“Amazing place....”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

Having stayed in other hotels in Mexico I was wanting to try somewhere different and away from the main resorts of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen...well I definitely made the right choice. This hotel is amazing...from the stunning scenery and the activities available to the amazing food choice.
We flew on the Dreamliner and have to admit this was an added bonus to the holiday, a great flight with plenty of legroom and great entertainment. After arriving at Cancun airport we had to endure the nightmare process of clearing immigration and Customs to then arrive after a 90 mins journey to a beautiful hotel. Not the only negative of the hotel is the check in process, it is an extremely slow and boring process however we were supplied with a welcome cocktail and the rest of the holiday made up for this.
I could break the rest of the trip down into segments however this review would then go on for pages when in fact all there is to say is ignore the negative reviews, this hotel is amazing, the staff are friendly, hardworking and always on hand to assist, the grounds are beautiful and clean and the pools are the best ive ever experienced. The restaurants are amazing (especially the steak restaurant and the Brazilian) and the choice in the buffets is extensive. Also I know some people have commented that the drinks are watered down, however I can assure you the Smirnoff and Diet coke that I was drinking definatley wasn't! more like they were extremely generous with the vodka.
I would highly recommend the rock pool, this was amazing and the day beds are fantastic.
I would also recommend a visit to Xel-Ha and swim with the dolphins, this was a fantastic day and one I will never ever forget.
All in all this was one of the best holidays I have ever had and the hotel is the nicest I have stayed in. I am already looking at returning next year. If you are thinking of booking this hotel, then do it, you will not be disappointed.

Very late review. Visited the GP colonial the past 2 years for our wedding anniversary, cant wait for our 3rd visit this May. Special thanks to Valentine and Santiago at the Colonial bar for making us feel so welcome. Great food and drink and very good value for money. Counting down the weeks till we return.

Once again this resort exceeds my expectations. Beautiful resort with lots of beachfront. Plenty for all to do. Wonderful staff all around. Go visit the Punta Emilia bar on the beach and the bartenders will take care of you. Tell Bernardo, Mr Johnson sent you.

Problems with designated, paid for room on check in that were corrected a couple hours later. Sheets on bed were too small and were always becoming twisted & loose (uncomfortable) but otherwise room was fine. A la carte restaurants were very good and enjoyed about 5 different ones, worth the effort to go. Buffet had good selections and some really good food. Adult pool was superb, especially Carlos bartender. Beach was fine though we had yellow flag everyday which affected snorkelling. Colonial resort laid out as a circle so a fair bit of walking from rooms to lobby, buffet, restaurants, beach, pool and over to other resort areas. Colonial resort was full 4 star and very similar to most other 4 stars in all ways. AVOID SUNWING for the flights as LUGGAGE ISSUES both directions, no water in washroom, no entertainment one direction, poor service and LEGROOM NON-EXISTENT as they even removed the magazine pouch so legs could fit into TIGHT seating

Room Tip: No need for Junior Suite as only had couch & 2 chairs versus standard room.

My wife and I checked in for 3 nights last week before renting a condo in Playa del Carmen to spend our last 3 nights off resort. There are a number of pros and a number of cons. I know my brother and his wife enjoyed it more than we did and so I'm sure that some people will love it more than others. For us... We are going to stay off resort on future visits.

Pros:
1. Very friendly and generally responsive staff.
2. Large resort (5 separate resorts) with lots of activities and events.
3. Loved the archery activity (no training... just fun to shoot arrows at the target)
4. Buffet has lots of options. Smoke salmon, fried chicken, fruits were some of my frequent stops.
5. Drink service was fast and not watered down.
6. Multiple pool and beach areas.

Cons:
1. The rooms were noisy. The courtyards are all stone and so the closing of doors would echo and wake us up at night and in the morning.
2. Although the Japanese restaurant was great, the a-la-cart restaurants were pretty disappointing. Ribs & More was bad. They covered low quality meat with strong sauces. The Brazilian BBQ had good food but they waited 15 minutes between each skewer and so it took over 2 hours just to get a sample of the promised meats. My brother said the Mediterranean restaurant was horrible (they overcooked all the seafood) but the Chinese restaurant was good.
3. The entertainment was disappointing. The staff was trying really hard but it was low quality stuff and usually relied on audience participation and so if the audience wasn't into it, the show was a flop.
4. They make you line up at 8:00am each day to get reservations for the a-la-carte restaurants and if you aren't there early you'll likely miss out. Seems like there should be a better way to do this.

There were a lot of kids at this resort but surprisingly it didn't seem to bother us at all and so not putting this in the con column. If you have a family and want a place where you can take the kids this could be a pro on your list.

They do have a dress code for dinner at the a-la-carte restaurants but it can be hard to find any information on it. From what we saw you should be fine if the guys are wearing pants and shirts with sleeves. Anything seems to go for women except wearing your bathing suit in the restaurants.

Dear Michael B,

Thank you for taking the time to share the highlights of your vacation details with us. We are delighted you enjoyed our friendly service staff, buffets, varied pool and beach areas. Only our Japanese restaurant for show cooking tables (Teppanyaki) and the Punta Emilia require restaurant reservation, all others are on a first come first serve basis.
We are appreciative of your comments as this will help us to continuously improve our services at the resort to ensure that all our guests will have a fantastic stay.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything that we could do to assist you in the future.

This was our second time at this Resort having spent a week there two years ago. The Resort is better than before, with many upgrades and improvements, the resort is absolutely huge and the level of customer service is out of this world. Despite the hotels operating at near capacity, the staff always went above and beyond in making sure you have a special holiday. The Resident manager Banesa Burque Antelo was amazing in helping with our room requests as was the rest of the guest relations staff. Amazing clean rooms, towel art, fully stocked free minibar in room, powder white sand, amazing blue Carribean sea, restaurants-superb with a choice of cuisine so vast you could eat all day and not eat the same dish twice. A very special place that will stay with us forever.

We hope we can return.
