“1st Trip to Mexico - Principe Tulum”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

1st and best piece of advice; bring your own towels! Towels are distributed by towel cards, they often ran out of clean towels and to buy your own towels anywhere were $20-$25 per towel.

The Good

-the staff worked very hard and were seldom idle, usually dripping with sweat as they tried to keep up with the demand. Great staff!
-Alfredo in the Tequila Restaurant is the best! He gets it, he makes you feel welcome, always has a smile and is genuine. Guaranteed he makes the most in tip money, he earns it
-the beach was amazing, very few people were at the beach when we were there, most stayed at the very nice pools
-resort store and resort souvenir booths were very affordable (quite surprised) and the souvenir booths at the resort would haggle (if you like that)
-Public Relations team at the resort would book all of your a la carte, spa, golf and other activities, very nice to have
-our room attendant Teodora (building 40) was amazing and very nice, I really appreciated her quality of work

The Bad

-room safe was very small, smallest I have ever seen at a 5* resort, cannot even hold an iPad. Be advised, do not bring much you want to lock away as they charge $50 pesos ($5 US) per day for a small safe with a key (?) and the safe is too small. Have I said the safe is too small?
-great hard working staff, just not enough to meet my expectations of a 5*, if you try to self-serve, which I had no problem doing as I work in retail so I am very patient, they get rather insulted and defensive, I understand we went in the non-peak season, by choice, so they would have less staff. I would be afraid to go in January through March
-we are not prodigious drinkers of alcohol, but when asked for a strong drink, they would not make them, just pointed at signs saying talking about moderating your drinks
-Resort Maintenance; the mini-fridge stopped working on Wednesday morning as did the shower, we reported this, within minutes a supervisor was on-site reviewing. Then absolutely nothing happened presumably until after we checked out Sunday afternoon. We lost power in our room (breaker blew) and we reported it to the front desk, 3 hours later it was repaired

Bonus Section

-must see is Xel-Ha (Google this), amazing place and a crime if you do not go to experience, especially if you have kids!
-shopping on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen is highly overrated, very commerical with McDonalds, Victoria Secret, Hugo Boss etc... most places had fixed prices so you could not haggle and unless you wanted different restaurants to eat at or see more of the same souvenirs more money save yourself the time and use it elsewhere
-watch out for topless beaches, no indication, just stumble across it, guys you may find yourself in trouble if you do not have good sunglasses!
-travel mugs, bring your own to hold your drinks, this resort prides itself on being environmentally friendly and your drinks will last longer

Overall very good experience, I would recommend this resort. English was good and I will be learning Spanish for when I go back to Mexico or Cuba, it definitely helps!

Room Tip: Buildings close to ocean and restaurants were 37 - 41. A bit of a hike to the main lobby but worth i...

Just came back from a week at this resort and would definitely recommend it. Its a huge complex which may not be suitable for some, but id rather have the space without so many people around.
The good
The beach was clean and spacious.
The food at the buffet varies each night and was very good. We ate at two of the reservation only hotels (Tequila-good food , poor service) and La Tortuga (excellent Brazilian food)
Service-for the most part the workers were very friendly and helpful.
The Hacienda-good place to shop if you don't want to leave the hotel. Some complain that the prices are too high, but we left the resort and it was about the same. All about bargaining!
The bad:
We had a leak in our room and it took about 5 calls to get someone to come take a look.
While most of the waiters/waitresses were very friendly and helpful (special thank you to Luis and this other gentlemen who I forge this name but was managing this past Monday, who treated my grandmother like a Queen for her bday!) we did encounter some who lacked etiquette and overlooked us for the other patrons. It was most certainly a race issue and they need to realize we are Hispanic just like them but paid our money to be there as well! This was especially present at Tequila where our waiter offered tequila shots and photo opportunities to EVERY table around except us. Very disappointing.

overall the hotel was very nice and I would recommend it. Nice for families and couples.

We are back from a 10 days vacation and, again, we have been more than pleased with all the staff of the hotel. We've been in 6 different resorts in the Caribbeans and we have to admit that Bahia Principe Riviera Maya is the best. First stay in Tulum (we made Coba once and 4 times Akumal - our top destination), and we have to admit that they are still able to impress us with their close attention to details and great level of truely caring for our comfort. Of course we are what they call VIP, but there are so many VIPs that it could become easily just a sticker, but not for them. From the moment we stood at the reception desk, personalized service at its best we were offered: Felix Schlokat and Stephany Casillas are amazing. Special requests were attended to and more added when we entered our room. As always, food was excellent at the buffet, a la carte restaurants offered a great menu and tasty plates.
Weather in the last days of our stay was awful with heavy rain and winds. And of course, more people attended to the buffet which could have made it chaotic, but it was not the case. We were amazed to see the management of the hotel giving a hand at the buffet with helping dress up tables, making sure people are attended quickly, with the result that it went very smoothly. This makes a difference betwwen good and great management when special situations arise and two thumbs up for them.
For the beach side, very clean and chairs were available at any time of day. Service at the pool/beach bars was always with a smile and very prompt.
Our room was well attended to with the good care of Julio (thanks).

We have been staying in Bahia principe hotels for the last 7 years and this was our 10th stay. They have never deceived us and we have send friends and family that share the same appreciation of their service.

I can't say enough how awesome the staff at this resort were. We got married here in late October and the staff were so helpful for us, our family and friends. Taking care of all of our concerns without question, including all of the wedding prep. Beautiful location and amazing beach and pools. Definitely something for everybody. Highly recommend Don Pablo, and the Grand Tortuga. Thanks again!

We are not long back from two weeks at this resort and I so wish we were back. We travelled to Mexico for my cousin's wedding who got married overlooking Tulum beach. The day was magical and her photographs are beautiful. We never had a bad meal. The all inclusive buffet has sooooo much choice and every a la cart restaurant was delicious! Our favourite was the Brazilian restaurant but you must try and get the Japanese show table, it was fab! All inclusive has branded drinks and you can get something to eat 24 hours a day. The only problem is that in the tulum buffet restaurant it was off putting to eat as there were lots of birds knocking food of the tables. The staff work so hard and couldn't be any more helpful. The beaches were beautiful and the whole resort was soon clean. Negatives were that the all inclusive mini bar was warm then cold and wasn't well stocked ( for a couple you would only get one piece of chocolate or crisps). Also our party of 23 all booked together but were separated all over the three resorts which was a pain to organise to get together. I can't decide which resort I liked best, I preferred the tulum lobby, akumal buffet restaurant and beach and cobas pools so all in all a lovely resort.

Wow what can I say the grand bahia principe tulum is amazing! I stayed from the 16/10/13, for two weeks, the weather was so hot, we had about 5 good days of good sun, and a lot of rain and cloud, I have been told may is an excellent time to visit here so will be returning in may 2015 for definate. The whole place is kept immaculate, lots of iguanas and raccoons that are quite funny to watch when they steal the food, the dolphins are amazing i swam with them on my 40th birthday something to remember. the waiters in the buffet in the morning were brilliant Miguel and Antonio work so hard, and were always very friendly when they saw us, they always made sure we had everything we needed. The mikado show table is really good and the food was lush. The Italian is also nice. We stayed at villa 6 room 615 which was excellent with sea view, the pool was not far and the snack bar was excellent as well which our room looked out at. The beach is nice there are some rocks and some areas that weren't. The fish were huge when snorkelling, the entertainer at the pool is excellent and I loved the big paella they made for lunch! It is quite boring though when that heavy rain comes down as there is not much to do and it does flood bad, over all this place is amazing and definitely 5 star! I will be returning hopefully next time I won't have so much rain x
