“Honeymoon Nov 2013”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

We went on our honeymoon here for 12 nights in November 2013.

I want to get the bad stuff out of the way first and end on the good stuff.

If I were to be really picky I would say the décor could have been better, get rid of the dark wood and terracotta everywhere but that's personal taste. Everywhere was clean and well maintained, that was the main thing.

I did notice there was only cold water in a lot of the public toilets around resort which needs addressing. You cannot wash your hands and kill germs in cold water. Especially as most of these toilets were at or near the buffet eating places. Again the toilets were always clean and well stocked though, just needs hot water.

Internet connection and speed could be improved.

Location wise, the beach is lovely and its well placed to get to Playacar which is a more touristy resort not too far away. However, don't expect to walk out of the hotel into a tourist area. Everything is very much catered for in the hotel. Not a bad point as such, just something to be aware of. If you want to walk straight out of your hotel into a mcdonalds or local shops then go to PLAYACAR. If you want to spend a lot of time around your resort but maybe spend a couple of days out and about go to grand palladium.

So as you can see, not much to worry about at all.

And onto the good stuff,

A large resort style hotel that consists of 4 separate lobbies, several pools, several different restaurants from beach bars to buffets to restaurant's, 2 theatres and many numerous bars.

The rooms are all dotted all over the resort in small apartment blocks or villas.

We enjoyed our time here, its not too pompous to feel on edge but at the same time there was no riff raff/the usual family from hell to spoil the atmosphere. There was only a handful of English when we went but a lot of Canadians, who were loud and liked a drink but the resort was big enough to escape them if you wanted to.

We were generally impressed with the food, there was always plenty to choose from and it was usually fresh and hot. We did try the American grill house twice and the Brazilian restaurant once. These are 2 separate restaurants next door to each other but share the same kitchen. The food on the first 2 times tasted nice but we did get ill both times. The third time we went to the American grill house and ordered the pork ribs. We got twice the amount than we did the first time with lashings of sauce and as soon as I cut into them I could smell they were off. I did taste test 1 mouthful and they were definitely off. However, we were fine eating at the buffets and beach bars, which I must reiterate did really nice food, often giving out hand gel etc when you entered.

The resort was really clean and tidy all around, staff were the friendliest and most helpful of anywhere we had ever been.

Even though we were on our honeymoon we only got given a standard room but it was large and clean and we were more than happy with it. Our cleaner in villa 1 was superb, clean towels daily, new toiletries, freshly stocked mini bar daily.

The pools were all superb, plenty enough beds to cater for everybody. I didn't see much reserving of sunbeds etc. We particularly liked the white sands pool or the adult pools, although many a day was spent down on the lovely beach which was as you'd expect it to be. We were also lucky enough to see the brand new kids pool get opened while we were there which is the best kids pool I've ever seen. Top marks to the hotel company for spending money on this addition.

We did have a couple of rainy days which gave us chance to escape to the spa which was fantastic. I have paid a lot of money to go into much worse spas on previous holidays. This one was lovely and clean, with lots of different saunas, Jacuzzis, steam rooms etc all for free. Really nice addition to the resort, and you must try it while your there.

Onto the night time and the entertainments team are brilliant, the pirates of the Caribbean show being our favourite, so good we watched it twice. The rock night was also very good, even if the music is not to everyone's taste you can still appreciate how good the band and singers were, supported by the awesome people of palladium.

So, thanks to all at grand palladium for our honeymoon, we really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 1 which was close to reception, restaurants and pools.

CHECK-IN and ROOM
Planned a trip with a group of 15 people and called a few days in advance (spoke Reservations) to request that we all be in the same building as we knew that the resort was very big. Upon arrival our first group of 8 was given an unfriendly check-in by a different female employee (Matilde? Maritilde?) athough 2 of the couples have already stayed at other Palladium Resorts. 3 couples were given building 5 and one couple in building 6. Note, each of the buildings have 2 entrances so in the end we were all scattered and the last 2 couples with children arriving next day were in building 8...the gist of it, the staff is not accomodating and lack the simple customer service requests especially when the request is made well in advance. The rooms in Colonial were standard, average and dark. The bed is very hard and uncomfortable. The pillows are so big and hard that it is impossible to sleep on them, that we had to make our own pillows from a blanket and our own clothing. The TV is horrible that the only thing you get is static on every channel. None of our belongings went missing and valuable items were placed in the safe. Otherwise, the room is fine as you spend more time at the pool and beach.
POOL &BEACH
Plenty of pools to choose from, be prepared to walk as they are all scattered throughout the resort. The beach was dirty, rock filled and most of us cut up our feet when entering the water in the first 3 days as it rained for one entire day and on/off the other 2 days. On the sunny days it was clean and almost rock free but the water was a little murky so it was hard to see fish when snorkeling closer to shore.
FOOD
Buffet food in Colonial was descent. Always a lot of choices for breakfeast, lunch and dinner. A la carte restauants require men to have long pants and a long wait to be seated. Reservations are not required but be prepared to wait 1-2 hours on the night of. Our group ate the Steak, Japanese, Mediterranean and Mexican. All were good EXCEPT Mexican. Save your appetite and go elsewhere because you will find unexpected surprises in your food. 3 people ordered the Chicken Enchilladas and two of us found bones and one found a cartilage the size of a quarter. When the waiter, asked why have we not eaten our food we showed him what was rolled up in the enchilladas, he made a sarcastic comment by mentioning the country that we were from in a rude tone and snatched the 3 plates away. Not sure what he wanted to accomplish by saying that but we left immediately and it was clear why we only waited 20 minutes to be seated and saw many tables empty when the Steak restaurant across was filled to capacity. In conclusion, do not go there unless you enjoy to eat your chicken with bones/cartilage in it and prefer to spend your vacation on the toilet rather than the beach.
BARS & ENTERTAINMENT
Plenty of bars throughout, beach and pool bars. Bring lots of loose change and tip because it will reflect in the service and quality of your drink. Best bar by far was at the Colonial Beach at night with bartender Antonio "Banderas". Super attentive, funny and simply a gem. He worked the bar, carried the food and cleaned up all with a smile on his face and engaged in conversation with everyone. Definitely worth stopping by.
Lots of nightly entertainment whether in Colonial or White Sands, there was a different show every night from 9-11pm. You can use all the amenities/entertainment/food from the other resorts.
ACTIVITES
Jet skiing, water sports, Spa, Segway tours etc... Always something to do, so bring money as everything will cost you.
INTERNET/WI-FI
Free wifi in the lobby, HOWEVER, the signal is extremely weak and if you go even half way into the lobby itself you will not have signal. Too many people are using it and it is designed to be unreliable so you are forced to pay for your own wifi ($11 per day per device) if needed. One day wifi was purchased by a friend and during check-out paid for in cash with the employee also photocopying her passport...not sure why or why that protocol was taken, as none of us had to show our passports or even have them photocopied by the staff at any point during check-in.
Same unfriendly woman that checked us in also checked us out.
CHECK-OUT
Is at 12pm, however 2 rooms were given extended check out until 2pm ($10 extra per each hour). One extension was free because one room did not have items replenished during room service, as they were used up even after if was mentioned previously to make sure they would be replenished, etc., bottled water. The other extension was only $10 because the phone was not working for one day.
Overall, it is a nice resort with many things to do. Many pools and beaches that have enough room for everybody. It is a VERY big resort so you will walk a lot to get to everthing but also you will not feel cramped and have everyone on top of you.

THEFT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM HERE. The management does not seem to want to address this problem as it has been going on for years. They could easily place a guard for each two buildings this would help immensely. Cash (even the tips left for maids), jewellery and clothing are popular items.

I have friends who have visited many properties on the Mayan Riviera and they have never experienced this problem.

Every time I have visited this location there has been theft.

TV's are old with bad reception, limited english.

Property basically caters to Spanish speaking travellers, limited english from entertainment, some contests etc. mostly in spanish.

Restos and food good. Many outdoor dining options.

Good snorkelling in front of hotel, no need to take a tour.

Collectivos (van transport system used by locals) are safe to get around to Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum. Cheaper than Taxis. Always take taxi from hotel!

Adult pools nice and both have bar service and NO KIDS!

Kids pool recently opened a slide section which is great!

Room Tip: DO NOT STAY ON THE FIRST FLOOR Colonial caters to families, busy lively lobby. Rivieria noisier...

This was my third time staying at the palladium colonial and was still very happy. we were booked in the katanah side 1st but like the location of the colonial side better so we switched with no problem. Love the staff always so helpful and everything done with a smile. It rained for 4 days but the hotel deeps you entertained with lobby music in the lobby or trivia games in the lobby but also the rooms are very comfortable and you can relax and watch american tv. the lobby also has free internet. The restraunts are very good particularly like portafino and the japanese but the buffet is also very good and often went there too. not to mention self serve ice cream at several places. Love this hotel going back to take my children and grandchildren in january. They also just opened a children's pool that is fabulous and the nightly entertainment is fun too. looking forward to going back in january and showing this lovely hotel to my adult children.

Room Tip: rooms 30 31 32 on the colonial side are great but don't allow children

Not really what I was expecting given the price. The food and the swimming pools were great. We had problems with the air conditioning which took 48 hours to sort out. It also took 5 phone calls and 3 visits to reception. Friends at the resort also had a few problems with the rooms. A couple of times the water was not hot enough. WiFi was free in the lobby but over 10 dollars a day in the room and not particularly fast. Some of the walkways had need maintenance which does not appear to be missing.

In summary I think this is a bit old and tired and needs a refresh.

Had high expectations from recommendation from friends and online reviews.
Pros: 1. beach that rivals the best in Hawaii, Phuket Thailand, and the Philippines. The water was warm, clear, shallow, great for swimming and snorkeling right in the resort.
2. Spa was free to use the pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, fitness center. Adults only.
3. The convenience and stress free feeling of an all inclusive resort.
4.Clean.
5. Majority of the staff was friendly.
Cons: 1. although the food and drinks were plentiful, the quality was mediocre.
2. Check in staff did not make us feel welcome.
3. The lobby and the bedroom were dark. I asked the bell man when we arrived at 2 pm, if the power was out.
4. The bellmen ignored our numerous requests one day for a shuttle to our room from the lobby. We finally gave up and walked in the rain.
5. It was cheesy to have sidewalk vendors set up tables
at night in the hallways.
We'll probably try another all inclusive resort next time.

Stayed at the Colonial Nov 8-17/13 (10 of us in total) - Booked Jr Suites and were all upgraded to Mayan suites. This was our second trip to this resort - no complaints at all with any of the services.
Unfortunately for our 10-day visit we had downpours, high winds and thunderstorms intermittently for 5 of the days at least - very very unusual - spent 2 afternoons in the lobby reading or trying the internet .. and cocktails of course! . . or other times running for cover from the beach to keep dry. The staff worked very hard around the clock mopping floors, cleaning debris, etc while still tending to our needs.
Special thanks goes to the transport co-ordinators & staff driving the covered trollies, carts, any available vehicles taking us to our villas or picking us up for dinner, at the same time handling luggage for the arrivals and departures - not to mention transporting the poor wedding parties in their finest -
The storm(s) in no way reflect on the resort - they did a fine job! Just a disappointment when looking forward to 10 days in the sun! Suggestion - throw in rain cover or plastic bags if heading that way - seems there is a crazy weather pattern in general not only in the Mayan.

Room Tip: The best location is the Mayan Unit 30 - closest to beach and large pool and direct path to lobby.
