Just returned today 7/7/2012 from a great 10 day stay at the Grand Palladium. We were there the first year it opened (then called The Fiesta) and wow has the place grown. However, you still get great service, facilities, and wonderful hosts.

The grounds are lush and very carefully maintained. The fauna is native and gives a great backdrop to any picture. The buildings are kept very clean but some paint here and there could help keep things fresh. This is especially true around the pool areas.

The food is plentiful with a great variety. If you walk away hungry it is your own fault. While not being world class fare - it is certainly satisfying. The kitchen facilities to feed so many people must be managed well because there is a constant flow of fresh food with supervisors always checking the temperatures of food for either hot or cold.

The beach is very nice with good shade and plenty of lounge chairs. The only shortcomings I see are: no beach drink service (you go yourself) the sand is not racked and filtered so debris can be seen in the sand, and either hurricaines, pollution, or both have decimated the coral so snorkeling is disappointing. However, we did see fish, a nice sized octopus, manta rays and sting rays and 2 large french angel fish.

The resort is working hard at turtle preservation and we were able to participate in releasing newly hatched babies one evening. You are only a few miles from Ackumal and its a short taxi drive to Ackumal beach where it is free to swim with the giant turtles. I would suggest a morning visit before too many other tourists show up and it gets crowed having 20 people surround a turtle.

The staff are very warm and greet you with a smile and Hola. Even though this is an all-inclusive please tip the workers when possible. They work hard and don't receive alot so even a dolar or two reward them for their labors. Why not pick out someone doing an insignificant task and see their face light up in appreciation.

After reading some negative reviews i thought i would write my own review to enlighten how wonderful this hotel really is.

Stayed at this hotel in august 2011 with my partner and her family and was amazed by the sheer size of this hotel it is literally built around a jungle, within the grounds there is a crocodile pit with about 6-8 crocs in (caged in of course) whilst walking around the hotel grounds you will be met by small animals and lizards it really makes you feel a million miles away from home!

The hotel Kantenah is next door to 3 other hotels and you can freely use the facilties of the other hotels, prepare to take trousers to dine in there numerous amount of fantastic restaurants ranging from american ranch theme to a seafood restaurant on the beach but be prepared to book these restaurants as they do get rather busy! The food at this hotel is BRILLIANT!

They have evening shows, early ones around 7 are more child like with there kids team but the later shows are exceptionally good, i would pay to see those shows, the best evening entertainment ive ever had from a holiday venue!

There are many sports facilties within the grounds, great gym, great astro turf and tennis courts you name it, its there.

The beach is that perfect white sand and beautiful blue crystal clear water, with jet ski hire and numerous water sports facilities (jet skis are not free)

Rooms/restaurants/toilets/grounds/beach everything is kept super clean

Only thing i would say thats possibly negative is the weather, everyone expects the carribean to be amazing weather all year round or definitely throughout the summer months, i went in August and in the 2 weeks i was there we did have a few days where there was storms, (heavy rain/wind, thunder/ lightning) but it wouldnt last long and within hours it would clear up so do expect it.

Could talk about how amazing this place is all day- but honestly its WELL WORTH A STAY

My husband, myself, our thirteen year old daughter and my cousin and his wife traveled here on June 23-30, 2012. Overall, a good time was had by all. It is a beautiful resort.
The grounds and the resort itself are lovely. I did not mind walking or taking the tram. We loved the pools! The service could have been better at the swimup bar. The beach was also great. The few rocks when you first got in did not bother me. The other reviewers are correct in saying that the rooms are clean, but dated. Who stays in their rooms much anyway? The shows were tons of fun!
The spa is amazing and not to be missed. They have so many free things to do. Just go!
We went on some excursions through the Apple representative. We did Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen shopping by bus, and Xel-ha/Tulum. They were all fun. Not too much time to actually shop at Playa, however. Oh, sooo hot in Tulum, but beautiful!
The food was disappointing! You will stay skinny on this this quality food. It was mostly bland and tasteless, even at the sit down restaurants. The breakfast buffets were OK. In our opinion, the best restaurant was the Brazilian. On the plus side, no none in our party got sick on the food.
I would return if I got a good price. Grand Palladium really needs to work on their food, becasue it is such a nice resort.

I was conflicted prior to writing this review. My stay at Grand Palladium-Kantenah is a story of polar opposites. The great and the sub-standard.

Arrive and the bell staff will watch your luggage while you check in.
Start your check in with personal information gathering form (yes even the kids get to join in this fun). They did not even get a credit card to cover any additional charges.???
The bell staff will take you and your luggage to your unit(s) with out delay.

The unit(s) you are placed in will be modestly adequate, very dated , paint peeling, musty smelling and in need of some maintenance. The bed will be hard as a rock and the pillows will be way beyond these useful life. But if you want different pillows, they are available to rent for $3/ day each.
We had multiple problems w/ our two units and it took talking to 4 different people to solve the problem. Thank goodness the maid knew who to talk to. She solved our problems. Thank you Angeles.

Resort Grounds
The landscaping is awesome, the pools are clean and cool. We found the small pools much quieter and less crowded.
The resort is huge! Use the trains and shuttles. Everything is a walk and a half. I actually enjoyed the exercise, others in my party were overwhelmed. Lots of wildlife to see along the way.

Bars
The bars were OK, they will push the cheap booze shots and top shelf liquors are hard to get served. The bartenders will either bend over backward to serve you or down right ignore you. No telling which. The beer is cool not cold and you can choose from Del Sol or XX Dark. I'm a beer snob. It would have been better if there were more or different choices. Go to the Riviera / White Sands lobbies for better service and more fun at the bars and night life.

The food was either awesome or terrible.
The buffets were plentiful w/ choices. Mostly cafeteria style bland food and some very good specialty foods made to order. The service was also great or non-existent. There were times we could not get water or coffee before we were done eating. Other times the service was frequent and greeted w/ smiles. Nothing in between.
The Ala-carte choices were generally accessible. Only one out six attempts was met w/ a wait more than an hour. Usually 20 minutes. These produced food that were nothing to write home about. Some of the food was not very good at all. Service was very good though.

Beach
Awesome and lots of chairs and thatch roofed shade huts. Bring water shoes because the first 10 feet at the water line is rocky and then nice sand. You'll see rays and if you're lucky, turtles eating seaweed

Activities
Not well publicized but present. The water sports equipment is rationed: If you have 2 rooms, you can use the sailboats for 1 hour during you week stay (not per day – I asked) if you can prove that you know exactly how to use them after you sign a damage waiver (the replacement values are a bit steep also). Otherwise you have to take a $40 class. Towels are by exchange w/ a towel card. Lost or stolen towels are $20/ ea.

The final insult to injury was that we discovered that the kid's room had a serious privacy /safety issue after we were talking on the way to the airport. I called to advise them and they just blew me off. Check for holes in the ceilings, in my daughter's shower there was one with light shining through from the floor above. VERY CREEPY. Apparently at this resort, that's not a problem.

Room Tip: Choose a different resort

I returned home last Thursday from my 2 week holiday at this fantastic resort! There were four in our party, myself and my fiancé, and our friends (another couple). We travelled with Thomson from Manchester and had requested to be in rooms next to each other and to be close to the adult pool, both of these requests were met which we were overjoyed about! We were in standard rooms in the colonial section and were very impressed with how nicely decorated they were, we also had a HUGE queen sized bed! The mini bar was filled up daily so we were never short of water or other drinks and beers. The room was also cleaned daily and had a new towel animal on the bed each day which we thought was lovely. The hotel itself is so impressive, the walkways and lobby's, as well as the bars and restaurants all have such attention to detail. The surroundings are beautiful- so many wild exotic animals to see- they wont bother you unless you encourage them to come near to you. There were never any problems getting a sun lounger either at the pools or on the beach, and the towel cards were a great idea too as we could get a clean towel whenever we needed and didn't have to carry one around with us. The food at the lunch buffets was repetative and not great in our opinion, but the standards at the al a carte's was amazing. Our favourites were the Brazilian/ rodizo, Japanese/ tepanyaki, and the steak house. We spent most of our evenings in Churchills bar in the Kantennah section, where the barmen Alejandro and Alfredo were great! They had a laugh with us every night. Churchills is an over 18s smoking bar which is quite small so it's great to get talking to people. We made pretty much all of our friends in there. They also did branded drinks in this bar. As far as the entertainment goes, we only watched one show- the pirate dance show on a Friday at the Riviera/ white sands section, we really enjoyed it. There is a train that takes people from one section of the hotel to another, but being placed in colonial we were in a pretty central location and it didn't take long to walk to any part of the hotel. The spa is also very nice and relaxing, a lot of money have obviously been invested in making it look so grand. In all this was an amazing hotel and we wouldn't hesitate to go back or to stay at a sister grand palladium hotel!
