible. Our villa had a host/butler who helped with any needs of the client. Darwin and Freddie were incredible with providing assistance to all the guests there and maintaining a smile. We were celebrating my wife's birthday there and Darwin spent some time making a special birthday theme in our room! We really appreciate him for doing that! The crew at the activity pool, Jorge, Ricky Martin (don't know his real name), Roberto, Leo, Tony, and Salid made sure everyone there had lots of fun and kept us busy! We already miss those guys. We won a lot of tequila so we have something to remember them by! Our waiters Ana and Ivan at the main buffet in Akumal were really friendly and just a joy. Each morning we were always greeted by them and they just added to the perfection of the trip! We had breakfast twice at Los Corales, the outdoor restaurant by the infinity pool, one of the most picturesque places to eat there. Carla the hostess was very nice and made breakfast by the ocean even better! This is by far Bahia Principe's most incredible feature - their wonderful staff. There was very little to complain about, but they made any problems even smaller. We'll be coming back just to see them again!
The food was great at the main buffet in Akumal. There was always a lot of selection and it was always fresh and fully stocked. The counters and floor were quite clean despite all the people coming through. Our favourite specialty restaurants were Tequila (Mexican), Don Pablo (fine dining), and Arlequin (fine dining). I would suggest reserving them as soon as you check in. I went directly to the guest services area where Antonio greeted us and expertly helped me. We found out he had the same birthday as my wife and he was able to make it an even more special event at Arlequin's where they made her a special cake. We'll never forget that dinner.
For anyone concerned about the travel from the airport to the resort I would suggest a private transfer. We took Canada Transfers and they provided travel there and back. We also took a Colectivo, which I consider their public transport, to go to the nearby city of Playa Del Carmen. It was only 35 pesos one way per person. We felt very safe and they picked us up at the gate of the resort and dropped us off two blocks away from the famous 5th Ave in Playa Del Carmen.
For souvenirs from the resort, Bahia has shops at each of their lobbies, but they also have the Hacienda which has nightly live entertainment and small shops where you can try to make a deal. We paid them full price as many people there need this as an income.
As for nightly entertainment, there was plenty like the Circus show, the Michael Jackson tribute and the Magic show. Unfortunately, we were so tired everyday from our activities we never got to see them! We'll try on our next visit.
My family and I enjoyed ourselves immensely! We were very sad to go and made sure we said "Hasta luego!" to everyone we met there. I've already started looking up deals there for our next trip. I would highly suggest this resort to anyone interested in truly experiencing a "break".
